View Full Version : PS2 games with some length to em

Maybe it's just that I've finally gotten around to putting some real time into games lately, but it seems like they all end too quickly. My binge started with the first 2 .hacks. Okay, for some reason they decided to make it four 20-hour games instead of one 80-hour game, I knew that before I started. Then Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. At least I received warning in the form of the percent complete that appeared throughout, but 10 hours! Well, it is a non-RPG, I hear those are short. Then FF X-2. I've never been one to get everything and do all of the more annoying sidequests (Evil Number Dungeon From Hell, I'm looking in your direction), so that went by quick too. Now I've picked up Xenosaga after a long long hiatus, and I got stuck, so I glanced at an FAQ, and ARGH! I'm in the last dungeon and I'm barely 40 hours in! This was supposed to be long!
Soon I'll be left with no PS2 games to play but Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII, which isn't bad, but the lack of a plot to follow doesn't combine well with someone who has the attention span of a small rodent, and Suikoden 3, which I can't stand due to the gargantuan step backwards it represents for the series. Why change such beautifully crisp graphics and battle systems as Suikoden I and II had, especially for the generic FF-knockoff look and the ludicrously unweildy "buddy system" battles? If anyone can figure out how to use the Fire Rune without frying your own party, I'd like to hear it.
Anyway. I'm looking for a good game with a main storyline that takes a good long time to get through, even without minigames and 100% completion and such, as I lack the patience for them. Doesn't even have to be an RPG.
It's hard, loving games and hating to finish them. :)

Have you played Final Fantasy Tactics, for either PS1 or GBA? The PS1 game, to this day, STILL has the 'longest game time logged' record -- 110 hours! :eek 2:
The GBA one took some time also to finish.
And Ring of Red for the PS2. Yeah. I've had that game for over two YEARS and I have YET to finish it! Mostly due to how freakin long the battles are! LOL
God, I wish I had your time to play games. I'm working on the ones listed below, but even THOSE I can only get to a few days a week.

Would you guys say that hockey is a bad game cause it only lasts 3 hours? See, something strange happens in games like that... People watch and play them over and over and over. Did you ever wonder if maybe there were games like that? I'm thinking that if you have issues with game length then you're either playing the wrong games or you need a new hobby. I am a gamer and I can name many many games I would never consider myself "done" with cause I like them so much. This is also why i love arcade games. I mean, you almost can't play a perfect game on a typical arcade machine. To max out your score and never die... And then the fact that they can put you in new situations every time. I also love internet play for this reason. But that doesn't mean there aren't RPGs I could play forever. Some people have found this joy in FFT experimentation. In my youth I found that joy in Dragon Warrior 3. Recently I would say that I could play Breath of Fire 5 and FFX over again many many times and never really have them wear off on me.
Well my point is that maybe you should change your gaming philosophy or find a new hobby or find different kinds of games... I mean if you're obsessing over length you probably aren't enjoying your games like you should.

I don't think any game get's much longer then Disgaea...
dmhawkmoon: While I agree that the length of a game doesn't really matter you have to keep in mind that Dahne plays mostly RPGs. Most RPGs you'll play once and never look back on. It's the nature of the genre. Sometimes you'll find a game that you absolutely fall in love with and play multiple times but for the most part when you beat one, you buy another.
Note: This doesn't apply to more action based RPGs like Zelda clones or Tactical RPGs where the gameplay is the main attraction over story.
That said I love really short RPGs too because sometimes I just don't have the time for a long one. But it's a little silly to accuse the girl of not being a true gamer for wanting a little more play time from her dollar.

Well its more of a money making market type of game to release 4 .hacks, at 20 hrs apiece, which is very beatable. You play one and beat it reasonably fast, and want to get the next one. Do you think that you'd have played through 80 hours of .hack straight if it was one game? Id have stopped by 40 if the game wasnt broken up like it was.
Looking at my massive PS2 list of games, here are a few that I suggest.
Hate me for saying this but GTA 3 and GTA:VC (wow this is like the third time that ive mentioned them today, thats kinda funny)
Both are openended enough to let you play a lot or a little. And after youve beaten the game you could got for 100% which alone is a challenge. In the past friends and I have spent hours just doing stuff in the game, cool crashes, only hurting crooks, stuff like that, its kept me coming back for more.
Ring Of Red: which has been mentioned.
Shadows Of Destiny: Not quite as long as it is, multi-tier endings. I think that there are 7 or 8 of em, and the story is pretty good to boot.
HarvestMoon: Save The Homeland: It can go on for quite a while, and its all about romance, thats got to be fun, if not, you can farm instead.
The Armored Core series AC2, AC: Another Age, AC3 and Silent Line AC: They all have customizableness to them, and are pretty fun. Constant Mech building and things and lots of missions would work if you like this kinda game.
Some that I have, but have yet to sit down and play, so I can throw the names out, but I honestly dont know about their lengths.
Forever Kingdom
Metropolismania
Culdcept
Romance VII, VIII, IX
Shadow Hearts

..Harvest Moon Save the Homeland is incredibly short. Unless you beat it nine times for all the endings.

Disgaea is one of the best games i've played in a long time, and it's VERY long. You can level your character to level 9999, there's planty of secret areas, and it's got exploding zombie penguins. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR!!!!!???!?!?!
Here's some other PS2 games that will keep you occupied for awhile
.hack Part 1-4
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Dark Cloud 1 and 2
Kingdom Hearts
Magic Pengel
Monster Rancher 3 and 4
R-Type Final
Suikoden 3
There ya go! They're all definitely worth your time.

I like long games because there's something great about having that kind of time to get to know the world and the story and the characters. I think I'd play through the whole .hack if it was one 80 hour chunk, but that's just cause I like it a lot. :)

If you want a long RPG but don't want to do any side quests and such, you kinda only have yourself to blame... no offense. While I'm not saying you should level up to the maximum level or collect every single item, you're missing out on A LOT if you just quickly play through the bare plot of the game. Take Chrono Trigger, for example. Imagine skipping all of the side quests at the end. Not only would you be missing out on lots of story, but you'd also miss lots of fun battles and dungeons. With one of my favorite RPGs, Star Ocean 2, I didn't even really realize just how much I loved the game until I did the AMAZING bonus dungeon at the end of the game.
Since I usually take my sweet ass time in RPGs, I don't really know what to recommend. Games that I take a long time on will probably be much shorter for you. I've spent over 200 hours on Star Ocean 3, which should come out in the US sooner or later, but playing just through the normal game... it'll probably take 50-70 hours. Is that long enough for you? o_O

I'll make my 400th post defending Disney.... I can handle that.
I thought that Kingdom Hearts was a very good blend of Square and Disney. They created a story that was interesting and I thought that the games levels were very well done. A couple of things could have been a little better, (The Gummi ships, and the AI for Donald/Goofy) but I thought that it was a good game.
I thought that Dark CLoud 1 was pretty short, and didnt offer all that much challenge to it. Mind you I didnt level my weapons up properely (joining them when I should have) I still have gotten far in the game, I just think that the Zeldaness of the dungeons, but with breakable weapons was a bit testy. I still highly enjoyed the game and am just before the final land, (I seem to be missing making someone happy cause I cant complete my robot 100%) but it wasnt all that long.
Daria: I didnt realise that HarvestMoon was so short. Thats kinda a bummer.
Straw-bul-berry me please.

Well the rest of the series is incredibly long but Save the Homeland is the odd duck. Takes about a day to finish. Still a great game though, and you're suppose to try and get all the endings.

Quick ??, how is Dark Cloud 2 in terms of length? I'm thinking about picking this up at my store, I'm hiding this copy in a pile of EA sport games so no customer can find it.

It's a very long game.... but in a tedious way. The majority of the game is spent going through bland, randomly generated, dungeon levels hacking away at enemies. The combat is very clumsy -- nowhere near the fluidity of say... 3D Zelda. The story and characters are also pretty generic, so there isn't much to keep you going there.
There's a lot to do in terms of extras, but I personally couldn't stand to bother with them when the main game was so flawed. I ended up selling it, and I very rarely sell any of my games.

I like about 90% of the games made by Square but this game is a pile of trash, boring, repetative, and baby-ish.
