got vice city today, been playin it for the last half hour or so, and so far its badass. now instead of making up a name for drugs, like spank, they call it cocaine. motorcycles are pretty cool, if you hit something hard enough, you go flying off the bike and lose some health.
and the targeting system is much better.
i cant wait to slice people with the katana.

Electronic Gaming Monthy has glowing reviews for this game.
10's
One thing that sounds really cool is the fact that they bought the rights to actual 80's songs to listen to in the cars. EGM states there's nothing funner than running people listening to " I just died in your arms tonight" !!
Haw Haw.
I'll wait till BB sells em used for $24.99 hell I still haven't finished GTA3.

Sounds cool, but I still have yet to finish GTA3 so I'm going to wait a little longer.. On a flip note I'll bet you will be able to get GTA3 for $15 pretty much everywhere this weekend.

I hope so, as I'm one of the 8 people in the US who STILL don't own GTA3. Chalk it up to "wanting to finish the damn games I have BEFORE starting this time-eater."

First off, they have done a great job in capturing the 80's feel -- the Rockstar logo is the old C64 loading screen.
Graphically, it's not jaw dropping, but there are nice touches like all the neon and heat vapors coming from your exhaust. The cutscence are much better though, there is more camera movement and the models are more animated (the voice acting is excellent also).
The radio stations are great -- nothing like killing people while Slayer is playing, and having your character talk adds a lot to the game as he puts out one-liners while doing his dirty work.
Vice City generally feels more alive. The peds react more to what's going on -- if you run someone over, people will come and look at the body and things like that. There are many more stores, Ammunation is there as well as tool shops, clothing stores, bars, etc. You can also go into malls -- in one, I found a car and tore through the place.
As you go further into the game, you can buy more things such as new outfits. So far I've had the Hawaiian shirt, a Gap-esque outfit, redneck overalls/baseball hat and the purple suit. Changing clothes gets the cops off your tail.
Oh, and you can also buy buildings to use as safehouses/save points. Overall money is much more important -- even getting stuff like health pickups will cost some money, and as you get much less cash for missions, you will have to be thrifty early on.
The mission structure is much the same as GTA3, you basically go from boss to boss getting tasks. You have a cell phone that people sometimes call you on and there are phone booth missions. The emergency vehicle missions are there as well as the taxi ones, but I haven't found any others yet.
Your character can now crouch and bail from cars, which is cool, and the aiming system is much improved. One thing I don't like so far though is that your weapon selection often changes after you come out of a cutscene.
As for cars, a lot of the cars from GTA3 are there but the handling has been changed -- the Esperanto is actually decent. I haven't tried the boats yet and I suspect it'll be some time befor eI get to the copters or planes, but the motorcycles are very fun. There is everything from mopeds to Harleys to street bikes -- many places like rooftops are only accessible by them and you can fire forward while riding one. However, you are vulnerable to gunfire while on bikes and hittting something will send you flying.
The weapons are great -- so far I have gotten a pistol, Uzi, submachine gun, AK47, hammer, screwdriver, chainsaw, shotgun, grenades and a sword. You have to use some strategy in picking weapons because you can only have one type of a weapon (ie, you cant have both a sword and screwdriver at the same time). Some of the weapons can damage/cut apart cars and using the chainsaw produces blood splatters on the screen.

Should I get GTA3 or Vice City then...?

Ok. Now I need to find some money to get a PS2 and the game.

Hmm.. 18p. I don't think that'll quite cut it.

If you have neither, get Vice today! As others have mentioned, you can expect the price on GTA3 to drop soon, so once it does, grab that one too! 8)

Heck I'll get Vice City then. I'm also a huge 80's music buff so this'll fit in nicely. :)

Wow, I may have to get this one after all. I am one of the 5 people who wasn't completely blown away by GTA3, but it sounds like they've fixed everything I thought could use improvement.
Of course, I'll be waiting until I can find it used (got GTA3 months ago at Goodwill for $17.)

I read a preview of Vice in Game Informer, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it in action. I like how Rockstar isn't making this a prequel or a sequel, but just another game. That makes it more unique, I think. There haven't been a whole lot of other gaming companies that I can think of that did that.

Probably the next logical city would be San Francisco (San Andreas from GTA1) or London (GTA London).
Butta, how far are you in the game percentage wise? I'm at 15% and I only have the ghetto building with no garage.
Stark

It will probably be London in the next game but Chicago would be better for me! Vice city rocks...:D

@neil koch, im not sure on the percentage, ill have to check when i get home from work, but i did skip on buying the cheap building and just saved up for the better one. it costs 14,000. if you need extra money go to the mall and go on a killing spree, you can make about 2000 in a half hour or so.
the 14,000 place is pretty damn nice, its actually a 3 or 4 car garage and 2 more 2 car garages, plus the chopper on the roof.

Check out this news report about the game, they're horrified as usual!
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/GoodMorningAmerica/GMA021031Grand_theft_auto.html
My favorite line: "When you kill a prostitute after having sex with her; that's not something we want boys doing" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Also, they say kill a cop, good, kill a civilian, even better. Anyone knows that getting the cop off your back is more important!

"I'm for freedom of speech but Grand Theft Auto is heinous," Washington Post columnist Mike Wilbon said on ESPN's live commentary show, Pardon The Interruption. "The people who put it together should be stoned in the street."
See, here's the REAL problem. Wilbon is bashing a FICTIONAL GAME and then he goes on to say that Rockstar employees should be stoned to death? People who committed the "HEINOUS" ACT of making a videogame should be "stoned in the street?" Friggin' hypocrite.
And frankly, if I was Rockstar, I'd put that quote ("Grand Theft Auto is heinous...") right on the package! Sell 20 million copies! :D

@cheese, its the hyman (hehe) condo. its close the the top of the left side of the map. i think you have to get to a certain point in the game (not that far) to unlock the side of the map.

Thanks man, now if i can only find the free rocket launcher. I had it yesterday, but y'know, helicopters happen.
here's something I haven't found yet but heard about. I read somewhere that you can store the weapons you find at your hideout, but where? I've bought three buildings so far and nada. I'm gonna go buy hymen tower, maybe there?
buttasuperb
11-01-2002, 09:54 PM
ive heard of that too, but havent seen anywhere to store weapons.
at the hyman condo, its kinda weird, sometimes your chopper will be there, sometimes it wont. also flying that bastard is tough.

I got this game too, and MAN, does it rock!
I made it to the 2nd island recently, and bought the Hymen Condo for 14K :o
No matter, on top of it is a shiny Maverick helicoptor..

How do I get R3 to work? According to the instruction book you hold the right analog down to activate the special missions witht he ambulance, cop car, fire truck or taxt, but most the time I try it it never works.

Really? Just tap it, it always works for me, I like the taxi and pizza delivery missions.
So I bought a strip club, it's too much fun. You can get a private dance, then kill everyone in the joint.
Currently I am trying to get all the hiddne packages, i want an M60 at my house all the time.
Has anyone runacross a helicopter with guns on it? There's a illustration in on the box of one, but I haven't seen it yet.

haha, i did the same thing. the bitch behind the bar has a freakin machete.
as for the attack chopper, i think one shows up at some army base once you get all 100 packages. even then, i heard you have to kill lots of army dudes to get to it.
EDIT: did some reading about the attack chopper, and i guess its always at the army base, but if you get all 100 packages it shows up somewhere else where its much easier to get. looks like im gonna try and invade the army base tonight and get me an attack chopper
Cheese
11-04-2002, 12:48 PM
hmmm, the army base, eh? I keep going over there to get M60 refills. Perhaps when i get the minigun, or rocket launcher I'll plan an all out attack on it.
So have you seen the used car shop you can buy across from the airport? It's got like room for q0 cars, it's own paintshop and plenty of space, it's also 50G's. Better then the malibu club, that's 120G's!

I'm up to the Jury Duty mission now myself. Mostly been running around causing chaos just for fun and collecting cash. Just got the hidden package in the police station also (bulletproof vests and flamethrowers are your friend).
