Would someone be so kind as to explain to me the chronology and translated names for the Final Fantasy Series ? I know what we have as FF2 (SNES) in the US was FF-something in Japan. Plus with the PS1 releases like Anthology and Chronicles, I'm all confused.

I have a table that I refer to when there's chatter about the Japanese releases because I can't keep them straight in my head. Unfortunately that table doesn't look so good when pasted into a post, so here's the pretext I had in front of it which gets things started, anyway...

With the buzz of FF XII in the air and the chatter of PC and PS2 gamers enjoying their FF XI online experience, it seemed like a good time to go back and check out the series in general. The good news for collectors is that the series is so popular that there isn’t a single title that’s “hard to find”. You can expect to pay a price for the Super Nintendo-based FF II and FF III, but that’s not based on scarcity, it’s based on demand. The previously difficult-to-find Final Fantasy Tactics on PlayStation has been re-issued and is likewise very easy to track down today.

This list does not include the Japanese games, and it may be of interest to import game fans that there is still one game in the series that has not been made available to us on these shores. The actual chronology of the games is best represented by the Japanese titles because they were all released there initially, and some of the games were re-named for us in the US to keep some form of continuity:

The original Final Fantasy (Famicom) was released in the US as Final Fantasy (NES) as well. This is the last time the numbering between regions will match until we hit FF VII!
FF II (Famicom) was not available in the US until FF Origins was released for PlayStation.
FF III (Famicom) was never released in the US, though there are rumors that it may appear on the Game Boy Advance one day.
FF IV (Super Famicom) was released as FF II (Super NES) in the US.
FF V was not available in the US until FF Anthology was released for PlayStation.
FF VI (Super Famicom) was released as FF III (Super NES) in the US.
The series numbers get back on track with FFVII and all titles since this one match across regions.

Here are a few other tidbits for the completists among you. FFVII and FFVIII also appeared on PC, and as of today, FFXI is the only online version. FF Chronicles actually includes FFII and Chrono Trigger (Super NES) games. Finally, there are spin-off games involving the recurring Chocobo creature called Chocobo’s Dungeon and Chocobo Racing, both for the PlayStation.

This is as best as I remember right. I'm sure there are other people more knowledgeable about FF than me.

NES
FF1(released as FF1 in the US)
FF2(not released in the US, there's a WIP Beta floating around on the net for a US release?)
FF3(not released in the US)

Snes
FF4(Both a normal and easy mode version were released in Japan, The Easy mode version was released in the US as FF2)
FF5(not released in the US)
FF6(released in the US as FF3)
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest(who cares :P )

Gameboy
Final Fantasy Legend US title name(First game in the Seiken Densetsu/secret of Mana series)
Final Fantasy Legend 1, 2, 3(Part of the Saga series in Japan)

Wonderswan
Final Fantasy 1(not released in the US)
Final Fantasy 2(not released in the US)

PSX
FF4(not released in the US
FF5(not released in the US)
FF6(not released in the US)
FF4, 5, 6 got released together in Japan as one package called Final Fantasy Collection.
Final Fantasy Anthology(contains FF5 and FF6) US release of Final Fantasy Collection.
Final Fantasy Chronicles(contains FF4 and Chrono Trigger) released in the US only.
Chrono Trigger got released separately in Japan
FF (Japan only)
FF2(Japan only)
Final Fantasy 1, 2 LTD version(not sure on correct name of this. Just a limited version that had both games released together I assume.)
Final Fantasy origins(US release of FF1, and FF2)
Final Fantasy Tactics(released in US under same name)
FF7(released as FF7 in the US. There also an international version that was released in Japan only later with slight changes)
FF8(released as FF8 in the US)
FF9(released as FF9 in the US)

I have no idea on the PS2 as I don't own the system but I'm pretty sure all the FF got released in the US.

Oops look like someone beat me to it.

Not quite, Final Fantasy 3 (famicom) has yet to see a US release in official form. Hopefully a GBA port might change that?

Gameboy
Final Fantasy Legend US title name(First game in the Seiken Densetsu/secret of Mana series)
Final Fantasy Legend 1, 2, 3(Part of the Saga series in Japan)

The Seiken Densetu game was called "Final Fantasy Adventure" in North America.

I also like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance quite a bit. I might as well also mention Final Fantasy X on the PS2, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles on the GameCube, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (theatrical release), and Final Fantasy: Unlimited (crappy animated series).

In Japan they also had a Chocobo's collection which basically packaged the Chocobo Dungeon games and Chocobo racing together.
