View Full Version : System-selling games for the current generation

I'd like to make a list of games worth buying a system for. As such, they should be games you can't play on anything else, and are so uniformly excellent that they can decide you on which of the 3 current consoles to pick up. For starters:

GameCube
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Metroid Prime
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker
etc.

I'd say Halo and KOTOR are Xbox's big things, and the Metal Gear and GTA series would be PS2's.

I disagree with Metal Gear and GTA. They might have been systems sellers when they came out, but they're multi-platform now.

As much as I hate to say it, Final Fantasy X/X-2/etc. is the PS2 moneymaker and system seller, if you want to keep this to exclusives. No fanbase is more rabid than this. It's one of the only games I've seen all preorder customers pick up within days of release, unlike GTA, which about a third did not pick up.

Gran Turismo could be considered such, since it was packaged with the system at one point.

The Jak series and Ratchet & Clank series are also good exclusives.

KotOR is not an exclusive, and personally I think it's crap. That said, the fact that the other release is for the PC has helped sell some xBox units to people who want to play it but don't want to put down the money for a decent PC (I know one fellow who bought the PC release but his laptop couldn't play it).

I gotta add Eternal Darkness for the Cube.

I also must add Pac-Man Vs. X_x

One of the few games that my freinds and I will actually take the Mario Kart out of the cube to play. Pure gamming fun ;)

Gamecube

Capcom/Nintendo

PS2

Konami

Xbox

Bungie

Pretty simple eh?

Haha seriously though, I can't say much for Xbox, because aside from Halo, I haven't had much reason to pick one up. Graphics don't really matter to me, and I can't use Xbox live where I'm at, so that eliminates some of the big selling points too.

I personally got a PS2 for DDR and Contra: Shattered Soldier, but have picked up quite a few other games along the way. They are mostly Konami games however.

Same for Gamecube. Most of my Gamecube titles are Capcom or Nintendo titles. Viewtiful Joe, Resident Evil series, P.N. 03, Mario, Metroid, Zelda. The usual games that you know are going to have to be completely destroyed not to be worth playing. I also like the fact that Gamecube has a lot of games that aren't exactly what you'd consider "mainstream" games (even though some are ports from other systems). Skies of Arcadia, Ikaruga, Super Monkey Ball, Cubivore, etc... games that aren't really released to a lot of fanfare or anything, but are just good fun games. That was also a big selling point to me.[/u]

What about Onimusha on the PS2?

For Xbox, there's also Crimson Sea...the sequel's on PS2. Haven't played it but I'd probably like it.

You may think I'm crazy, but I bought a GameCube at launch mainly to play Super Monkey Ball. I saw the arcade game on G4 and couldn't resist. So, it might be a "system-selling" game, if only one system!

I bought a Gamecube primarily for Super Monkey Ball too. :)

I think that game has sold more Gamecubes than a lot of people realize, because I know a few other people that bought a GC for it.

Disgaea is what forced me to buy a PS2. But I don't think that there are too many hard core American Nippon Ichi fans so... it probably wasn't that important of a title to most other people.

Have to say though I think Kingdom Hearts was definately a deciding factor for a lot of people.

the majority of the game players out there will buy anything with the word(s) "Square/Squaresoft/Square Enix" on it =P

I would like to add Mech Assault for Xbox (now comes with the Xbox live kit)
and Ikaruga for GC.

Like me. That's all I play on the thing, despite having a few other good games available here. Mmm, Monkey Ball!

Eternal Darkness is an awesome game, but definately not a system selling game. I think it only sold like 250,000 copies?

It was essentially Super Monkey Ball and the Mario franchise (reputation, overall quality of games) that sold me on the GC and I am NOT a modern gamer... I agree that Monkey Ball has sold a lot more GCs than most people think.

My friend bought an Xbox just for Panzer Dragoon Orta. Though to be sure, Xbox Live is probably the console's MAIN system seller, along with any games that are live enabled.

I personally bought a PS2 for R-Type Final, Rez, and Space Channel 5 part 2 :D

Mario Kart: Double Dash
Metroid Prime
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker

I would definatly say that pretty much covers it for the GC. But those are systems selling games. I mean there are like 75+ other GREAT games, but I feel, at least in my opnion, the above mentioned are the ones that stand out the most. Other personal favorites, that should have sold like 500,000 more copies and the likewise in gamecubes if there were any real gamers left out there are: (What I mean is that too many great GC games are getting overlooked)
Prince of Persia
Viewtiful Joe
Eternal Darkness

Wasn't PoP on the PS2 or Xbox as well? I certainly know that PSO has been on nearly every console devised by modern man with ports on the PS2, Xbox, and even Wintel PCs LOL

Steel Battallion for the Xbox. I still have very little to no interest in the system except for that game, but I own one nonetheless.

Games worth buying a system for are in the eyes of the beholder, regardless of how universal it would be.

For me, it's Nintendo that has those games in spades. Wind Waker. Mario Sunshine. Eternal Darkness. Metroid Prime. If I didn't already have a cube I would've *bought* one to play those.

Xbox doesn't have much except Halo and KOTOR for me. And Say what you want about them being on the PC - doesn't matter to me. I'm a console gamer first and foremost - I'll never play either on PC nor would I want to (and I *do* have a PC capable of playing 'em).

The PS2 doesn't really have anything anymore for me anyway. The GTAs would've been system sellers before they came to Xbox. And I *am* interested in the latest Final Fantasy games. But a PS2 isn't about 'must have' games to me (like a Cube is). It's knowing I'll have lots of variety available and that *everybody* will be making games for it.
