Ha ha! Someone that I work with just gave me Xenogears for free!

I hear it's a great game - is it worth me committing to? I hear it takes a while.

I hate it. If you like games that firce you to talk to every single person in each and every town for an hour just to find the one right guy who will advance the storyline, you'll love this game. Otherwise, shelve it. The battle system is cool. Story? Interesting. But I will NOT have my time wasted by going around and talking to every insignificant NPC just so I can progress in the game.

Funny.

I would say its the greatest RPG of all time. Excellent and very unique battle system. Compelling story with lots of twists, great music and decent graphics for ps1) to boot.

That's what I have heard. My list of games to beat right now is so long that I dont know when I'm going to be able to get to this sucker. I mean, Shenmue 1 & 2 are in my queue as well as Wind Waker and Metroid Prime.

When the hell amd I going to find time for this.

Can anyone tell me about the "religious overtones" that I have heard about in this game that cause it to almost NOT be released stateside? That's what makes it so interesting to me...

I don't want to ruin any part of the story for you...but I didn't think the religious stuff in the game was that "bad". As for the game itself, I loved it. A good battle system with a good story = a good RPG in my book. Sure there were some parts that kinda dragged on (lots of talking), but I was into the story so it didn't seem that bad. Overall its a very solid RPG.

Not without spoiling a lot of it. None of it is "bad" (depending on how religious you are). The most I think that can really be said is that a lot of the game shows the creation, rise, and fall of religion significantly caused by political interference.

Don't play RPGs much do you?

I thought the game was pompously philisophical at times, but it didn't detract much from my enjoyment of the game. It has an interesting tight storyline regardless, which is a lot more then you can say for most RPGs. And you know it has Mech battles. Who doesn't like Mech battles? :P

Characters were pretty well fleshed out as well. It's considered a classic for a reason, and hey you got it for free. Quit asking us for opinions and go try it out for yourself. :P

Yes, I think it's safe to say that I do "play RPGs much." They're pretty much my favorite genre. I've played and beaten many, many more RPGs than what I own as well, and there's no way anyone who's well versed in RPGs should ever be calling Xenogears "the greatest RPG ever." I've included action RPGs in the above list, just to alleviate any confusion on what can be considered an RPG, even though I, myself, consider games like the Zelda series to be "adventure."

And how do you cope with all the games that make you talk to the towns people? Mostly a problem encountered with 8 and 16-bit crowds I'll admit, but you have a few of those on your list.

My point was not that you don't play RPGs, but rather your complaint was silly when lots of "good" RPGs are guilty of the same offence. But given your apparent dislike of the game, that can't possibly be your sole complaint with it.

But mainly I was just teasing. :P

Edit: I also find it ironic that the idea that someone would hail Xenogears as the best RPG ever would upset you so much when you practically own every US Final Fantasy release (could be a bad assuption on my part but could it be your favorite series?) when that's probably the single most over hyped series in gaming history.

And you haven't beaten Rhapsody? Shame on you... it's only 10 hours long. :P

It might be the difference in the size of the towns. If I have to talk to every in a town in, say, Illusion of Gaia (which you sometime have to do, I'll admit) it might take me 10 - 15 minutes. 20 at MOST for the largest towns in the game. In the town in Xenogears where you meet the big green guy (sorry I can't be specific, it's been a LONG time) it LITERALLY took me well over an hour to talk to every single person in that town until one of them triggered the story even that took me to the next area. That was an HOUR of chatter, most of which was irrelevant to the story and irrelevant to me, and stank of trying to raise the "time to completion" of the game. Maybe someday, if I'm REALLY bored, I'll go back and play it with a guide that tells me who to talk to so I can stand it, but I was more than halfway through the game, and the story wasn't THAT compelling anyway.

re: the teasing. I wasn't angry or anything. I was just trying to prove a point. I do indeed play and enjoy RPGs. Just not Xenogears.

Jeez, I opened up a can of worms. The worms they still be fresh! I'll definately play Xenogears. Right after I beat Shenmue 1 & 2, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime & Head hunter, and FF8 and Megaman X7 and Onimusha 2 and... and... and...

Oh, I'll definitely be playing Rhapsody and Valkyrie Profile both, probably over the summer. I paid enough for VP, and the friend who bought Rhapsody for me overpaid enough that I HAVE to play them.

Glad your choosiing to play xenogears. Loads of fun theres a bit of a problem with it though. Disc 2 is way different then 1 there is a LOT more stoy in disc 2. It almost seems like the dev tem ran out of money or time. Plus once you beat the game you can have the joy of watching the movie xenosaga! LOL

Jive3D

yeah whats the deal with Xenosaga for PS2? Is that like a precurser to Xenogears. Someone told me that the timeline is similar to star wars in that Xenogears, even though its the first game made, takes place like 4 chapters after Xenosaga?

sisko

Xenogears is Episode 5, Xenosaga is Episode 1.

Xenogears, you get a complete story line. Xenosaga kinda just stops, and sets you up for episode 2 (ala Lord of the Rings movie style)

My main complaint with Xenogears (and one reason I enjoyed Xenosaga better) was due to the over complex and confusing story. I mean, you should'nt have to read a huge guide explaining what the hell happened in the game AFTER you beat the game.

I still say that they arent related.

Ahh, Disc 2. AKA, goodbye game, hello mostly noninteractive slideshow. I mean, I do like RPGs for the story, but I would prefer my game to be more game in the second half. Lost interest to the point where when you actually get control back (at the very end), I just wanted to shelve Xenogears (actually, went to eBay out of never wanting to play it again).

Well they are, it's just no point emphasizing the fact until we see if they actually get around to making all five episodes, if they don't the games might as well not be related.

Blame Square for that one. They wanted to rush Xenogears out the door so the team could work on FF8. X_X

was either rushed or the funding went to FF8

There are rumors about funding being pulled away from Xenogears to FF8, but a interview I saw online last year from one of the former Squaresoft design people said it was just a case of the company working on too many games at once, there was'nt enough money and people to go around, and release dates had to be kept. Forced to pick between projects, Square went with Final Fantasy as the number one effort (IMHO the right choice, as that has always been their bread and butter) and the other games suffered some (sutff like Einhander, Chocobo Dungeon II, and other games).

Jive3D
04-30-2004, 01:42 AM
Einhander Suffered? That's my favorite squaresoft game!! If any of their games EVER suffered from just plain out sucking it's Parasite Eve II. But I digress... with all this talk of funding being pulled, I might not even get around to playing Xenogears. Shenmue is still on the top of my list. Surpasses metroid and Zelda. YOU HEAR THAT NINTENDO?
