View Full Version : CGE Drawing vs. a Member-run Lottery or Raffle

To anyone who is curious about this policy, who might see no difference between the CGE contest and a raffle-style event, or between a raffle-style event and any other sale on the Buying and Selling forum, I thought I would share my thoughts.

1. The CGE drawing was webcast. There was no chance that any piece of the drawing would not be "on the level", no way anyone could suspect a "fix". The names of every person who entered were shown on webcam, cut from the sheets on webcam, added to the cup on webcam, and drawn from the cup on webcam.

2. The CGE drawing was made up entirely of DP forum members, not a mix of different places - so everyone knows everyone involved.

3. All of the money in the CGE drawing went into the prize and THEN some. I don't know if you noticed but we took the opportunity to give away five additional prizes including a NES Miracle Piano, Barcode Battler, a Famiclone, an R-Zone XPG, Intellivision handheld, and more. No profit was made by anyone involved.

4. The CGE drawing was sponsored by Digital Press, who own this website.

5. Having been run by the in-house team, no precedent was set to allow any member to run any kind of lottery anytime they want. This is what I fear the most - while Mr. D-Lite may be a stand-up guy, what's stopping the next guy who isn't so honest from fixing a contest, not delivering a prize, or otherwise burning a host of members simultaneously.

Things may seem unfair but you must believe that decisions like locking a lottery thread are difficult and are done in the best interest of this community. I've learned many things in my years of administering forums, and the team that moderates here is a veteran crew.

I hope this explanation will suffice.

It's good that you clarify this, Joe I think this should be stickied or made an announcement. Everyone who thinks about running any type of contest that is posted here needs to realize that directly or indirectly it would reflect on us. Joe's stance is pretty clear and understandable.

I'll shoot this to the top Joe, if you don't mind so everyone can read this and it won't drop off the first page.

Personally, I think the explanation starts and ends with that. Joe, it's your site, and you have the right to direct members as to what they can or cannot do.

I didn't realize permission was needed to do something that hadn't been done before, which is exactly what this implies. How about free giveaways, is that allowed? Sure, risks are involved in everything. Try rolling the dice on eBay these days. My "lottery/raffle" was never meant to follow in the footsteps of the drawing as a precedent. I was just trying to give people an interesting look at getting some cool stuff.

Unfortunately, people assume the worst with this type of thing, that the guy running it isn't on the level. I just hope that a thread I had that ran a grand total of 6 posts (most of which are negative, thanks) and now this thread that mentions me by name doesn't give me the reputation as a wild card here. I've got a perfect feedback rating at eBay (dragsy) and I'm a moderator and well-respected member at www.neo-geo.com. I've also had good deals with a number of members here as well. Personally, I'm disappointed, yet respect Joe and his decision.

Whoah, D-Lite, I was one of the posts in your other thread, but I have no beef with you. I was simply mentioning something that I thought was fact. I have no reason to believe your "Lottery" was crooked in any way.

EDIT: it looks like this 'drama diffusing' post was totally unnecessary. No one seems to be holding a grudge, and everything looks to be cool. I love this place :D

Still, I wonder, if given permission by the B/S mods, could members hold raffles? It's done on n-g.com with great success, although only the most trusted of members ever do it, and with rarity at that.

Hey, D-lite, I hope you realize the problem wasn't with you personally holding this type of raffle. It just raised the worrisome idea that some less-than-savory characters might emulate it to purposely rip people off. It wasn't a BAD idea, by any means!

Adam:

Ultimately, it has to be up to Joe. I don't think Achika or I are in the position of allowing any contest without Joe's consent. If he approves it, then obviously it is fine with us. If you do wish to run a contest, bring it up to Joe to approve it, he'll let us know about it. What I may suggest is something that I do. I donate prizes for DP-sanctioned contests. It's an easy way to contribute to the board and still bring out some community involvement.

Give it some thought and PM Joe, otherwise post back here and we can discuss this more. :)
