Arcade? I heard a rumor it would be a handheld. But then again, it was a TOTALLY unconfirmed rumor.

i'd have to say that this is either an arcade game, or a complete rumor. i doubt they will make a new home console, but i guess we wont know for sure until may 12th

I'd hit it. LOL
I'd really like to see a new Sega console, but I'll just wait to see what's going on. I see they signed on with so and so to create new arcade hardware.
Heh, I could use a Sega arcade system in my house as well ;P

If it is some type of hardware announcement, which I doubt, it will be doomed to failure once again. Unless, they have purged the corporation of the management and marketing teams that were responsible for the debacle of the Saturn, and the tragic loss of the Dreamcast.

I don't know.....the market is having a tough time supporting all three current makers, trying to rebreak into the market this late in the game would be a fatal flaw.
Also a handheld wouldn't survive either with the complete dominance of the GBA and the near released PSP.
If they were going to release something, and for it to be successful, , it would have to be specifically targeted to a niche group. Something along the lines of the AES. I'd love to have a NAOMI2 home unit though :D
If it is a new console, I'll definitely be on board though.

I have NEVER bought a system on release day, I always wait about a year or so (whenever the price drops enough). Now, if Sega was to come out with any kind of system, I swear that I WOULD break this habit, just to do my part in helping Sega out

I doubt this is possible, but if they could make a handheld that would play both Saturn and Dreamcast games I would be in. Maybe designed like a portbale DVD player but with control buttons? I don't know.

That would be an oversized Game Boy Advance type setup.
I am now very curious. I can't wait 11 days. I want E3 NOW!!! :(

i was thinking it might be cool if they made some sort of set top box where you could download games from the vast sega library for a small fee. something for casual gamers, maybe even as part of a premium cable package, you'd have lots of games to chose from but no need to run out the store and get them. games-on-demand :)
i cant see them really using their legacy to build a portable system since they wouldnt be making cash off new games, the unit price would have to be really high. who knows, maybe they've got some sort of sega n-gage type thing up their sleeve.
I love Sega. They make the best games in my humble opinion. Initially I was horrified when the DC was put down. Then it came to me, "Fuck, I don't have to worry about Sega anymore, I can just play their games and be happy." I didn't have to "worry" about 3rd party exclusives anymore, I didn't have to "worry" about Sega going under and away. They don't sell as many pieces of software as they did on the DC, but I don't think they make quite as many games as they once did either. I might be off base on that one, but it doesn't seem like it. I am pretty confident that Sega is not getting back into the hardware arena. If they are then the management are fools. If anything, I would wait a generation or two until Sega becomes "retro cool" akin to Atari. I remember when I was a kid Atari meant failure, it meant the past. Now Atari is cool. People wear Atari shirts, fuck, I own one! Again, I really hope and am pretty sure that Sega is not going back to hardware for now. If they do I will be first on line to pick one up though.

I really hope that sega is gonna jump back into the hardware game, but i dont think they will simply because it's just too good to be true. But if they are going to release a new console they should wait till a little after the launch of PS3, and XBOX2. To get a feel for what the strong and weak points for the competition are. Sega has this horrible tradition of being the first to realease something, but executing, and advertising it poorly(sega cd, 32x, staurn, etc.). Bottom line if SEGA does make a new console, no matter when they do it i'll waitin in line outside of my local target to pick one up....

::speachless:: can't wait till E3 o.o , personally i think its gonna be something dealing along the lines of arcades, but if sega gets back into the home console business im going to pee my self and celebrate :D lets all hope for the best in this AMAZING announcement

so what is it that we "would NEVER guess" ? we'll see. heh
Indeed. I think it's unlikely that the announcement will be both "explosive" and something we will never guess. A new console or handheld would certianly be big news, but since those are the first two things I would guess, apparently that's not it.
If they announced they were going to start supporting the DC again, that would truly be something explosive I would never guess.
Sounds like a big tease to me.

you know....since the demise of sega......they have recouped their looses and are no longer on the brink of folding.....and sega's older systems have gained enormous popularity. I was never into sega in the old days; had a pitiful handful of eight genesis games, that was it...nowadays i've got every one of their U.S. Consoles....
If they do it right they could pull it off. I hear a lot of complaints that gaming has gone to shit; i believed that until i played vice city...but i still go to the old consoles more than the current generation...
IF sega could manage to make games that had the old feel, had that old rush...who knows, maybe they'll knock our socks off and start a return to 2d gaming.....give us what we want, extremely long games instead of this short stuff.....
they have a name. they have a legacy. And today they have thousands, maybe millions, of devoted fans that would buy the console simply because it's sega, coming back from the dead, even many of you have stated this.
As long as they dont fall into one of their classic mistakes:
1) overprice the unit
2)underproduce the unit
3) Under-advertise the unit
4) Under-support the unit game-count-wise
they can do it, and if we're lucky, theyll push sony and ms back where they belong...OUT OF GAMING

Sega has quite an impressive collection of titles under their belt. And are the
only 1980s manufacturer to still produce quality arcade games. But their 3rd
party policy is pissing me off. I wish they would just put the hits out on all
their consoles instead of putting out a few exclusives for each. House of the
Dead 3 (or better yet a complete trilogy) should be available for PS2 and GC.
And a Sega arcade classic set should have been released years ago. And
how is that Rez was a botched release for both the Dreamcast and PS2?

I cant wait to find out what their surprise is, but if I had to guess, it might be some sort of exclusivity deal with one of the other three companies.
roxybaby

I really don't understand exclusivity deals. Don't the game companies realize that long term all they're doing is hurting themselves by pushing hardware makers out of the business? If only two or three companies are left, or worse only one, they could just say no to picking up a game. And then you'd be screwed if you were a game company. If I was a game design company, I'd want maximum exposure.
That being said, I'd worry about Sega getting back into hardware because Sony has most of the exclusivity deals (I think), or at least early release deals, and it'd be very hard to compete with that.

:D
My wishes for a new Sega Console...
A HANDHELD system compatible with Dreamcast/Saturn (as well as a new updated technology). Also can be easily "docked" into a base unit for full home console use (4 controller ports/Hi-Definition, Composite, VGA output/Hard Drive etc).
Sure it's just wild impossible dreams but what the hell.....

Yeah, that's the first thing that came to mind for me too. I don't know if I would classify this as "explosive", nor do I think it would be good for Sega. Also, I would think that type of announcement would originate from Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft (being that all three cos. are power-trippers that would want to make the announcements themselves). Stiil this seems a lot more likely than a new console.

Yes, a new console would be great. Yes, a new handheld would be great. Yes - even the re-introduction of the Dreamcast would be great, but it won't happen.
Sega's always had a tendency to play it up even it's smallest of announcements, it's just their 'thing'.
EGM describes Sega at E3 the best:
"...even while they screamed "UNLEASHED!" at the press until we were wiping spittle out of our eyes [it's] hard for most showgoers to catch any of the excitement."

Sega has let everyone see what it is lilke not having them around in the system war. I really miss sega making systems.
I would like to see some 2d games that are just huge. I'm kinda worn thin on the 3d crap. with the exception of a few games, resident evil, rainbow six 3 gran turismo.
some games were meant for 3d.
i find myself playing old games... nes, master system, turbo grafx, genesis, snes and so on alot latly.
my girlfriends children dont even know what real gaming is. all they wnt to play is pokemon crap.... i mean how many times can you play the same game with one diffrent pokemon in it and a diffrent color cart. ( man nintendo can almost sell anything)
i have always loved every system that come out for some reaosn or another.
and if money permits i buy on the release day.
i cant wait to hear what sega has to say. :)

It really would be awesome if Sega came back to the console market. This way we KNOW that we would see Shenmue 3, Sonic Adventure 3 (give us a game where we play as sonic only!), and another game that would be INCREDIBLE to have at system launch would be SNATCHER II. Yeah right, in my wildest dreams. While we are at it, the thing might as well make me eggs benadict while I play it. :D

I'm certain that Sega will NOT be getting back into the hardware biz. We all know it would be doomed to failure before it ever started. As someone stated earlier, the current market is already crowded with 3 systems, there's no way it could support a fourth.
The annoncement is likely to be about an arcade-related project, or perhaps, something we really don't expect, but I really don't think its for another home or handheld console.
