Final NeoGeo game to be released in July
Samurai Spirits Zero Special will be the final game for the venerable arcade format.
TOKYO—According to retailers in Japan, SNKNeoGeo will release its final two home cartridge games for the NeoGeo in the upcoming months. The King of Fighters 2003 will be released on May 14, followed by Samurai Spirits Zero Special on July 15. Both cartridges will be retailed at 41,790 yen ($385), and will be produced only in a limited run, so retailers recommend customers pre-order the games.
The King Of Fighters 2003 has been operating in arcades since last December. The game featured a new tag-team system, and a new storyline featuring a main character that fights by using green flames. Samurai Spirits Zero Special is based on Samurai Spirits Zero with a number of minor adjustments, and the addition of historical bosses as playable characters. Samurai Spirits Zero Special is scheduled to hit arcades in Japan on April 22.
After Samurai Spirits Zero Special, SNK NeoGeo will release its arcade games on Sammy’s Atomiswave platform. Just as SNK NeoGeo released home cartridges a few months after their launch in arcades, games released on the Atomiswave will be ported to home consoles after a similar delay.

Didn't 2k3 already come out on homecart?
Still Special is shaping up to be awesome.

Is anybody else wondering what's next?
By the way, doesn't the title Samurai Spirits Zero Special just scream Japanese?

P.S. By "what's next," I didn't mean the next hardware. I was wondering about the future of the franchises. Are there any changes in store?

First off, I already made a thread on this quite a while ago, but can't seem to find it...
as for the future of all the series, KoF 2004, Metal Slug 6, and there's rumors of a Garou: Mark of the Wolves 2 (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE) coming on Sammy's arcade hardware: Atomiswave.
There's no home version of the atomiswave (it's a modified Dreamcast basically) but SNK/P will be porting to current consoles when possible.

It needs a badly translated or cliche subtitle, such as "The Tournament of Fate" or "Will of the Samurai".

I've had my AES for nearly six months. It came with 4 so so games. I've since picked up Slug 3, Slug 1 (MVS- I use a Phantom), SS2, FF2, KOF 98, and KOF 2002.
The AES has caused me to raise my standards in what I like from a video game.
It really is the pinnacle of 2D gaming. 8-)

The addition of a MVS to my collection directly led to the tons of dust covering my newer consoles.

:o Sas say for videogames, but we all knew it eas coming. Say does anyone think that atomiswave games will be coming out for the dreamcast? I bought a NeoGeo Years ago and then sold it quite quickly. I can't justify the expense. SO now I am Looking at buying a MVS cabinet(non-working) for a hundred bucks(If I can Get the Owner of the grocery store to Part with it). Off-topic, but does anyone have a link on where to fix an MVS?
PS I own a NeoGeo Pocket though and collect for it ravenously, its more in my price range.

I'm an MVS person, but the way they keep raising the prices for each homecart release makes me think it's a good time to end it. We all knew it would happen at some point. But we have plenty of classics to play, and hopefully a nice homebrew scene flourishes for the system.

I picked the worst time to invest in an AES. About two months after I aquire the console, "the end" is announced. Prices are destined to go up  I was luckier with the PCE, I guess (got it in November).
I'm not too disappointed, though. The only regret is that I don't have one of the better Metal Slug games. 2 or 5 would be good. I've purchased a good mix of games in a short period of time, and it'll be exciting to see what the future holds, for people like me, who are just starting out with "teh" AES collection.

And no more ROMs of brand new Neo-Geo games after this, too! At least, not for a few years. (This is a good thing.)

even though i dont have an AES (i went the MVS cabinet route) i am sad to see it go. i still plan on picking up an AES (hopefully this summer) and this announement will drive up prices which makes my future plans all the harder. we all knew it would happen sooner or later and we will just have to wait and see what SNK will surprise us with next.
also...its my 800th post.....yay for me..hahaha

With the rampant piracy, I'm glad to see SNK going to the Atomiswave, which is so far, unpirated. It's sad to see the longest lived system EVER finally go down, but at the same time, this means a new generation of 2D style games on current gen hardware :D Yay!
And I just started investing in MVS around Xmas....don't regret it one bit! Neo Geo is a whole nother world!

I'd hesitate to call the AtomisWave "current gen" hardware...

I'm too poor for AES, but I do love my MVS. I'm not too sad that there will be no new Neo Geo games considering nearly everything released since Playmore came around has sucked, but I do hope that prices don't start to get worse and worse. I only have 17 MVS carts, so I have a whole lot more great games to hunt for. :)

I had the chance to get an NEO GEO AES from a friend of a friend for only 50 bucks a few years back. The system had 4 games, 2 controllers and all the hookups. Me being the idiot i was I said "I must get the Dreamcast! its gonna be huge!"

For a collector of AES, this is not a good news, but when I look at the releases after original SNK went belly up, they're all fighters and sequals, I've not yet seen an original non-fighters released on AES since Sengoku 3 (it's not really a sequal, Sengoku 3 is more like a new game with Final Fight + swords). Ironically, the game sold poorly, Shawn still has 30+ games in stock and it was not well received. Since Playmore releases, the only games I actually felt good about putting $300+ down are Rage of Dragons and Samurai 5.
Perhaps it's a good way to end the console run as I don't feel like spending $300+ each year on rehashed KOF, Sammy can take all those games for Atomiswave. It was different back in 96 when there were so many original titles, these games are the most sought after today.

I hear ya, man. I haven't overly liked a KOF game since 2000. 2001 was the worst, in my opinion, but the others weren't so hot either. I'm just glad they haven't touched Garou Densetsu yet... Mark of the Wolves was magnificent, and I'd hate to see them follow it up with some crappy new game.

Playmore put out some fine games. Samurai Shodown 5, KOF 2k2, Matrimelee, and both slug 4 and 5 were all pretty solid titles. 2k2 is considered by many to be the only other playable KOF, 98 being the first. And KOF 2000 blew chunks, if you ask me, any game where I can just call a striker to continue a combo and kill you is lame as hell. I loved 2k1, even though alot of people hated that too. KOF 2k3 is sweet too, if you ignore duo lon.
Alot of people rip on Playmore, but personally, the old SNK put out alot of shitfests too-if you go on percentages, there's probably just as many good Playmore titles as there were SNK.
Rage of the Dragons is technically not a sequel to anything, since SNK didn't get the rights to the Double Dragon characters, even though it's CLEAR that's what they were planning.

You needn't be so defensive everytime someone says anything negative about Playmore. :/ Not everybody likes the games, accept it. You don't have to pop in everytime to talk about how great Playmore is and trash the games the these terrible, terrible heathen Playmore haters like.

It's not my fault if damn near everyone who hates playmore only does it because "they aren't the original SNK". How many people just issue a blanket statement that their games suck cuz they aren't SNK? The same people who overlook the fact SNK made a good number of stinkers themselves. And I hate listening to them piss and moan uninformed and fanboyish shit.
