Techincally its 1 (ONE).

**To make this slightly easier to explain, I will give you my XBL name and describe from there**
When you register for XBL, you give yourself A handle (nickname, whatever), I am PapaStu. I will allways be known by PapaStu by XBox for XBL (XBox Live) from now on.

However
Some games allow for mutiple profiles (I have 2 for Unreal, had a few for Mech Assault, Rainbow Six 3 ect ect, remember these are different profiles within the game, so in essesence its like you started a different game for each character name). So say that your gonna play Unreal with me, you look at the dashboard and see that PapaStu is on, and join my game. But you dont see PapaStu in the game cause my character name is BeefStu. Should you add me to your buddylist you will add PapaStu (as it will not show that a BeefStu is actually online.) All stats are recorded to your Handle name (in my case PapaStu) so when you look up rankings and the like, it credits the XBL acct, not a character name.

If you need further detailing I can try again.

Steve

thanks for the explaination but my question was how long can my handle get? # of characters in the sense of # of letters.

I have no clue how I missed that part... LOL

I went through the XBox site, and didnt see a thing about number of characters used. They had an example name (and were talking about how you cant change the acct name, once registering) and it had 12 characters. So you can at least do (youruglyclon).
