Come on everybody. Go to www.gamefaqs.com and vote for EARTHBOUND in the poll. we as gamers cannot allow this to pass, doom beating earthbound...it's a crisis! pitch in and help!

I've just voted. For Doom :D
If you think that yet another solid-but-hardly-revolutionary SNES RPG is a more important landmark in the evolution of videogaming than Doom, then you're even crazier than the typical Gamefaqs user.

this is a crime!
One of the greatest rpg's ever created..(coming from someone who isnt an rpg fan) over yet another shooter! doom wasnt the revolution in any case, wolf3d was....
cmon people. i know we can do this. we can get enough votes up for earthbound! its only behind by four thousand.

Sorry...I voted for Doom also. Doom is a classic, it's brilliant! Still fun to play today.

Earthbound? nah, good game but no where near Best game ever. My money's actually on Super Mario World or Sonic 2

You see, there's the problem. Doom WAS the revolution. Noone cared that much about W3D. It wasn't that great a game. Doom, on the other hand, completely set the genre on fire, mostly because it was a good game. I love how the levels are mazes more than just shooting rampages, something that few FPS games today even do. And besides, technically W3D wasn't the first... wasn't there a game on the 2600, an adventure game, where you could shoot crossbow arrows in FP?

Besides, Earthbound blew chunks. I hated the graphical style and the music, and personally the story wasn't great, just a bit weird.

Doom = yet another shooter? ROFL ROFL

Let me take a wild guess here: You're too young to remember the impact Doom had upon release, right?
No-one who is able to remember the first time they saw it could possibly describe it as 'yet another shooter'. Yes, Wolfenstein was there first, but it was Doom that changed everything. Earthbound is, well, just 'yet another rpg'.

i dont think doom OR eartbound deserve the title of best game ever but earthbound sure is a hell of a lot better than doom, if it had been doom 2 i mightve picked doom 2 but not doom 1

if it was chrono trigger or FFIII against Doom, I'd go with those, but Earthbound? Good, interesting, original but I wouldn't put it in the 'groundbreaking' category.

Wolf3D did it first but Doom was the one that caught on and spread like wildfire. Doom did everything better and got people into the FPS genre which exploded like so much demon viscera. Doom should win this round, and this is from a FPS hater.

There's a reason they say 'Doom-clones' and not 'Wolf3D-clones!'

Catacombs-3D was the first texture mapped 3D action game, although it followed Hovertank, which had scaled sprites but flat shaded walls.
The catacombs engine looked similar to [Wolfenstein 3-D], but it was quite different internally, and had more error conditions.

Doom and the few 3D action games that came before it are kind of like Computer Space and Pong. Sure CS came first, but Pong was the one that made the biggest impact. Doom changed the focus of the entire gaming industry, not to mention what it did for the shareware market. I think it would be hard to overestimate its importance.

The man's got a point...

...anyways, I'm surprised Earthbound even made it this far. Like has already bee said, good game but no where near the top 20 for best. game. ever. Actually there's lots of games missing from the list. The Simpsons made it that far? Damn, as Arcade games go Simpsons wasn't the best, it was good and it was the best Simpsons game ever but that's not saying much.

What I wanna know is why would someone get worked up over a poll on a fanboy infested game site anyway? Good for gameFaqs tho. I'm sure their traffic is through the roof.

this whole contest is messed up anyway. No virtual boy games were represented!

It's a GameFAQs poll. They're about as meaningless as the points in a game of Who's Line Is It Anyway. Don't let it twist your undies in a knot.

Earthbound was a piece of JUNK. I'm not even that big of a doom fan, but I definitely picked it over earthbound.

Yeah, I'm sure no Sega Pico or Phillip's CD-i games were entered into the fray either, what's your point? :hmm:

Another vote for Doom! And you said Doom wasn't revolutionary? So why are thousands of PC users eagerly awaiting the release of Doom III? I don't hear of anybody waiting for the latest Earthbound game. LOL

Funny. I wouldn't put Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 3/6 into the ground breaking catagory either.

Good games. Popular games. But there's nothing either of them did that hadn't been done before in an RPG.

At least Earthbound felt unique.

While it's cool to have discussions about the games that are being voted on, I think it would be wise to keep the desperate pleas for votes elsewhere...

As for myself, I have Doom selected to win, and I voted for it as well. I may not like first-person shooters, but I gotta give respect to Doom. It's a well-designed, innovative game, and it affected the industry far more than Earthbound ever did (but you could say that the first Mother game was pretty unique and Mother 3, had it been completed, would have been quite revolutionary for the RPG genre).

Not that the Earthbound/Doom vote matters anyway, Gunstar Heroes will win hands down.

I voted for Doom.

Not because it was groundbreaking, not because it made a genre popular.

I voted for it simply because I had more fun with it then I did with Earthbound, and to me that's all that matters when it comes time to decide what the best game ever really is.

Earthbound IS the best game ever. Those who don't think so can *&%*% my (*^(^&_(.

Also, those that don't like EB obviously didn't play all the way through it. It's impossible not to love it after that.

For anyone who doesn't think Doom was a huge landmark in video game history, simply because Wolf3D came before it, consider two things:
Doom single handedly created the "mod" community. You actually could modify Wolf3D, but it wasn't until Doom where you could actually make the game look like something different. Remember Aliens TC? Simpsons Doom? Modding became an important part of FPS games (well, computer FPS games anyways), and is still around today.
Doom started Deathmatch. Deathmatch eventually spawned all the various network multiplayer modes in today's FPS games. Wolfenstein was fun, but throw a second player into the mix with some trash talking, and suddenly the game jumps by orders of magnitude.
So regardless of the fact that Doom wasn't the first FPS game (hell, neither was Wolf3D), it did a LOT more for the industry than Earthbound ever did.

Without Doom, there would be no Half-Life, no Unreal, no Quake, and so on.... Without Earthbound, there would be no... Earthbound...

Earthbound was always overrated anyways.

Earthbound was fun and good, but Doom was more profound and just incredible. Playing Doom again is like you're playing it for the first time again: crank up the headphones, turn off the lights and be scared poo-less.

On a side note, GameFAQs polls, besides being dumb and fanboy-based, are just funny as hell. SMRPG beating out SFII? Gunstar Heroes beat out by LoZ? (ok, that one MAYBE, but it's only probably because no one there PLAYED GH)

I'd vote for Doom if I actually cared about that poll. Even though I like RPGs, I never liked Earthbound (and yes, I tried playing it, and I realized that it just didn't do it for me).

And even though I'm not much of a FPS fan, I agree that Doom is one of those games that had a tremendous impact upon its release.
