I just got Qix Neo yesterday, and I'm utterly confused about how to play it. It includes the original arcade mode. I understand that you're supposed to draw lines, but I keep getting killed by the worms. I can't figure what the object of this game is, and the manual is no help.

Basically there are two different kinds of bad guys. There are the guys that chase you on the lines you've drawn (including the outer border), they'll kill you if they touch you anywhere, and there is the bad guy (or guys) that are floating around in the center. The center bad guys can't hurt you unless you are drawing a new line or doubling back on a line that you started to draw. If you're "out there" in an area that hasn't been completed yet, and these bad guys touch you OR your line, you die.

So the basic play strategy is to keep away from the bad guys that travel on the lines altogether, and be sneaky about when and where you "draw" your new lines so as not to get zapped by the floating baddies.

Get it?

Do you know the Qix, Neo?

I'd like to add a couple of suggestions to that. First of all, try to section off the screen with partitions so that when the Qix floats into one of them, it's easier to trap it. Don't close the box you've made completely, either... just make the opening so small that the Qix won't be able to force its way through. Keep reducing the size of the Qix's enclosure as much as you can, THEN close it with a line for a huge percentage bonus.

BUT - make sure to close the tiny gap with a SLOW-draw line for double the score.

Draw a bunch of small boxes with the fast draw to partition off the board. Then close the major areas off with SLOW. Bickety-bam, high score.

I love Qix! :D In an old Qix strategy guide I had in 1983, there were three strategies for playing the game and racking up hi-scores!
1. The "Quadrant" technique - Divide the screen into 4 sections from the centers of each side towards the center. Hang out there. When Qix enters a quadrant, "slow draw" it in there and claim 75%! 8-)
2. The "Tree branch" technique – Build a "tree" from the bottom of the screen to nearly the top. Send out "branches" on either side, nearly touching the edges of the screen. Begin “slow drawing” to close off sections until you’ve trapped the Qix in a small enough area. w00t!
3. The "Trapdoor" technique – Make two small boxes in the top-right and bottom-left corners with a sizable opening in each. Start “herding” the Qix towards either box. At some point, it should bounce in there. Seal it quickly for the points!

I hope this helps!

I've always drawn small/thin boxes up the center, about halfway. Once I get the nerve to try and box it in, I just keep creating more small boxes, spiraling inward. Once the bastard is in a small area, I slow draw it to seal it off. 99% is attainable this way with some patience.

You can utilize the same tactic in Qix Neo/Ultimate Qix, only it takes a lot more time to do and there's a lot more crap to avoid.

Let me take this opportunity to recommend the Game Boy version of Qix as well. :)

What is Neo Qix, anyway? I'm not sure I've heard of it.

Plays somewhat like Ultimate Qix on the Genny. Neo is a port of the arcade game Volfied (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=10345), IIRC.

You'll get used to it. I used to get a game over with all 7 lives on easy on stage one, but now I can get to stage 4 without dying. My suggestion: Try to build a wall down the middle of the stage.

Thanks for your help, guys. I finally figured it out this weekend and now Qix Neo is one of my favorite PS1 games...

Can anyone explain the label variations with the Game Boy version of Qix?
