well, you could always order on from nintendo. You save on sales tax, but you have to pay 5 for ups ground, 7 for ups 2 day or 13 for overnight.

I plan to get GC PSO soon as well since DC is so full of hackers it's hard to enjoy online gaming :P just don't have a way to pay for hunter's license although I'm sure someone mentioned the first month is free.

Ok, I just finished setting this bad boy up. my character's name is Fluke, and man, this place is a ghost town. I honestly thinkg I'm the only person online right now. Hurry up you guys, this halloween motif and me being by myself in all these lobbies is getting kinda scary!

UPDATE: Scratch that, there are 4 other people online right now.

Is anyone selling the Japanese "keyboard/controller" for PSO yet? Will it work on a US deck? I can't imagine going back to using the controller to type with....

(I'm going under the assumption that the US version of the Keyboard/controller is still cancelled?!? Any news on this?)

Tempest

I am SO tempted to buy a GC now. But unfortunately I don't think I could justify it for PSO alone. Sure Metroid is coming out soon, but beyond maybe 5 or 6 games I can't see much else I'm interested in. I don't have the time to play all the PSX, Saturn, and PS2 games I missed out on the first time around. Add another system and I might as well never have a life again...

Besides, you know it's going to be hacked by cheaters in a matter of weeks. They always ruin it...

Tempting... So very tempting... If someone could give me conclusive proof that FF XI will not be coming out in NA I MIGHT just do it. I've always wanted to play a Multi-User On-Line Role Playing Game on a console system, but missed PSO the first time around and now I was saving myself for FF XI (which may never happen).

I don't have the time to play all the PSX, Saturn, and PS2 games I missed out on the first time around.

Especially if FF VIII is one of those games. Who needs a life anyway though?

I've got the GC, I'm just in a holding pattern. No new games 'till 2003 (except as gifts of course). So I have to live vicariously for now. If you can tear yourselves away for a few minutes I'm dying to hear about it..

OK I'm going to pick up a Gamecube with PSO tonight (FF VIII will just have to wait I suppose, not like it's going anywhere...). One thing I will need though is the Broadband adapter, but every place I've asked seems to be sold out. Are they really hard to find? Also I've heard people are getting disconnect problems with the BBA, any truth to this?

*waves*

I got it yesterday, but not the modem yet (no broadband in my town). I'm having the virtual online experience by playing it multiplayer with the kids...although the modem is calling my name and is getting harder and harder to resist.... *sigh* The multiplayer option is pretty cool, it can be used in a variety of ways, everything from stopping the nightly "MOM! YOU USED THE SYSTEM LAST NIGHT IT'S OUR TURN NOW" fights that used to happen when on the Dreamcast (ok, I was addicted, so sue me) to levelling up with one of the optional NPC's you can add....everything's more fun with a friend! I was a bit shocked and disappointed to experience lag...yes, you read that right...LAG...OFFLINE, when a 4th joined the game. *sigh*

I have to say I danced around like a little girl who just got the ONE thing she asked Santa for, when I recreated my Hunnywhirl named Faile Aybara...and popped into Episode II. THAT is what PSO ver 2 should have been...I keep getting lost on the new Pioneer 2.

So when I go online, you owe me a game or 12, Mr. Joe....

SaitoH doesn't have his copy yet, and BuffyDP is not going the PSO route just yet... *sigh*

Nope, you can play your Gamecube with high or low speed internet connections plugged into your GCN, as long as you have the appropriate adapter. You can do a Window ICS Connection I would think, but I'm not sure how this works exactly. I don't think it will cost anything extra, besides the cost of your ISP.

digitalpress
11-01-2002, 10:52 AM
You don't need a PC. Just snap the modem or BBA into the bottom of your GameCube and connect your phone line.

The Hunter's License (to play PSO online) is $8.95/30 days.

Tempest

Got the system. Got the game. Now all I need is to find a BBA and I'm set. Good luck though, I've checked every Gamestop, Best Buy, and EB in my area (and where I work) and they're all sold out!

Here's a question for everyone: If I'm just starting out should I choose episode I or II? If I do Episode I will I be able to intereact with the people on-line playing Episode II? What do most on-line people play?

Tempest

Anonymous
11-01-2002, 02:13 PM
Start with episode I. It's not as divided as you think. basically you choose the episode, and that defines the world you run around in, and you can choose the episode each time you play, so ain't no thing.

I've heard the episode II levels are beautiful, but I'm saving myself until I at least get to the point I was at (around level 16) on the DC version before I head to episode II.

Tempest
11-01-2002, 02:25 PM
I caved and ordered a BBA from Nintendo directly. It should be here by Monday or Tuesday. I guess I can play offline and get my levels up.

Now what type of character to be? I've been told that HUmars are a good starting character (close combat, pretty well rounded). That sounds good to me, but the Rangers with their ranged weapons sound appealing (I like to stand back and pick guys off at a safe distance). Actually the only thing that doesn't appeal to me are androids since they can't use techniques.

Any suggestions on character type?

Tempest

digitalpress
11-01-2002, 02:40 PM
If you like being the long-range sniper type and you don't mind playing a female character I'd highly recommend the RAcaseal. Ability to use all the very cool long-range weapons but also pretty skilled in close combat. Um, I think they're androids though.

HUmars are always a safe bet, easy to get started with.

Anything FO is strictly for intermediate players, IMHO. Newbie FO's get killed a lot and don't "get" the support role they're supposed to provide in team play. They're invaluable characters but I don't like playing with people who don't understand them.

I'm almost always a HUnewearl. I've played every character almost to level 100 on the original game but this one just fits me best. Lots of up-close combat with just a smattering of techniques. Plus they're slutty hot. :P

Tempest
11-01-2002, 02:49 PM
Well let me ask you this then:

How useful are techniques? I guess my main worry is not being able to heal myself quickly.

Also, how useful are guns? Is it fairly hard to stay far enough away from monsters? I know in games like Diablo ranged characters sucked because monsters would just rush you anyway.

Finally, which charcter is best used as a "Tank"? I'm talking about high hit points and high defense.

Ok I've made a HUmar. I know it's the most boring class, but hey I'm a beginner. I tried a RAcast but I'll be damned if it didn't take me 10 minutes to bring down an enemy and even then they forced me into corners. Rangers are definetly party characters, they suck solo (unless there's something I don't know).

Hopefully I'll be a fairly high level by the time my BBA comes.

No and November 3, respectively.

BTW The modem adapter won't work with AOL, Compuserve, and certain free ISPs (basically whatever ISP has you click on their icon to bring up their software) will not work. I recommend earthlink, personally. BTW this is true for the PS2 modems as well.

Achika

E-gads. Multiplayer is H-O-R-R-E-N-D-E-U-S! I just got done playing with my bf. The game almost caused a HUGE fight. So you can barely see what you are doing (only about a third of your characters body shows up in the split screen) And this is on a fairly average size TV. Everything is stretched and shrunk (yes at the same time, don't ask me how, but that's what it looks like) The camera will not auto-swing behind your character after a bit, even when you push the L trigger, it's hard to see. Plus, when you go through your menus there is no detail on what each thing is (like weapons--no stat data) And there is no map when you quest around the areas so no more "See my green arrow? Go there." And finally, as if the new lobby wasn't confusing enough, it's made much worse by the shrink-n-squash.

Oh, and does anyone else find the controls terribly sticky and unresponsive?

digitalpress
11-02-2002, 11:06 PM
No problems with the controls here... but I haven't played multi-player so if you mean JUST in multi-player then ... um... nevermind.

Played about 4 hours worth today. I'm going to be making my home on Vega block 9 so anyone casually getting into this who wants a sidekick step on in.

@Tempest: aiming is an art. Once you get it, you'll start showing your mad skillz. I was a terrible gun toter for the longest time because I played almost exclusively up-close bruiser types but have since mastered the art. As a ranger, you're gonna need to learn that fast!

Here's my biggest gripe. THIS GAME DESPERATELY NEEDS A KEYBOARD! Fumbling with the software keyboard sucks hard. You can get by okay in a simple romp through the levels but in a quest or in challenge mode- FORGET IT. Players need to communicate in these modes and it's simply impossible to play certain stages "quiet'. Also, the online game is 20% socializing, and that aspect is completely gone.

KEYBOARD. NOW.

portnoyd
11-02-2002, 11:26 PM
Yes, I'll troll around Vega 9 myself whenever I play. I'll be willing to take anyone anywhere, so just ask.

And why is the pipe and rez spell 5k EACH?! I mean, that's pretty pricey. Useful, but pricey.

And a question about the mines boss.... is there any way to stop the constant casting of paralysis? I'd be able to kill it by myself if it wasn't for this.

And. OMFG. Keyboard. Need. Keyboard. Will the import keyboard work with the US cube and PSO? Bc I'll get it as soon as someone says it will work. I can't take this.

And why is the pipe and rez spell 5k EACH?! I mean, that's pretty pricey. Useful, but pricey.

Just wait until you see how much the high level spells go for! Things cost money. Personally I still think it's too easy to make money in this game, and disks are priced low in comparison to other things.

And a question about the mines boss.... is there any way to stop the constant casting of paralysis? I'd be able to kill it by myself if it wasn't for this.

Hee hee! Part of the game! Find yourself some protection from lighting. On your armor its listed as "ETH". You can also prevent a lot of these attacks by knocking out the center "chandelier" of Vol Opt and when the pillars rise from the floor knock out the RED one.

I'm like Heloise, except for PSO :)

portnoyd
11-03-2002, 09:29 PM
Greeeeeeeeeeat. I couldn't be happier that spells get more expensive than 5k. :o

But I see what you mean about money, read on.

I "killed" (translation: watched and healed) the 3rd level boss. It's so much easier when you're with 2 lvl 22 characters instead of one lvl 10 :\

I usually concentrate on the center Vol Opt with Ice2. Does 110 per cast. I don't know if it was doing anything to advancing to the second form.

BUT, I somehow ended up with $4k when I cashed out afterwards! So I see what you mean.

And I got the rez spell! Yayayayayayay! Next time the pipe spell is available for me, I'll get that too. That Pipe spell will pay for itself in a few hours.

AND FINALLY, I got my router all set. Soif you're looking for partner, and portnoyd is on AIM, msg me and I'll probably be good to go. Just hit lvl 17 last night (at 3am! Whoo boy. Baaaaaaaaad thing).

Tempest

11-05-2002, 01:40 AM
Did you speak to a representative, or order it online? usually the reps have a quantity listing that says how many are left in stock and whether they are backordered. BTW if you call 1-800-255-3700 they can cancel that order for you. And, on some of the high profile stuff (like the mario sunshine bundle paks), Nintendo will have a date for getting them back in stock, but you just have to call to find out whether they have that yet. I haven't been to work in a couple days, so I don't know offhand.

Nice of you to assume that Nintendo is trying to ream you.

Plus, when you go through your menus there is no detail on what each thing is (like weapons--no stat data) And there is no map when you quest around the areas so no more "See my green arrow? Go there."

To get to these in multiplayer mode - hit X in the item menu for the item stats....and X (or Y - don't have a controller here at work *grin*) while in the level to put the map up. It is "fixed" and therefore a bit annoying, but it is there, shows up in the middle of the screen....

SHUT UP, YOU MUST ALL SHUT UP, NOW!!! :o

While I think it's great that all of you are getting to play PSO again, I must admit that it's also very frustrating to read as I was a huge dreamcast player, and don't own a GC.

My reasons for not getting this game is for the simple fact that $8.95 a month is way to much for this game, way to much! $250 for a GC, and this game w/adapter isn't past my reach, but the $8.95 a month charge is just unethical to me, and even though I could afford it, I refuse to pay that for this game. PSO is a great game, but in no way is it expansive enough, or worthwhile enough to pay that much, especially with its hacked past.

While it kills me inside not being able to enjoy on of my all time faves, i'm waiting out to see if the Xbox version is coming as it's toted to be free with the Live service, but then again that's just rumor. Also the hackers killed me on the first PSO, and the gameshark for the GC is due like next week I believe. I'm hoping that the unique ID tag on Xbox will hamper hackers as well.

So while I envy you guys, and wish I could play, I just have to sit on the fence, and wait this one out :(

Go into the main menu...find Chat. Then Shortcuts. Then you choose one of the buttons to register a chat symbol or word or phrase to. Click Register (I'm doing this from memory here at work, forgive me if I'm off a bit) - then it will bring up the soft keyboard. Click X to move to the next choice, I think it's the preset phrases, click X again to move to the symbol chats. Find the one you want, click it, and say yes to Are you sure. Voi-la, you have a chat shortcut.

Just don't do what I do all the time and forget what is where. I think poor Joe was SO confused when I would choose the wrong one over and over and over in our last game....

If you think that's bad, XBox owner must also pay the same $8.95/mo fee *plus* the $50/year fee to M$ Live network to use PSO online so that totals to about $13.15 a month for XBox owners. And that's on top of $250 for the system and $50 for the game, etc... etc.

Also because XBox would be using different servers, XBox and GC players won't see each other but there's a good chance that PSO for PC can see GC players if Sega decide to release PSO for PC in USA. (planned for Japan only at this time)

So pay up or lose it!

PS I still have DC version, a v1 that's free to play online but I hear Sega may shut down DC servers in a few months so... :/
