I've been calling around looking for these recent gamecube release but have since had no luck. Sure, I could order them online, but I'd prefer to find them "in the wild," so to speak, so I don't have to pay S&H.
Space Raiders
Serious Sam Next Encounter
I used the store availability on Gamestop's website(apparently the only store to carry the games) and no store within 200 miles of me has either in stock. I'm just curious if anyone has seen either of these in store yet. I'm quite close to just saying "screw it" and ordering online.

Space Raiders arrived in stores TODAY.
Not sure about Serious Sam, though. Could very well be in today too.

Oobgarm,
Thanks, just checked again and saw that my local gamestop has 4+ copies of Space Raiders. guess I have to be a little more patient.
josekortez,

It's sort of a 3D Space Invaders update from Taito.

Danke schoen, Undead King. I guess I better hurry up and review another one of these 989 Sports titles so I can make a trade-in for Space Raiders.
BTW, on an unrelated note, Skies of Arcadia kicks ass on the Cube. That is all.

No store within 200 miles of me has Serious Sam either....but I actually didn't even know this game was released. I think I'll order it online though, because I really enjoyed the SS games on PC.

It's coming out for GC/PS2 shortly
(Early May, if I'm not mistaken)

Honestly jose, I've not played it yet. My GC is unplugged and im out of space to hold GC games at my apt, so its still sitting in its case back at my parents house.
Samurai Smurfette: No the Serious Sam thats comming out is the Sequel to the XBox game, (which was the PC port of the first batch of Serious Sam games). I just looked it up, and its suppose to be out today, and will be out for the PS2 and the GC.

The Cube/PS2 version is a NEW game.
Anyway, apparently shipments were delayed. The game was SUPPOSED to be out last Tuesday. But of course, no.. it didn't come in. And apparently not anywhere. Hmm.. I wonder if the official web site say anything...

I hear the PS2/GC version of Serious Sam is...."not good"
I've been thinking about picking up the XBox version simply for CO-OP mindless blasting fun. But I won't pay more than 10 for it...so the search continues.

Unless all the people who tell you the Cube/Station ones suck are morons that don't know fun when it sets them on fire with a flamethrower..
NO ONE badmouths Duke Nukem's rightful successor. NO ONE!
And, my store just lowered the price of the remaining Xbox one to $9.99.. I bought mine at $17.99 at GS. It was well worth $39.99.
I think the Cube one will rock almost as good as the Xbox one. And Serious Sam 2 will kick fucking ASS!!! :D

Who's Will Rock or Tuff E. Nuff?
Serious Sam is a serious upgrade to the Duke Nukem persona. Even the creators have been waiting patiently for Duke Forever. I think "When it's Done" will be never.

Picked up Space Raiders today. Only played about 10 minutes, but I'm loving it thus far. Picture Space Invaders with a third person perspective and you have Space Raiders. Pure old school addictive arcade style action. There appears to be a chaining system to rack up a nice score.
I'd highly recommend this if you're into the classic gaming style. While there is a "story" mode, it's clearly all about the score. If going for a high score doesn't interest you, I imagine this game will get rather stale quickly.

Heh, I wonder if Space Raiders (rhymes with Invaders - why I never!) can possibly have a sequel. Heh.
Is this on PS2? I guess it makes sense that they've been doing that Space Invaders revival stuff (tabletop etc.) recently.
Man, I've never felt so hyped about a game after just reading for a few minutes! An' Space Invaders really isn't my sort of game either! :P

Ed Oscuro,
As far as I know, it is a Gamecube exclusive in the Us. It is out on Ps2 in Japan and maybe PAL territories. I've heard that SCEA denied a US version but I can't say how true that info is.
Ed Oscuro
04-21-2004, 07:49 PM
It most certainly came out in PAL territories; did a little bit of searching. We're getting into this a bit late (original PS2 release was December 19th, 2002 according to the main webpage), but maybe the graphics will get a boost. From what I've seen it looks like a PS2 game still...

For Joe and any other interested parties,
I picked Space Raiders up today at a local Gamestop. The manager said they only received 3 copies of it, and I was the first to even ask about it.
I played survival mode when I got back home tonight, and it seemed pretty challenging. The game play is shown from a slightly overhead perspective that makes it seem 2-D while remaining 3-D. I guess Taito wanted to bring in today's mainstream audience. Still, as a guy who has casually played Space Invaders, there is sort of an SI feel to the gameplay.
The mechanics, as you would expect, are extremely simple. Just shoot with A, use your super weapon with X, and use bombs with Y. You can also roll while holding L or R while moving, but I don't really see how this is helpful just yet. Supposedly, you become invincible while rolling, but I haven't noticed it.
The graphics are decent, much better than the horrible cover art. It's pretty cut and dried, though. Don't expect Windwaker level graphics here, people. There are different types of aliens that each have different types of shots. The aliens are mildly grotesque.
All in all, I don't think my $8.35 after my trade-in at Gamestop has been wasted. Plus, it's nice to have another GameCube shooter other than Ikaruga (which I suck at)...
Also, on another note, this game has the thinnest GameCube manual I've ever seen in terms of thickness. The white precautions sheet is thicker. Talk about a budget game. IMO, I expect to see this game cropping up next to Bomberman Jetters and Blowout in a Wal-Mart endcap at some point, but don't quote me on that. It's purely speculation.
On another note, is Mastiff releasing anymore games for the Cube? And are they the same people as Mud Duck Productions? I just got Qix Neo today, too, and I'm wondering if these guys have a lock on Taito's catalog for the U.S.

Story Mode isn't much different than Survival Mode except there are cutscenes between the levels. There are 3 different characters to choose from, but I haven't really noticed much of a difference between them except for their special abilities.
Overall, the game is pretty bare bones.
Oh, wait a minute.
As more diverse types of aliens appear, the action gets more difficult. Also, by shooting the ships that drop the aliens before they get a chance to drop any, you get power-ups. I just got one that froze the screen. And holding L or R while running back and forth does make you invincible.
On second thought, this game is pretty cool. And I didn't have to import it.

I picked up Space Raiders today and I am enjoying it. If you go into it expecting Space Invaders as next gen budget title then you will enjoy it too. Nothing really special, just good old school fun and a cheap enough price tag.

I cam in here today thinking, 'Hey, I'll be the first to post some impressions on Space Raiders!' How mistaken I am.
I'll echo what the others have said. It's simple fun, and at $20 it's hard to pass up. I was more intrigued by the "Partial Nudity" content descriptor on the back of the package. Turns out there's a non revealing shower scene featuring the well-endowed female character in the opening cinema. LOL
This game is highly recommended to all classic gaming fans with a Cube, and anyone else looking for a good time at a cheap price.

Went to check my local TRU, guess what they have, 2 copies of Bust-A-Move 3000 at $39.99, I really want it and I'm still holding off until next pay check. They also have 4 copies of Ikaruga, this will be the second game to get.
Checked around and no one has Space Raiders, went back to my store, we have 4 copies in stock for $20? LOL, ShopKo doesn't have all the games but it seems to have a few games in abundance that no one else has.
On the PS2 side, my local TRU also has 3 copies of Sky Gunner, 3 copies of Guilty Gear X2, 1 copy of Guilty Gear X, there're simply too many games for me to get, so I'm watching those stock carefully and buy when I have to.

Ahh.. HERE'S this thread! Now I can reply.
I fount Sam yesterday and FUCKIN A! It is THE BEST GAME I HAVE BOUGHT IN A WHILE!
It is all the more better than the Xbox original Serious Sam. The extra stuff is awesome. It's like an upgrade. The levels are completely new, the enemies are great, Sam's attitude is as witty as ever and Secrets abound.
Whoever the dumbass was who told STRYCHnine it was "not good", is a complete moron. Simply put, this game rocks! The only way you can hate it is if you don't like First Person Shooters. And if you don't like FPS games, you SHOULD NOT BE REVIEWING THEM in the first place.
That's like when I saw a website where a Christian church Pastor revied "Dogma". Can you guess what he thought of it? LOL

I saw Serious Same for the cube today as well. However when anyone goes into a Gamestop or wherever, and sees the cube one, spend a minute and hunt down the PS2 version as well. The PS2 screen shots on the back cover are the worse blurry pictures that I have ever seen for a game. Its really bad, and shows that someone forgot to proof them before the copy was sent to the printer.

I was after the Cube only. But the GS employees asked me if I saw it yet, and they brought out one of each and man, it makes you think. I would have thought they'd use the same image for the backs of each with slightly different text (And logos for each system.) but damn.. Who got fired for that? :eek 2:
It almost looks (If you look at only the back) like it's a Used copy in which GS had to make a new label for. IE printing it out lo-res from a shot on a website on a color printer like they do all the time.

Here's a little info on Space Raiders
http://cube.ign.com/objects/495/495887.html?ui=gamefinder
It was released in Japan in 2003 and developed by Taito....hmmm....Space Raiders....Space Invaders....didn't Taito make Space Invaders?
While we are on the subject of HTF Gamecube games, has anyone seen Blowout for the cube yet? I've only seen it one store, a TRU, priced at $15, as opposed to $10 for the otehr consoles. I found one for sale on ebay, sealed and new. I ended paying $10.50 for it plus shipping.
Also, has anyone tried Go Go Hypergrind! or Bomberman Jetters??

Tonight, I finally played through all 6 stages in the story mode of Space Raiders.
WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD!
The game gives you unlimited continues, so I wanted to see what happened when I finally beat story mode. I played through it with Naji because I don't like the other characters very much. Anyway, during the final stage, you battle every boss again before the final boss appears. Honestly, the final boss isn't much of a challenge compared to the first two bosses. Still, I had to continue repeatedly before I got to the end.
The ending was pretty odd. The invaders blame humans for sending their radio and electrical waves into space, and they call us the invaders. As a matter of fact, the message in the high score area changes after you beat the game. It reads "YOU ARE THE INVADER" on the initials of the story mode section instead of "WE ARE THE RAIDERS." Not unlike the plot of a certain 80's sci-fi movie that won't come to me right now...
All in all, Space Raiders is a great game for what it is. Pure shooting action. I think tonight was the first time I discovered that you get weapon-ups after doing 10, 50, or 100 consecutive shots without being hit yourself. Not that it matters much with the final boss because it has an impenetrable shield that it took me 14 minutes to destroy.
Despite its flaws, I like it better than Ikaruga, but that's my opinion. I even wrote an article about it for my newspaper that was published yesterday in hopes that other folks will pick it up.
Now the question begs: F-Zero GX or Mega Man Network Transmission? Maybe a little of both...

My store still has a few copies of Space Raiders, I don't think it's not that rare.
IMO, the hardest to find GC game is Bust A Move 3000, I've seen only ONE copy at my local TRU, I think this one is even harder to find than NCAA Basketball 2002. FYI, TRU has started another sale, buy one game with green tag and get another free, I got Sega Soccer Slam along with another game, each ends up costing $10, check your local TRU as some games have few in stock.
