NES Track and Field II question

I've been playing this game for a while and while I've pretty much mastered most of the elements of the game I've yet to make a vault in the pole vault challenge. Every time I try to make a jump anywhere it comes up "foul". I was wondering if it's a game glitch 'cause sometimes I can suck at a game, but not this bad. Anyway if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Jam the A button to run. When the tip of the pole is right above the chock(right in front of the mat), press and HOLD the B button, and let go of the B button when you want your guy to let go of the pole. It's actually easy once you get the hang of it, but tough at first. Good luck!
