View Full Version : What do you want to try?

When I was a kid I always wanted to try a Bally Astrocade. I only ever saw pictures of it in EG; I never saw it in a store and none of my friends had it (or heard of it, or cared).
I tried it for the first time two years ago, which is remarkable since I've been collecting for ten years. This machine always eluded me somehow.
Is there something out there that you just want to try? Not to buy for $200 on ebay, but just to try it out at a friend's house or a convention or something, to see what it's like.
Here's my short, off the top of my head list. Some of this is stuff that's so common it's unbelievable I've never tried it, and some of it is holy grail stuff.
-Propeller Arena
-SMS 3D glasses
-Atari 5200 (!!! that's right. I have never played a properly working Atari 5200, not even back in the day)
-N64 Superman
-Drummania
-Atari Cosmos
-Stellar Assault (Saturn import; although this might be crossing the line to something I WOULD pay a lot of money for)
-Ultravision
-Darius (the big one)
-Firefox
-Starfox 2
-Tempest 3000
-about 100 C64 games I never tried

What's that game that costs like $200 and has the huge mech panel with all kinds of levers and buttons for a controller? Steel Batallion or something? You need to go through the elaborate setup procedure and you have to save and eject your pilot if things go sour or it deletes your save file? That seems like it'd be an absolute hoot, but I can't really justify dropping that kind of scratch on one game. Plus I don't have an X-Box, so that kind of hinders it too.
I want to try the eyetoy too, though it must be awkward to actually see one making an ass of one's self.

I'm glad I got the oppurtunity to play a little bit of Propeller Arena...the game had so much potential. I really want to play (and own :D ) the Nintendo competition carts...they're probably the only rare games I would really enjoy playing.

Wow, this makes me realize that I often wanted to OWN things, not play them. That's interesting.
Right now I'd really like to get ahold of (and try out) a Space Hurricane unit, and I'd really like to play Gain Ground :)

Back in the mid nineties I got to try out my buddies Jaguar system and spent most of the time playing Alien vs. Predator, that was cool. It was also enough to know that I didn't want to buy one after a week or so with the loaner.
Lately there's been some 3DO discussion which make me want to give one a try. All I need is week and a half dozen titles to see if this is something I might want to buy. The same could be said for Neo Geo AES, PC Engine, Turbo Duo, or a PCFX. I don't think I'll go out of my way to obtain and collect for those systems anytime soon.
I've been playing and buying Saturn stuff so I'd really like to try Radiant Silvergun and Panzer Dragoon Saga.

-at least one of the Nintendo Game & Watch handhelds
-SNES Super Scope 6

As a kid I always wanted to sit down with a Vectrex. I got to play one for the 2 minutes that the toy department would let you, but that obviously wasn't enough.
I'm also *dying* to try the CDi Zelda games. Yes I know they're crap. But they're the only Zelda games I haven't beaten yet and it's *killing* me :)
(In my case, though, both of these *are* things I'll just buy anyway someday - although never on eBay at it's prices).

Steel Battalion / Line of Contact is the best video game evar. You are fools to not have tried it already. If you have bought $200 or more worth of video game equipment in the past 16 months, then you are doubly a fool, because you could have been playing Steel Battalion instead of whatever stupid crap you bought instead.
That is all. Rookies.

i had 3do for a week and it broke(damn bad shipping!) and actually i was happy that the piece of crap broke!!!
i'd like to try some turbo-cd games though, atari 7800, atari 5200, atari jaguar, to see if theyre worth buying. lynx as well.
oh and to those of you who stated you want to try virtual boy: Just get one.get mario's tennis, wario world, and vertical force; those three games make it worth it.

Atari 5200.
They weren't released here and I'd like to play one (even better own one) for myself.
Also, FM Marty Towns and TurboGrafx-16 spring to mind. Again - not released here.
I've never actually played a 3DO, but I've played heaps of PC ports of it's games so aside from never touching the controller, I've pretty much played it. :P
Again, I'd very much like a 3DO.
Vectrex - I've played it in emulation and have seen one in action, but I'd just like to play it for myself. I just LOVE the green vector graphics. :D
Other stuff I haven't played, and would want to own some day: Atari 7800, Wonderswan Color/Swan Crystal and a 64DD.

Me too! Panzer Saga's prices aren't bad right now but I have low cashflow. It's the kind of game that I think I could find in the wild but patience isn't one of my better qualities.
I'd also like to try an Atari 5200, just to see if it's like I remember it from when I was a kid.

I too have wanted to try a Vectrex, I seem to remember playing one at a friend's house for a few minutes...
I have the Neo and Duo setups most people seem to want to try, and let me say: GET THEM! They're my two most played systems, by far. If you can, get a modded Duo. If you're usually low on cash, scrape up for the MVS hardware on the Neo, if you got bucks, go AES. That's my two cents on that.
I've yet to play Phantasy Star in it's native SMS form. I want to rectify that...
I also have yet to play a Shining Force as well, but that will change soon as I research my next article. Man, I'm catching up on a lot of RPGs lately... woof.

I think I have most of the systems I want at the moment except for two:
Neo Geo and CD32!
The Neo for obvious reasons (and I've been in a 2-D binge lately), and the CD32 as I was/am a big Amiga Freak...
Cheers,

Jeez Kaine, you really do need to get out to a NJ Classic one of these times. You could knock off 4 out of 5 of these there (or all 5 if Portnoyd brings his Steel Battalion)
