Watching some late night news on Tv I noticed that they are going to start putting ads for the new spiderman movie on the baseball plates as a way to generate more interest and money for the film. Then I was watching another morning show and they were talking about how many consumer groups have said that Tv is dying being replaced with Video game consoles and Dvd players they basically said that in the future video game companies will start to plug and make money from companies wanting to advertize in thier games just like a Tv network charging for commercials.
I dont know if Some game companies have already started to plug products in games but I was told one of the need for speed games has done so already. To some I dont think this is a big deal but I for one would not like to see the future of video games become a huge way to market products like womens summers eve or diapers or whatever the case may be.
What do you guys think about this?
Thanks

It's hardly a new phenomenon - 7-Up was all over Cool Spot, and Chupa-Chups were in Zool, both over a decade ago. I'm sure there's dozens of other examples aswell.

Well I do Remember Cool Spot but I think It was just a Fad for the time as that spot character was everywhere on Tv at that time so they were just trying to cash in on the moment I would imagine , do you remember the noid from pizza hut he had his own nes game. Im sure there are other games out there with ads but I just worry about it being overdone and ads being in every frickin game made from here on out. I hope that never happens.

You never know with those scooby Doo Games I would not be a bit surprized to see some purina dog chow ad in there soon.

The ads on the bases idea was nixed. The ads will be limited to signs in the stadium and trailers playing on the giant video screens.
Yes, some games already have ads. The Tony Hawk games have ads for Nokia, and the latest (Underground) has McDonald's. Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure won an award for the worst product placement from GameSpot by showcasing a cell phone right down to the model number. The Bond games feature licensed cars.

We've already seen it time and time again, even if you aren't picking up on it.
I don't think it will ever get to the point that they're advertising Summer's Eve or diapers or anything like that, but newtechnology and things that can be tied in to the game itself will always be advertised.

Seen them but I don't pay much attention to them. To me it adds to some the depth and realism of said games.

He's talking about Chase the Chuckwagon, a rare Atari 2600 game from Purina corp.
But yeah, Disneys Extreme Skate Adventure had horrible plugs, so much that I almost got up and turned my system off.
Actually, Activiision whores out ads for all of their games in their games. (Tony Hawk in Spiderman, etc etc)

Any Seasoned played of W1P30UT XL would recall that RED BULL was all over that game. That was back in 1996 too, way before it became popular in the States. I remember thinking that I had stumbled upon the coolest drink when I finally found RED BULL after seeing all the ads all over that game.
I dont mind if there are ads in games as long as A) it's placed well (the logos fit with the overall ambiance of the game, like the RED BULL logo did. B.)The Product makes sense and fits with the game. Wipeout was all about good beats and trippy tracks - catering rave culture and club kids, It only made sense. And even in the game, if you were a racer on those kinds of tracks, you bet your ass you'd be drinking an assload of Red Bull. I think it also helps that I drink that stuff like coffee.
As far as virtual billboards go, I think they dont bother me as much. Anyone remember the Megaman Billboard in the back of the Final Battle in the NES game Mighty Final Fight? But if, say you HAVE to sit through an advert before you play a level, well then at that point, someone is gonna lose a testicle (or ovary).

Beach Spikers had the Pringles, Holiday Inn, etc. Stadiums.

Don't forget the "Dole" bananas in the Super Monkey Ball games.
Does that bother me? Nope. I'll only worry about ads in games when they affect the product itself. Like, say, toning down Grand Theft Auto just so Wal-Mart will be a sponsor. And I don't think that would happen - a game like GTA would be able to find plenty of other sponsors willing to provide their logo without restrictions I'd bet (well, maybe not *no* restrictions, but not ones that would affect the game).

Yep! I remember that...it was beyond obvious how BAD this advertisement was in there. Also there was a McDonalds in there and you had to make deliveries of "Supersize fries" and "Big macs". Other than this crap the game was excellent!

Didn't Ridge Racer have a bunch of NAMCO related ads in it? Actually, I suppose a lot of racing games do this, just because billboards are easy to put into racing games and add a sense of speed when they come whizzing by.
Pole Position had Centipede and Atari ones that I can remember. It seems like Super Hang-On had some billboards too. Can anyone else remember any other racing games with ads in them?

The ads don't bother me much as it is right now, but when you have to watch a commercial in load time ... or beat a stage get a commercial ... yeah that would piss me off.

There's a car commercial (I don't know or care what brand) that uses footage from some XBOX game, too.

Women's Summer's Eve? Good thing you pointed that out, or I might have thought it was the men's version of the product. LOL
Seriously, though... didn't some douche come in here a few months ago to gauge our reactions to advertising in video games? He represented a firm which intended to add commercials to popular video games. I'm not sure how successful they've been so far, but I'm sure Acclaim would be open to the idea. They'd certainly be sleazy and desperate enough for it.

I know that they had KFC, and i think they had Levi's too.
Talking about Red Bull, dont forget Bawls, making a HUGE apperance in Run Like Hell.
What I have liked is the genuine lack of Ads in most of the modern sports games. EA doesnt throw ad after ad into their games, unlike real life. Your there to play the game, not buy the shit. Though they do whore themselves out for the modern music.

Oh, don't worry. Summers' Eve makes me feel fine.
Anyway, I thought this thread was done? Or was that AA? No matter.
I don't mind as long as it doesn't become obtrusive. Only make use of idle time but don't make it impassable if they have to put them in. And don't get too far carried away.
