My wife is going to be kind enough to get me a Gamecube for my birthday. Hopefully the Platinum edition. Anyway, just wanted to get everyones opinion on the top 3-4 titles to date.

BTW as far as "next-gen" goes, I only own the XBox right now. I'm really looking forward to having both these systems. Probably won't pick up a PS2 until it's $50 used.

For many old-school Nintendo fans, Mario Sunshine, Star Fox Adventures, and Metroid are irresistable, no doubt.

Myself, I find myself attracted to Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2, and I simply must get Godzilla: DAMM!

I'd say the must have stuff (that I currently own) would be:

Super Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Super Monkey Ball, Super Smash Bros. Melee

My other stuff (Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars: Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2, Wave Race Blue Storm) is good, but not necessarily must own. They're just a cut below in my books.

Stuff on my want list: Animal Crossing, Metroid, Zelda, Super Monkey Ball 2, Resident Evil.

I'll second (or third?) Eternal Darkness. Loved that game. Add Animal Crossing too. I don't even know why I like this game so much, and I feel like a 10 year old girl when I'm playing it, but well... maybe that's what I've always wanted.

I'll have to report back on Starfox Adventures and Phantasy Star Online. Just got them and haven't dug in yet, but the little bits I've played of them (mostly at E3) were really impressive.

Another vote here for Eternal Darkness. Also, you can't go wrong with monkeys trapped in translucent balls!!! Super Monkey Ball (1 or 2) is a must have. If you're looking for non-specific GC titles, I also enjoyed the Spider-Man game.

I simply must get Godzilla: DAMM!

I played this on the weekend. And it is the best fighting game there is at the moment, and I don't really like fighting games.

Don't forget the Sonic collection when that comes out if you're intrested in those games.

Play Magazine's capsule review of Sonic Mega Collection is disappointing -- Sonic CD is NOT included and there is not save feature in Sonic Blast (or any of them? It seems to say that).

Still worth getting, unless you have the Saturn's Sonic Jam.

Believe it or not I still have not played Mario Sunshine, but I would assume that since it's Mario's true debut on the system that it must be a must-own, just like his other games.

I can not recommend Super Monkey Ball any more! It is truely the most surprising game I've found. I thought it would be ridiculous when I bought it at launch but it turned out to be a really fun game with my friends. Good dorm room game. We got SMB2 and it is all that and....a barrel of monkeys? It's an extreme "watch your step" up from the original in difficulty, but well worth it.

I also have Resident Evil and endorse that with my KSA (Kevin Seal of Approval). Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is one I would look for too, cheap.

Personally though I am a sports fan and feel inclined to recommend NCAA Football and Madden 2003. 8) May just be me though.

Yet another vote for Eternal Darkness. My GameCube favorite.

I'll also throw in Mario Party 4 if you have some people that can play with you. It's an awesome 4-player game.

Must own games? Eternal Darkness and Super Smash Bros. Melee. And, if you don't already have the original, Resident Evil REmake.

all of the ones mentioned here so far have my vote, they are all great. another great game is nhl hitz 2002(i love this game and i am not a sports game fan at all).you get to have fist fights on the ice and you can unlock cow (and other types) heads, and cool stadiums. i think 2003 is out now, but i haven't played it yet. star fox adventures is awesome too, i beat it a few days ago.

Most underrated game on the Gamecube (and nextgen as a whole): Burnout. This game is amazingly fun, and wicked cheap now (I bought my PS2 version for 13 bucks at EB last week).

Another non-console specific that's great is Tony Hawk 4, although if you have a PS2, choose the latter version instead.

Super Smash Brothers Melee is great alone or against others.
Animal Crossing's good, but it does get a bit old after a while (and trying to get matching furniture can take a very, very, very long time)

Rogue Leader is a fine game to get if you like Star Wars. Maybe not full priced, but it's worth it used (I got my copy used at EB for less than $35 Cdn). Crazy Taxi is fun, although it's a straight port of the Dreamcast version (for some reason the game is ported by Acclaim, not Sega). The controls take a while to master but it's a fun action game.

The Resident Evil games and Eternal Darkness are must-haves if survival horror is your style.

I'm really looking forward to Zelda and Metroid...

As you can see, there's something for most genres, except when it comes to RPGs (at least for now, although PSO, Zelda and the upcoming Final Fantasy should compensate for this shortcoming).
