View Full Version : Video games are just getting surreal...

Just look at this, for instance. It's Sega Superstars, a new game for your EyeToy camera that lets you interact with your favorite Sega characters.

I'm still having a hard time believing that this is for real. If it were any other year but 2004, I would be absolutely certain that this was some awful April Fool's joke.

This is interesting...I can't really imagine this system than being much more than a touchless stylus. Yay, the cursor or whatever moves to where you aim the camera. So?
I love how Sega was "demonstrating" that products like this will "extend the PS2's life-cycle". First off, I'm sure that Sony has PS3 all ready to go and they're just waiting for the pre-determined date of PS2's funeral anyway. No gadget is going to extend the system's life cycle. PS2 is #1 right now, right? So that means the only thing that will kill it is either a) a better system comes along with actually marketable software, or b) Sony kills it themselves with their own new system.
Also, Sega is INFAMOUS for unloading millions marketing gadgets that, while cool, are really kind of impractical for most people (32X, 3-D glasses, internet access for a system that only shipped 50,000, or whatever) and as a result they never take off. Sometimes (like with the Dreamcast, sadly) it even ends up killing the machine faster by barfing out money on a product that people don't buy.
Pay this peripheral no mind. This industry isn't going to change much until Microsoft releases Xbox2. Like we even need another one.

Something tells me you're an X-Box fan.
I like the concept of the Eye Toy, it lets you stick your face in games and detects movement, but as it stands right now it's pretty gimmicky. I'm probably going to get one eventually but I'm going to wait for the price to drop considerably. Someone with a lot of good ideas could come up with something to make it a tried and true peripheral like the light gun or a mouse. I think a boxing game that detects movement well would be a fantastic idea.
First thing I would do with the Sega Eyetoy game is smack the bejeesus out of Sonic the Hedgehog for making his last three games.

I'm glad to see that Sonic Team's talent is being put to good use.

Sonic Team's working really hard to produce pure shit these days. But I'll rant in another topic.

Something tells me he's analyzed the market. :)
Microsoft has done a lot of learning in a very short time, and that's made the Xbox a very potent competitor to the all-conquering PS2.
I think he's right - when they reveal Xbox 2 (or whatever it's called), we may see a serious shakeout in the industry. Hopefully Nintendo will do something/anything to get some of the major developers back on their side again, or I fear they may come up with the short end of the stick in a couple of years.
All the current systems do their job very well, but (after several months of fun...uh, "research") I can say that Microsoft has gone to great lengths to create a game machine for real gamers. They're now a force to be reckoned with, for sure.

I was going to post a thread about the EyeToy, but this one will do.
At first I wasn't sure about it. I mean, cool gadget. Useless. Fun. Will be put on a shelf shortly after buying it.
But now it looks as if it might succeed.
They just recently released the "EyeToy Groove" expansion. I love the look of the box and if I was rich, I would probably buy the EyeToy original, the Groove with camera boxed set and the Groove separate disc. Just to have down the road. I think it's a neat toy. And it does seem developers are actually making use of it. Some may be cheesy, but some are really good ideas.
I will probably end up buying this one too just because it's a cool idea. Maybe not practical. But cool. If the PSTwo down the road has a USB port, I will be the more happier. Since that's the only way I'll get my own PS2. The other one is my brothers and it will stay in his room for a while But I have said I'd gladly buy a PSTwo if it came down to $50. And when it does, I'll expand my collection with tons of exclusives like Jak and Ratchet and such. I think a boxed EyeToy would be a great addition.
By the way, the link at that article to the FTP site on Sega is really cool. High resolution images rock!

The Eyetoy already HAS succeeded, Jasoco :D I think the original sales target was under 100K units; all of that original run sold out quickly and they went back to produce more. Long term gamers might think it's gimmicky, but casual gamers (or non-gamers) love it. One of the ladies I work with walked up to me on Saturday and started raving about it...she said her and her grandson must've spent half an hour at a store playing with the thing. I said gaming's changing...and I think that's in a good way. This is nothing like all the millions of Sega peripeherals that only fanatics like myself and Racoon Lad pick up; it's an ingenious device that reaches out across demographics like nothing has for quite a while. It's almost like Pac-Man in that regard...and I'd say certainly more popular than Rez which didn't do too shabby either.

if you check out the screenshots, I'm tempted to get it for only one reason:
Playing Samba de Amigo without need for maracas.
Check the screenshots, that's damn cool

What? Maracas rule! That's the best part! You get maracas! That's like saying "Now I can drink alcohol without that bothersome intoxicating effect." Without the maracas, man you're just... standing in front of the TV doing a stupid dance. At least with the maracas it's a stupid dance with a latin flavor.

Not like anybody cares now, but I guess sarcasm doesn't come across well in print. Actually, I don't like Xbox in it's current incarnation. I have a friend who tests for Microsoft, and he claims that it's getting better. There's a game in the works called Fable that seems to be an incredibly detailed and less-cinematic Shenmue (that's a brief explanation...)
As for whoever said that Microsoft made a machine for gamers...I don't know about that. I think they made a very solid, advanced machine for PC gamers. I haven't been really impressed with the software, but that's just me.
But I'll at least say that Microsoft is right in focusing on software right now, and not on gadgets. That's my 2 cents.

Heh....my wife thought the Eyetoy was ok, but if there are neat Sega games for it....I'd SERIOUSLY consider getting one.

Nah, he just said two posts up he was being sarcastic, which comes across in print wonderfully. That's how you be sarcastic in text, you italicise lots of crap. LOL I was wondering what the hell a hardcore x-boxophile would be doing on a classic gaming forum.
I'm actually a bit quick to the gun with X-boxers. I was showing my friend's boyfriend Disgaea and all the neat crap you could do in it and his only response was "Pfft. These graphics look like crap" then walked away. He's basically the embodiment of everything I hate about the video game industry.[/i]

I don't want to talk about Fable - I'm just too pissed-off that Peter Molyneux is abandoning the PC-peeps and not bringing it out for the PC. Do they think we want to play another dumb Black & White game (which IS being released for PC)? I don't care to teach another creature where he has to poop, and not to EAT the poop.

Well can you blame him? The PC market is pathetic anymore in terms of what is selling. You have about 10-30 titles tops, and only about 10 of those sell well, you have fps, and mmorpg, and sims, thats about it. I used to mainly buy pc games about 3 years ago, but things dry up, or you have to wait forever to have it released on the pc. But if you are a cheapassgamer (tm) you can clean up on buying pc games. they tend to drop a hell of alot faster in price.

The Eyetoy sounds like it could be fun to play with my kids. How would a 2 and a (highly skilled gamer) 4 year old do with it?
