View Full Version : Suggestion for the DP site

This has probably been suggested before, but is there anyway that we could have a collection listing similar to the ign.com listings. I find two main problems with the IGN site that could be fixed if DP were to do this. One, you can't list systems, hardware, or accessories on ign. Two, ign is missing games, and does not add them when an email is sent requesting the addition. For example, i have a super game boy for SNES, but on ign it says that this was cancelled, yet it obviously wasnt. I have that Lucasarts disc for the XBox, but I can't add it because IGN doesn't have it, among other things. I just think that a listing like this on DP could be better and with everyone's knowledge, nothing would be missing from the listings.

well, I have to admit that no other site is better equipped to have a listings like DP here, but would that complicate the already rough bandwidth problems?

which reminds me, did the bandwidth get better lately? I've seen few hiccups. Hurrah!

i havent seen any bandwidth problems lately, and my school connection usually has problems with this site and even at college it has been fine.

Bandwidth problems aside, another problem I have with IGN is it takes a very long time to locate stuff when you are doing a mass update. You can't just click on the NES section anymore and check away. It always shows it has more than 500 items, causing me to wish that they had an option to separate regions. It could make it easier.

Maybe have some sort of fee or package...perhaps bundling the "online collection" capabilities in with a subscription to the DP zine (for a higher charge of course) would work? That'd help cover some bandwidth costs probably. I don't know, and I'm not even certain I'd use it (aw hell, I probably would) but it's a nice thought. I love the searchable database here already!

Been playing with the IGN Collection thingy as of late.

My issues:

* Game values seem to have been pulled directly out of someone's ass
* Missing support for some of the truly obscure (no RCA Studio II)
* Adds games to my "wishlist" rather than my collection without warning
* Automatically puts games on a "watch list" (sending me unwanted e-mail)

DP could really use something like this, of a similar design but with better info and a more useful interface. Then I'd also be able to get DP values rather than supposed "retail" prices.

But then again, not if it's gonna suck up too much bandwidth. @_@

I'd do that. I just needed one more excuse to send more money to DP, and that might be it... LOL

This would be perfect, since I don't collect PAL or Japanese stuff at the moment.

Connection's been really bad for me. I live in the southeastern USA.. I have a T1 campus connection capable of over 1100 MBytes/sec down, 900 KBytes/sec up ... but each post I submit regardless of length takes 2 minutes to send. :P Each post then takes 30 seconds to load .. Most of the time is spent in 'Waiting for digitalpress.com', not transferring actual data ..

I can explain that - you're loading the wrong site! digitalpress.com is a German photography site. It's digitpress.com that you want!

That said, there are STILL bandwidth problems because we STILL haven't moved. Without airing the dirty laundry too much I"ll just say that I've been waiting for our admin to complete this single task for months now.

Patience. And note that crying about it isn't going to speed things up for you either.

no but he is right, as soon as the connection is established it is fast enough, but the connecting takes up some time, maybe this is more a setup issue than a bandwith issue

Getting back into the discussed subject... I like the idea, although I'm sure it would really eat up more of the DP bandwith...

One thing I'd like to get or find, if it's possible, is a function of randomizer. You know, have a whole list compiled, click a simple button and voilą! A title chosen at random! I'd need that to force myself to give equal gametime to my different games and platforms.

On a separate note, I wish that this game database software (http://www.collectorz.com/game/) was avalable for the Mac. Anyone knows if it's even a good software?

yea, i didnt list those problems in my inital posts, but those things also bother me. i personally wish the value thing was correct, so i would know how much my shit is worth, but even if their game values were right, i would still be lacking a hardware and accessory value.

please joe, consider adding this feature to DP once you have the bandwidth problem worked out
