View Full Version : How big is your unplayed backlog?

Hi folks,

I'm sure we've probably done a thread like this before, but I'm just curious about how many unplayed games other people on this forum have in their backlogs. Why haven't you played them? Also, do you ever feel guilty that you neglected good games in your unplayed pile?

This weekend, I bought 8 games when I know I have at least 10+ (possibly 20 or more) that I haven't played yet. Others ranging from Need for Speed: Underground to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to Space Channel 5: Special Edition have only gotten 5 minutes playing time tops.

I think my reasons are that I have a short attention span and not enough time. Since I mostly buy next-gen stuff these days, I've got stuff like Escape From Monkey Island, Parappa the Rapper 2, Wild Arms 3, Mega Man Network Transmission and Klonoa: Empire of Dreams that are still unwrapped that I plan to get to this week. Plus, my GameCube memory cards are almost full, so Cubivore will have to wait until I get a new one.

I try and at least play every game I buy, but sometimes if I buy a group off ebay in a lot or something, I'll forget about them. I'd say I have about 25 games I've never played, mostly because they're either games I got through one way or another that I'm not interested in, or they're big-ass rpg's I don't want to start and know I'll never finish.

Ugh, i'm sure I have over 100 games I haven't played much at all :(

Some games will keep me addicted for months :embarrassed:

I've got 20+ right now, but 6 of them are Final Fantasies--4,5,6,7,8,9.

Being much more of a player than a collector, this is one of the things I pride myself on. I just bought Chrono Cross and Monkey Ball 1, and that's all I've been playing. When I finish Chrono Cross and Monkey Ball gets too impossible in the 1 player mode, I might buy 2 more games. Actually, by that time the NES GBA will be out, so I'll probably pick that up and whatever games strike my fancy. I've been looking for a chance to get back into portable gaming, and I've been looking for a good excuse to get a GBA.

I wouldn't say I have that many games that I've never played, it's just that there are so many quality games that I'm in the middle of that the "rotation" is super-competitive. This week 95% of my playing time has gone to Viewtiful Joe and Super Metroid, two games out of 20 or so I've picked up in the last few weeks. Before I started with those two I was in the middle of Jedi Starfighter, R-Type Final, and Resident Evil 3. I don't have enough time to play a "great" games to its completion, much less spend a significant amount of time on a game that's merely "good".

It's the price you pay for having a nice big collection. When I first got my Playstation I would spend weeks playing just one game because I would only purchase one or two games a month.

I'd say that I have a good couple hundred games that I haven't played at all other than the test them out or play for a few minutes. I'm at around 700 games total right now, and I get them in much faster than I have time to play them all! :D

Right now I have about 50 nes games I have just popped in and tested for a second, but havent played them. :( I have about 30 psx games unplayed.
40 genesis games unplayed , 10 snes , too many atari to remember :embarrassed: about 5 DC ..... @_@ Now I have depressed myself :P I guess I need to start playing a bit more :D I wont be posting for about a year guys :o (kidding) :P I know I have a few more games I havent played , but I dont want to make myself sick.

I've easily got 300-400 unplayed games. I dont have the time, and I buy them at a rate about 20times faster than I could hope to play them.

Good topic!

I've probably got about 100 games now that I haven't played. I got to collecting games for the Dreamcast, and I haven't had time to sit and play them all, although I want too.

When I realized my backlog was getting so big, I made a list in Excel of what games I had, how badly I wanted to play them and then what I thought of them after I did play them. This way, I figure that I can play them all and remember which ones I really enjoyed!

There aren't very many games I haven't played whatsoever. Most of those games were bought by my boyfriend, so while he's played them, I haven't yet. As for games that I've only tried out... hundreds, most definitely. I play through games pretty slowly, and sometimes I'm not playing much of anything. I was playing Baten Kaitos back in December and January, and after that I hadn't played much of anything seriously up until the last couple days when I started really playing Valkyrie Profile. It's about time too. I can hardly call myself the "tri-Ace Super Fan" without whoring Valkyrie Profile, which has been sitting around since 2000 virtually unplayed by me... Sad thing is, my boyfriend has played the hell out of it since then. :/ I'm finally catching up to him. I think my biggest problem is that I keep buying so many imports, and the more imports I buy, the more games I discover that have no FAQs, so I start writing one (or form plans to), and that totally bogs down my game playing... I still love writing FAQs, though, so I won't stop any time soon.

There isn't a game in my collection that I haven't played at all, but there are probably well over a hundred that are unfinished.

I've only within the last year picked up the joystick again. I was a hardcore gamer in high school (nes, genny, snes, tg16), then I stopped in college ( i graduated from college in 2000). In college my entire genny tg16 and gamegear collection was stolen by my uncle who sold them for drugs. he probably got like 2 buxs for the hundreds of carts and systems. last year, on whim, i decided to buy a gamecube. recently ive acquired a dreamcast, n64, and gameboy advance sp. my problem is that i've been buying games like a maniac and wind up only playing them for about 10 minutes each. i live paycheck to paycheck (nyc is expensive) and when i need money i often sell my games back to gamestop. ugh. so i've had games ive paid 30-50 bux that i've only played for like 10 minutes upon opening... then sell them. ugh. mostly i only sell back gamecube games since that is pretty much all they buy back anyway. i want to build up my dreamcast collection... i only have three right now, chicken run (i played it like 10 minutes.. not so good but it was only 7 bux), sega smash pack.. played that the most, and IllBleed... which im sooooo mad about... it was brand new for only 10 bux.. i was SO wanting to play that game cuz i love horror movies. the game doesnt load. i checked my dreamcast model and it was made in november of 99 so it was an earlier one. i wonder if that is why it doesnt load. the game is in mint condition. it did however load only once. i played for a bit, but it doesnt load again. the dreamcast, though used and old, is in good condition and loads the other two games with no problem... sorry im going off on a tangent, but do older dreamcasts not play the newer games? illbleed was a late release. i want to get Kiss nightmarechild but im afraid it wont work either. i guess i could return it though. i lost the receipt for illbleed.

anyway sorry about that rant. :) ive been a lurker for a while and decided to register today. i like the discussions on this board a lot, and you guys have really got me back into gaming.

Yeah, same here. It's bad. I was on top of it when I was doing NES, but now, forget it. So many NES and Genesis I want to sit down and soak through.

Last game I played was last night and today... Ufouria on NES. Absolutely a great game.

I'm mostly a NES gamer, and I've got a backlog of about 50 of them waiting to be played. Other than that, 5 SMS and a handful of SNES and TG16.

I must have at least 100 games I've never played. When I started collecting again a few years ago I quickly snatched up all the RPGs for the SNES, NES, and PS1, only to find that I didn't have the thousands of hours it would take to finish them all. I've been working my way slowly through them, but I know that there are some I'll probably never get to. Games like Brain Lord that weren't wonderful just don't grab my attention like Final Fantasy 3. Perhaps when I'm too broke I'll finally get around to them, but for now they keep getting buried deeper and deeper in the backlog.

oh god, can't even begin to count... just in the last week I finally cracked open Disgaea and have been going through that... man that's an addictive game. I think I've spent 17 hours in the last four days on it, which is a lot for me.

Still, with my fighter binge the percentage has gone down, as I can beat a fighter in half an hour until I decide which ones I want to sit down and try to master.

I'd put it at around 70-80 I still need to play, which will go up when I get a couple packages in...

You know what, I was about to do a thread on this very topic. You see I have been getting SO many games lately and haven't really even begun to play them. For the past 3 weekend, Fri. and Sat. nights, me and my girlfriend have been going to various Toys, R Us, Circuit City, Best Buy's, etc. in the area finding closeout deals on new Gamecube games, and a few GB Advance games as well.

Over the past 3 weekends, I have aquired about 30 brand new GC games. I am just finding so many deals. I mean I didn't give a shit about Hitman, Beyond Good + Evil, Timesplitters 2 when they were all $50 at release time. But when they are only $15 brand new now, I jumped ALL OVER those AWSEOME games!
Plus there was a 50% off sale this weekend at a local game store and picked up about 10 N64 games.

I would say in total I have about 40-45 unplayed games as of now.

Lately I always try to finish any game I get before buying a new one. I can't stand leaving anything unbeaten. But if I can't beat a game, I sell it and never admit to having played it.

last time I check when I found box full of titles I collected in my unit time but forgot all about I have below titles on my collection. Unfortunately with new baby I don't have time to play at all!

SS - 300+
DC - 100+
PCE - 90+
XB - 75+
GC - 11
GBA - 3
WS - 2
PS - 105+

bit of shame as I couldn't even spare ten minutes to play... and my collection is getting bigger each time relative in Japan send another shipment...

cheers

Ugh, it's hard to tell.

I consider a game in my backlog if I haven't beaten it. Puts a whole lot of games in my backlog.

I started to force myself to not buy any new games unless I beat a game first. But then I went out this weekend to yard sales and whatnot, and bought about 20 games, so that plan got shot to pieces. I can't pass up great deals.

I just feel bad for having such a huge backlog though. It's just a lot of money to spend for games to sit there unopened until I get around to playing them.

Easily 70+ unplayed games here.

By unplayed, I mean I haven't really sat down and played the game. I may have played it for 20 minutes or so, but that's all. Most of my unplayed games haven't even been played for 5 minutes, and some are still shrink wrapped.

It's been very hard lately, my home got flooded in the beginning of January, I was living in a hotel without my games until late march, and I just moved out of that place a few weeks ago, so I've had even less time than normal to do any gaming. Add to that a relationship, and a 11+ hour a day job, and I'm not afforded much play time. I'm hoping that one day, I'll have all the time in the world, and all I'll do is game from surise to sunset...

Oh yeah, I remember that. Maybe the shrinkwrap helped keep some of your games clean? :P (gotta look on the bright/dry side, heh, I remember you saying you threw stuff into ziplock baggies)

Right here I'm looking at...aaah...lots of games I haven't played much. Easily over a hundred, not sure how many of those are not shrinkwrapped. I'm pretty much refusing to emulate stuff right now that I haven't played on a real system yet, with only some exceptions. I try not to pick up stuff I'm not interested in, but it's hard with much of the stuff I pick up at thrifts when you know you've got a chance at getting a "good deal"; I haven't played any of my NES titles as I'm reluctant to set up the toaster I bought a while ago. Stuff like that.

Some stuff is OK but not a personal favorite; i.e. I picked up a Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back but the first platforming level feels a lot looser than I remember Super Star Wars being :/ So that was maybe a 15 minute play. I really only have time for original, very good or simply interesting games. Life's too short for me to be playing some of my CD-i stuff, for example :P

Add to this that I've got a good Unreal Tournament 2K4 file going, bought a Mac which I'm working on upgrading and finding games for, and I think my priorities are pretty much set for the next few months.

I'm surprised so many people responded to this topic. Ironically, I think I spend more time posting on Digital Press about games than I do playing them!

I guess buying is a serious habit that's hard to break. People who don't collect games don't understand that. If I see a really good deal, I just want to spend, spend, SPEND!

Like right now, I want to get a $15 copy of F-Zero GX from Circuit City, but I have at least 4 Cube games that haven't been opened and at least 6 that haven't been played more than a few minutes (Metroid Prime and Zelda: Wind Waker among them because adventure games anger me). So, maybe by the end of the week. Plus, my dough is getting low.

I'm with you on this one. There are so many games I've purchased that I want to play, yet there is always something keeping me from doing so, be it an unexpected game (like NBA Ballers) that I get sucked into, or if real life interferes with my gaming plans.

Unfortunately I'm the same way. It really annoys me how many great games I have sitting around collecting dust. I just can't seem to find the time to play as much as I'd like. It's also the main thing I hate about modern games. They take so damn long to get into. Back in the good old Atari days you plugged in a cart and bam you were playing. Today it takes so long just to figure out how to use the controller... But that's another topic.

Another thing that annoys me is that when I finally do have some time to play I have so many games that I can't decide which one to play! I spend so much time looking through my games and systems trying to figure out what to play I just give up and end up playing nothing....

Now that I think about it, I spend more time foruming myself, I believe there was a topic somewhat recently that asked that very question. But I'm usually at work when I'm here on DP, no game playing at work. ;)

Yeah, at one point, I thought Oobgarm was in some sort of contest with me to see how many posts we could do per day. I think we were neck and neck last winter. After a while, I said "Where does this guy find all the time to post?" Finally, I gave up on getting all the fruits...
