View Full Version : Castlevania collectors, what is this worth?

I hardly ever ask for appraisals, but I'm stumped on this one. Today I picked up a complete Castlevania PC game today from a thrift. Comes on a 3.5" disk. It's the original Castlevania game from the NES and put out by Konami. In fact the box art looks exactly like the NES version.

I've never seen this version before and can't find any info about it online. Anyone here know what they usually sell for? They also had an original Metal Gear PC game at the thrift too, but I passed on it.

I remember seeing that in the stores -- along with the C64 version of the game (and I think there was one for the Atari as well).

I can't imagine it being worth much, though, unless a Castlevania collector wants to get their hands on it. Probaly no more then $10.

I never knew Metal Gear was ported to the PC, though. I DID buy Contra and Super C for the PC, though.

It's worth whatever someone will pay you for it.

??!???!? O_O

Not to brag, but I'm one of this board's resident Castlevania buffs, and even I haven't heard of this! Could be a bootleg... I have no idea. I cannot help you. I have failed. :(

I also guarantee this is legitimate. I bought one at Radio Shack (for $7, IIRC) years ago, and I still have it. In fact, I'm looking at my copy right now. The disks have a 1990 copyright.

The back of the box shows screens for "Commodore" (meaning C64/128), Amiga, and IBM (Atari is not listed though). My box says it's the C64/128 version, but it's really the IBM version because I used to play it on an IBM clone. It came on two 5.25" floppies. The game uses a funky copy protection scheme. Red passwords are printed on a red sheet in the middle of the manual. You can't read the passwords with the naked eye; you have to look through a piece of red cellophane that was included in the box. Unfortunately, I lent my copy to my cousin once and the cellophane is missing. :(

IIRC, it looks and plays almost identically to the NES version, but the music from the Frankenstein level plays on the Grim Reaper level and vice versa. Music is AdLib-quality, meaning not particulary good. The NES version plays smoother and is just better overall.

As for value, I have no idea. These seem to be awfully obscure.

BTW, there are screenshots and music downloads for the C64 version on http://www.lemon64.com/

Both Konami and Capcom have had very limited releases of some of their games - of varying quality, too. Sometimes (like in this case) the music is worse...on Mega Man X and X3 for the PC, the music is actually better (especially when you can install different soundfonts and whatnot).

They're generally rare and hard-to-find, but I'm not sure how badly people actually want them, so it's tough to say how much they're worth.

I would guess about $10.00 to $15.00.

They briefly talk about the PC, Amiga and C64 version over at the Castlevania Dungeon.. however, no prices are listed.. check it out:

My friend actually had this when we were kids. I am going to see him this Saturday at a grad party for another friend. Maybe I will ask him if he still has it! Hopefully he does and would be willing to give it to me :)

I think it's the IBM version that's rarest, but I'm not sure. Heck if I know. I've got an unopened Super C in the same style (bought it this year off eBay, not too expensive) myself.

The Amiga CV is wildly different in the graphics department; the sound is pretty horrible and the controls... LOL Well, let's put it this way, when I hear that Simon sometimes gets up after he's DIED and starts walking around by himself you know the game's comedy gold. A guy at the CVD Forums/CV Corner Forums by the name of Morgoth Galaxius figures that one's the hardest of them all to one-life.

I'm guessing most of these titles have the up-arrow jump as well, which should make using the special weapons really fun.

Hold on, I'm making a topic about it:

The version I have is actually the IBM version. It says "IBM PC/Tandy 1000 & 100% IBM Compatibles" on the front, so technically that is the PC version, right?

I'm gonna be putting this up on Ebay tonight with a pic or two. I'll post the link here if you guys would like to check it out.

Sounds like the IBM version, yes.

As for eBay...I'd throw $30 at it :P

I was gonna say $10-20, but let us know if you sell it. I'd put up a bid.

Oh, and I think I vaguely remember hearing about this...

Strange... I was always under the impression that the Amiga version was an entirely new game (or at least, an old-school Castlevania-style new game where the plot is the same but the stages and everything are different). I guess the redrawn graphics confused me. I kind of wish I had it just for the novelty of it. Drac looks like an insane chicken demon, and Frankenstein's stage has five-legged camels in the background. :) Can't get fruitier than that.
