I've always been a fan of the Streets of Rage series, but it wasn't the first, the last, or the best to everyone.

What was your favorite in that genre?

For a list of games in the genre, click this link:

Way too many fun games to list, the ones that instantly come to mind are the double dragon series, battletoads, final fight series, teenage mutant ninja tutles. A couple that I have really enjoyed are Knights of the Round and Saturday Night Slam Masters (beat'em up/wrestling game!)

Double Dragon. Both NES and Arcade iterations. DD was the ONE game that everyone crowded at the local arcade. I was never good at it, but I loved to try. The NES port of Double Dragon was one of my first realizations that Arcade ports aren't as good, but the game was actually pretty fun in it's own way. The new GBA game is sweet, but can't quite touch the original.

I also got enjoyment out of Arcade versions of Final Fight (not 2 &3), TMNT, X-Men, the Simpsons, and Sunset Riders.

It's all about Double Dragon. 8-)

Probably the very last arcade game I ever put any real amount of money in in my youth. Myself and a buddy made the local game machine operator a wealthy man with that machine. We'd bring a roll of quarters, and we eventually beat the game.

Just thinking about the game brings the theme song into my head, and it will probably be there all day.

Let's face it! If some guys come by, punch out your girlfriend, and carry her off (exposing her panties no less!!!), you're gonna want to kick some ass. Great backgrounds, rocking music, and the fun goes on and on, with a great surprise match up at the end, if you both make it that far.

That time in the arcade, my buddy got the girl, but at home with my SMS Double Dragon, she's usually mine. LOL

I love my Streets of Rage, my Double Dragon and alot more.

BUT, by far the best Beat Em Up ever HAS to be River City Rampage.

There are many games in this genre that I really enjoy but I've enjoyed Double Dragon the longest.

Arcade version, of course.

2D beat-em up? Battletoads Double Dragon on the NES. Beating up your teammate is just fun :D

I am also really liking Spiderman for the DC (also on PSX). Its more than your typical beat em up, but the core elements are still there.

Alien vs. Predator

Actually, all the cps2 beatemups are fantastic.

The best beat-em-ups of all time in the arcades, I would say Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 and 2, and the six-player X-Men!

You would always have someone around who would want to team up with you. At our local arcade, we use to fling spare quarters at the TMNT 2 machine screen. We needed as many quarters as possible to get to the end.

The entire Double Dragon series....although most of my memories were from playing Double Dragon 1 and 2 on NES.

Streets of Rage 2 is a very close second, followed by Battletoads...but that game was just so HARD!!

It's all about Double Dragon for me. If it qualifies, I'd also put Golden Axe.

Knights of the Round - I liked the medieval theme, and how your character gradually became covered in armor as you got farther and gained more experience.

What is this, attack of the beat 'em up topics?

It's a tie between Dynamite Cop on the Dreamcast and TMNT IV on the Super NES/arcade. I love the weird ass weapons on DC. Where else can you use hairspray or a fish to fight? TMNT was my favorite arcade game for a long time, but I can't get past the prehistoric stage on either version.

Dude that game is awsome!! But my all time favorite is a tie between Streets of Rage 2 and Golden Axe.

How about "Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team." Anyone remember this fine gem?

Pimple, Zitz, and Rash team up with Billy and Jimmy (AKA Hammer & Spike) for a beat-em-up adventure that was out of this world! I was hoping for a five-player arcade version by Technos at the time of its convergent release to NES, SNES, and Genesis.

Vendetta is probably my favorite beat em up. It's a lot of fun, especially if you play the uncut version.

My other favorite beat em ups in no particular order:

Streets of Rage series
TMNT
Simpsons
X Men
Captain Commando
Final Fight
River City Ransom
Double Dragon 2 (Nes)
Battle Circuit
Alien vs Predator
Ninja Baseball Batman
Spiderman (The arcade one by Sega. The game is mostly beat em up, but there are also platform segments)
Dynasty Warriors 3

I haven't really played a Beat em Up since I was a kid, but my favorite back then was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles one and The Simpsons. (:

Throw in another lotsa love shout out to Double Dragon yo :P

Golden Axe is another favorite.. but I haven't wanted to play that in a while.

I'd say Street Fighter 2 as well.. but I guess that doesn't qualify :)

Three way tie!

Double Dragon: #1 for sentimental value, #3 for overall gameplay.

Final Fight: #2 for sentimental value, #2 for overall gameplay.

Streets of Rage: #3 for sentimental value, #1 for overall gameplay.

And besides this, there are many, many, many more beat-em-ups that kick ass.

I'll take SpikeOut over all the other beat'em ups, but if it has to be 2d I'll probably go with Final Fight on Mega CD...

Sengoku 3 was disappointing.

It's RIVER CITY RANSOM, of course! (Although Rampage was good too.)

RCR is an NES game in which two high schoolers named Ryan and (second-player) Alex must fight for the honor of their school and the freedom of Ryan's girlfriend (of course). It's also one of the few beat-em-up games that successfully incorporates certain RPG elements (various power-up items, a whole slate of stats and meters to level up).

And it includes something we're all fond of - the ability of player 1 to beat the hell out of player 2, or vice versa. There are many great weapons (baseball bat, chain, brass knuckles, rocks, etc.) that make this even more fun.

If you can find it, River City Ransom is an absolute classic.

I'm also a big Streets of Rage fan - SOR2 is probably the best. Very few games beat the Simpsons arcade game, though. (It's one of the reasons I've got MAME. :) )

My best memory was from an arcade place called Starbucks when I was a kid and it was on the TMNT arcade game. Who knows how much money my grandma and dad spent on that machine for me when I was a kid. I remember some other kids would just watch me play. I would have to say that is by far my favorite beat-em-up.

If I ever try and buy an arcade machine it will probably be that one, if I could ever find it.

I had a few for the SNES when I was a kid too and I always remember playing Final Fight, so that has to be high up on the list as well.

My vote is for Final Fight. It was one of the first SNES games I ever had and can still enjoy it to this day. I even got my wife involved in beating it.

The other day we tried to go through Streets of Rage 3 on the Genny and I couldn't enjoy it as much as I used to...maybe I will try part 2 tonight.

I didn't know this topic existed; I thought I pioneered it by starting a new thread today....

Anyway, I tend to agree with your evaluation, although I must make take exception to Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder. That game is a top-notch Beat-em up if ever there was one.

The absolute worst beat-em up that I've ever played is The Bouncer, a first generation PS2 game by Square that was hella overhyped (People who got letters published in EGM praised it's 'Matrix-like action sequences' before playable copies of the game were even available).

Final Fight (1) has not aged well, in my opinion. Neither has Streets of Rage (1). Streets of Rage 2 features some of the best beat-em up action I've ever experienced. Streets of Rage 3 was disappointing to say the least, although I do enjoy its proper Japanese port (Bare Knuckle 3) to a decent degree.

Mighty Final Fight is one of the most underrated Beat-em ups that I've ever played. As is Saturday Night Slammasters / Muscle Bomber Duo, if you consider that a beat-em up in spite of its pro wrestling oriented rules.

As far as Beat-Em Ups go, I consider these to be standout titles:

The Simpsons (Arc) - dated gameplay, but awesome environments.

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs (Arc)

Aliens Vs. Predator (Arc)

Double Dragon (NES)

Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder (Arc)

Splatterhouse 3 (Gen) - What do you think of this one, Ackman?

Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom (Arc)

Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara (Arc)

Actually it is pretty damn good ah the list isn't set in stone. I mean 4 player Golden Axe that is really cool, I just like GA1 more because of certain gameplay features but 2 is top notch.

The absolute worst beat-em up that I've ever played is The Bouncer Allot of ppl seem to like this game I don't know why? Brain damage simulator?

Final Fight (1) has not aged well Ah the cult classic, still good.

Streets of Rage (1) That has aged terribly imo

Mighty Final Fight is one of the most underrated Beat-em ups that I've ever played.
I can't get into it It seems good but not outstanding or anything I might be wrong.

As is Saturday Night Slammasters / Muscle Bomber Duo, if you consider that a beat-em up in spite of its pro wrestling oriented rules.

well one of them does have haggar in it? But more of a co up fighter or party fighter....

The Simpsons (Arc) - dated gameplay, but awesome environments.

quite a cult classic... It's good

Double Dragon (NES)
quite a difficult game I like dd2 NES much, much better

Splatterhouse 3 (Gen) - What do you think of this one, Ackman?

It would have been better if it was just a straightforward beat em up... The maze aspect really got the game down but a good effort from namco.

[Splatterhouse 3] would have been better if it was just a straightforward beat em up... The maze aspect really got the game down but a good effort from namco.

I disagree. The less-linear maze orientation to SH3 is what makes it an outstanding beat-em up. I consider the maze aspect a feature rather than a liability; SH3 needed to distinguish itself from the rest of the heap, considering the fact that it lacked multiplay, evasive maneuvres, and dash attacks (when you double tap the d-pad in a direction, attacking while dashing results a special dash attack).

Casting another vote for River City Ransom. Some other killer ones are:

-Final Fight CD
-Streets of Rage 2 (never really liked 1 all that much)
-TMNT arcade
-X-Men arcade
-TMNT IV: Turtles in time

You know, I just bought Mighty Final Fight not too long ago and I can’t stand it. Each guy takes way too long to kill and it seems like your just standing there punching fro ours straight with no end.

Splatterhouse is not a beat-em up, unless you're talking about SH3 (but I don't think you are, since you cited SH as an arcade game, and there has never been a beat-em up Splatterhouse coin-op)

Best ever?
Guardian Heroes, Treasure at their finest. I couldn't believe how good this was when I picked it up. Non-Stop playing for like a week straight, and the multiplayer was incredible. It was always a hoot having a random character and getting Kanon, and anyone else playing getting one of the crappy civilians!

Loved RCR aswell, never managed to finish it but I've still logged a few hours into it. Other ones I loved were Golden Axe, Double Dragon, Battletoads (Can never beat the 5th segment of the speeder bikes though) and TMNT.

fantastic graphics and gameplay just wish it was a bit longer I don't know why konami never ever made a homeport?

prolly the most LOL beat em up you'll ever play?
IMO this game is probably a lot better than SOR in certain ways... too bad they took out the ability to beat your friends up otherwise this game would have been perfect.
