View Full Version : GameFAQs "Best Game Ever" Contest = Trendy Votes

Now I know that only fanboys visit GameFAQs.

What the hell did SMRPG do to change the industry? NOTHING. Before SMRPG, there were already tons of better RPGs in the game market. Was it because this RPG happened to involve characters usually associated with side-scrolling action games? I think not. I believe this voting outcome is probably based off of it's 'trendyness' where people think it's cool to vote for RPG based games.

Street Fighter II literally put the fighting game genre on the map and it goes unnoticed? Especially now? Without the landmark fighting game that made SFII clones pop-up like wildfire, this industry would still be stuck at the point it was at in 1991-93.

This is just like the whole "Pong VS RCR" poll where Pong surprisingly overtook RCR.

Who would have known that Pong had the voting base to win? Sure, Pong changed the industry and all, but from what I've been hearing from most game players nowadays (ages 14 & up), either no one even remembers Pong, or they just think the game itself sucks because it's "no fun" or has "crappy graphics".

I guess I did underestimate the GameFAQs poll voters: Most of them seem to just on games that are trendy.

I based my entry on the 'trendy' games but so far, i'm just surprised at the outcome of some of these polls.

Do I personally think FFVII is the best game ever? Hell no. I've played thousandss of other games which I think are
equally great, so much so that I can't choose just one.

So how did I end up choosing FFVII for the "best game ever"? Simple. It's got a following of rabid fanboys who have the "if you don't like FFVII, you suck!" attitude and we all know that strength in numbers counts, especially when it comes to voting.

Hell.....

Let's just see exactly where this contest goes.

In this instance, I suppose the humorous saying "beware of stupid people in large numbers" applies. LOL

Eh, the GameFAQs polls have always been stupid and bogus. You should have seen last year's character battles... lame, boring video game stars like Tommy Freschetta (or whatever he's called) were beating out more legitimate characters like Samus and Pac-Man. It's because the lame brains who visit that site tend to vote for whatever game is popular at the moment regardless of whether or not the characters in them were truly cool.

No offense to Veasey, but GameFAQs is only good for that... FAQs. And sometimes reviews, too, but even THAT is pushing it sometimes.

Final Fantasy VII is still #13 in the top FAQ pages, and I'm sure it will be back in the top 10 before long.

I think that speaks for itself, as far as GameFAQs goes.

Final Fantasy 7 is almost guaranteed to win. GameFAQ's is completely overrun with Final Fantasy fanboys all with nicknames like XxXsePhIrOtHxXx to the point where any hope of an unbiased competition is lost. The sad thing is that when all this is over, I'm sure "FF7 Voted All-Time Best" will show up on a ton of VG news sites without any analyzing of WHY it was chosen.

I think the main reason that there are so many RPG fanboys hang out at GameFAQs is because you're more likely to need an FAQ when you're playing an RPG than most other games.

I thought pretty much everyone vists gamefaqs. And I'm sure most people who visit never sign up for the forums.

And it's a popularity contest. Nothing more.

I agree.

The poll isn't a contest to see what's the most groundbreaking or revolutionary game. It's just a fun little tourney that tries to gauge the popular opinion of GameFAQs.

No kidding. But it's more fun to rail against the imaginary "idiot GameFAQs user", apparently. It couldn't possibly be that the site's popularity with teenagers is skewing the results.

I picked FF7 to win it all too, and I don't even like the game. I wrote a negative review of it on GameFAQs, and you'd be amazed at how extremely angry the fanboys get over it. One kid sent me an email saying he wanted to stab me in the face, haha. :)

Anyway, I was a little surprised about today's results. In all honesty, I do like Super Mario RPG more than Street Fighter 2. However, being a great RPG is just about all SMRPG is. It's not revolutionary, innovative, and genre-starting like Street Fighter 2. For that, Street Fighter 2 gets more respect from me. I'd figure the typical teenage casual game player would be more familiar with Street Fighter 2 because:

1. They think SMRPG is too kiddy and dislike the fact that it has happy Mario characters rather than antisocial, dumbass assholes like Cloud who are "badass".
2. The graphics "suck" because they're on Super Nintendo and not 3D.
3. And/or it's too old for them to even know what the hell it is since half those kids are too young to have even played much of anything before PlayStation.

I guess I underestimated those frothing RPG fanboys and their ability to click "download" on everything that says "made by Square".

this one was kind of a tricky one for me to figure out. I'm kinda surprised my pong and smrpg picks are correct but I figured most people would vote smrpg simply cause people on the site tend to pick any rpg over a groundbreaking game like sf2. But whatever, I'm sure ffvii will end up winning it all in the end. Which is why it occupies my final pick.

FF7 Vs. Chrono Trigger with FF7 winning.

I would guess 85% of contest entries have that at the end, and are correct.

The only good I ever got out of GameFAQs is claiming a message board that I know will not be visited by anyone but me. Childish, yes. Satisfying, somewhat.

The contests and polls are all the same; dominated by cliques of fanboys. God help you should you write a critical review of a popular game. One person posted on the GTA: Vice City message board that he didn't see much improvement over GTA 3. He was flamed seven times within the course of 5 minutes.

Not to bash GameFAQs, but I'm glad it's different here. We got good reviews, excellent discussions, and quality posters.

Besides, how many times can you read, '...Is ThE sUxXOrs' without getting sick?

So am I just missing something, or is it not possible to find the entire bracket for all 64 games? Do you need a GameFAQs account? (Don't have one, don't want one)

And I agree with the sentiment that the final results are as relevant as their messageboard community.

I'm almost certain you need to have filled out a bracket before April 1.

I agree with a lot that has been said, but I'll also add -- I think that GameFAQ's IS a good site for reviews. Why? Well, not only do you have the peer based reviews (some of which are rock solid) you also have links to what the major gaming sites on the web gave it (IGN, GameSpot, etc.)

You can also use it to help you find online sites that are selling the game, and for what price.

You can also download saves. I dowload a LOT of saves for PS1 and PS2 games from there for my devices.

Since I've written several FAQ's and Reviews on the site, I know a lot of the message boards are overwritten by fanboys, but you CAN find some helpfull info. See the X-Files game on my sig below? It took about two weeks before a good FAQ of the game went up. In the meantime, guess where I went to get help when I was stuck, and with good results? ;)

Amen to that.

Any game poll that skips out on "Duelin' Firemen" isn't worth squat, anyway. And the Infocom version of "The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy."

I'm bumping this because the popularity contest is down to the final two games - Chrono Trigger and - you guessed it - Final Fantasy VII.

And FFVII is ahead.

To me, this is like "what was better - CT or FFVII?" I voted CT. Imo, the "Best. Game. Ever." was Super Metroid, but that's another story.

Anyways, share your thoughts.

I picked Mario 3 to make it to the finals and get beat by FF 7. Once mario got bumped, I knew that GF users are idiots.

That contest was a sham from the very beginning. CJayC should try making a contest next year of "best non-rpg video game ever", and watch what happens.

I'm betting GTA San Andreas would win.

I only go there for the FAQs myself. From what I hear you even bash or disagree with anyone on an anime or something FF related you're flamed for life. It's sad and pathetic and would rather be a part of a mesg board with adults giving real reasons why the ylike or dislike something.

Needless to say, Final Fantasy VII has won.

After two full monts of polls, it's official: Final Fantasy VII is the Best. Game. Ever. It's been scientifically proven, and therefore is a solid fact. Assuming, of course, you base your facts on popularity contests. :)

Well, at least they admitted it was a popularity contest. LOL

That contest was total crap. Not a single mega man game in it, and chrono trigger definitely should have won.

Gamefaqs is bound to be RPG-bias... I mean shit it's the one genre you actually need guide books for. And whenever you look at the top 10 used guides for almost any given system the majority of them are RPGs.
