Y'know, it occurs to me that in my near 29 years on this planet, I've had rather few encouters with barrels. I think I saw one collecting rainwater once, and I've seen a few used as receptacles in departments stores (and some filled with peanuts at a darn fine steak house), but otherwise they turn up rather infrequently. But in video games, they seem to be all over the place.

Donkey Kong is all about barrels. A little known fact: when barrels catch on fire, they develop intelligence.

In the Doom series, you get to experience the joys of explosive green barrels! Who can forget the "Barrels 'O Fun" level of Doom 2?

In Kid Icarus the Barrel lets you carry around 8 heath potion bottles.

In Double Dragon, you can toss a heavy barrel (actually more of an oil drum) into people.

Ironically, I'm pretty sure the arcade game Heavy Barrel has no barrels in it. (Yeah, gun barrels, I know).

I know there are some beat'em-ups where you can bust open barrels to get power-ups. Isn't there also some platformer where you float in a barrel too?

Can anybody come up with more barrel games? I have no idea why I thought of this, but now I gots ta know!

Super Mario RPG has barrel-riding and an omage to DK.

I think Secret of Evermore has barrels in the town where you fight a giant rat...

Final Fight has barrels you destroy...

In breath of fire 3, the blitz attack lets you shoot barrels at your enemies. I think there was a barrel in conker's bad fur day, too. And In suikoden 2, gadget is a robot shaped like a barrel.

Y'know, this has nothing to do with games, but just today, actually just before I got here and logged on to the boards, I had to roll a barrel of horse feed uphill.

I am glad it didn't catch on fire, though, I woulda been in trouble. X_x

In Road Trip for PS2, there's a car that rolls barrels down a hill inside a cave at you. Lots of barrels in the Crash Bandicoot games too!

Oui and there is also one in Suikoden 3. Gadget Z. You had to bring Belle a screw in order to recruit her and Gadget Z.

FYI, both Gadget from Suiko2 and Gadget Z from Suiko3 share the Chisyun star, which Juppo in the original Suiko claimed.

Eep, which reminds me, the evil barrels in Time Crisis 2. *shudders*

There are barrels in Champions of Norrath in one of the parts, you can bust 'em open to check for goodies and gold.

It's not just Champions of Norrath, but pretty much EVERY RPG / dungeon crawl has some barrels in one part or another. You can rest assured that someone has thoughtfully placed a health potion or a few gold coins in some of them if you break them open or go up to them and search them.

hehe its a law that every shooter have barrels and they always, always must be explosive! wooden crates are also required although they may or may not be explosive and may contain ammo or health paks. i always imagined there was some memo that came down from nazi HQ to all secret bases.

In Serious Sam Next encounter there are barrels that lead to secrets.

Recently I was forced to ride barrels in a MD game Talmit's Adventure to get over a knee-deep pond. (Talmit is a bit water-shy like most characters back then)

In Tazmania Taz drinks water from barrels. Sonic Adventure 2 has barrels but you don't use them for anything.
