Other than icebrkr, who are our other CD32 people? I finally scored one of these on eBay. Probably paid too much, but NTSC ones are getting harder and harder to find it seems and I've been searching for one for almost a year now and I kind of just got tired of waiting.

What are some recommended games for the CD32? I'm a fan of platformers and puzzle games, not so much RPG's and Strategy based games.

(Raises hand)

I got one earlier in the year. Joe hooked me up with some games (thanks a ton again!) and you can see my thoughts on what I own on the review page.

Anyway, don't expect anything amazing graphically from the system and you'll do fine.

maybe robotriot? He really seems to be into the CD32. Wish I could score one of those, bunch of great lookin titles for it.

Heh, yes I am ;)

Platformers I can recommend are of course the excellent Flink (which is one of the few CD32 games that isn't a port of a normal Amiga version), Marvin's Marvellous Adventure, Fire & Ice and Kid Chaos. There's quite a lot of platforms available for the CD32 though.

I think there aren't that many puzzle games, the ones I can think of right now are Vital Light (the best one of the 4 I guess), Clockwiser, Mean Arenas and Emerald Mines, but I'm not much of a fan of this genre anyway.

Other games I'd recommend would be Banshee (vertical shmup), Disposable Hero (horizontal shmup), All Terrain Racing, Speedball 2, The Chaos Engine (you probably know these two already :), Project-X (vertical shmup), Super Stardust (Asteroids clone), Overkill (Defenderish), D/Generation (action adventure), Universe, Darkseed, Simon the Sorcerer (all adventures) and Roadkill (racing w/ weapons).

Good luck scoring one. I've been looking for one religiously since OKGE last year and just now managed to get one. In the last year I've only seen around 5 or 6 NTSC CD32's on eBay (I may have missed some, of course). Remember that all the Australian and European ones are PAL. Most of the ones I've seen coming from Canada are PAL too, for some reason.

Btw, you should be able to switch between NSTC and PAL by connecting an Amiga mouse to port 2 and keeping both mousebuttons pressed before switching the machine on/pressing the reset button.

I'm not over-familiar with the CD32 , but I can certainly second the recommendation of the above titles.
In particular, the CD32 version of Speedball 2 is [i]the finest incarnation of one of the all-time classics (just ask any Amiga owner :) ), and craps all over the awful PSX 'remake'.

If you're looking for platformers you picked the right console! The CD32 has a ton. There are some losers of course but there are a lot of winners too such as the ones robotriot mentioned. I'm particularly fond of Out to Lunch. Benefactor is a great game that combines elements of both platform and puzzle genres, as is Sleepwalker. If you like Lemmings you should check out Gulp too. One platformer that I've always wanted to try out is Base Jumpers. It looks like a lot of fun and can supposedly be played by up to 4 people at once.

For pure puzzle games, there's not much. I've played Vital Light and if that's the best the system has to offer that's too bad.

I'm sure this is a common CD32 newbie question, but I'll ask anyway. Is there a way to play normal Amiga games on the CD32?

Searching for CD32 games on the web I've found a couple of places with ISO's to download. Did the CD32 not have any copy protection whatsoever? How odd. I guess it's from a time before CD burners were common place?

It looks like games only go for a buck or two on eBay, so I'll probably go that route.

Boy, I'm already hooked on this thing and I haven't even received it yet!

Afaik, there are user-made ISO compilations of Amiga games on the net which you can use with a normal CD32. Some Amiga games can be burnt to CD (you need to make the CD bootable though which isn't that easy to accomplish) and run on a CD32. Lots of older ECS games won't work though and also not all AGA games, only those for unexpanded A1200s should work without problems. The third possibility is to upgrade the CD32 for example with an SX32 expansion which basically turns it into a 'real' computer, with floppy and diskdrive.

There's no hardware copy protection on any game I know of. Games like Worms and Alien Breed 3D have the code table from the floppy versions though. And yes, CD32 games were made from 1993 to ~1996, so CD burners weren't very common at that time :)

http://eager.back2roots.org/ will tell you which Amiga games will work on an unexpanded CD32.
