I got my mom a Gameboy SP with a few games for Mother's Day which I gave to her yesterday. About two hours later I get the following call at work:

Mom: "I can't get this to work."
Me: "Why? What's it doing?"
Mom: "I keep pushing the START button and nothing's happening."
Me: "What's on the screen?"
Mom: "Nothing, it's dark."
Me: "Did you put a cartridge in?"
Mom: "I tried but it won't fit."
Me: "What do you mean it won't fit?"
Mom: "It won't fit, I keep trying to shove it in there but it won't go."
Me: "What are you looking at right now?"
Mom: "I have it opened and I'm looking at the screen."
Me: "Ok, take the cart and put it in the big long hole at the bottom."
Mom: "I did but it won't fit!"
Me: "Is the label facing you or facing the floor?"
Mom: "Facing me."
Me: "Turn it around so it faces the floor and try it again."
Mom: "It still won't fit."
Me (confused): "It won't fit?"
Mom: "No, it won't fit."
Me: "Does it go in a little ways then get stuck? How far does it go in?"
Mom: "It doesn't go in at all."
Me: "Mom, look at the cart. See how it's open at the bottom? Put THAT SIDE into the Gameboy with the label facing the floor."
Mom: "Oh ok, there we go!" (few seconds pass) "Nothing's happening."
Me: "Is there a picture?"
Mom: "No, there's nothing...I push START and nothing's happening."
Me: "Did you turn it on?"
Mom: "Oh." (few seconds pass) "Still nothing."
Me: "Did you put batteries in it?"
* dead silence *
Mom: "Uh, I'll call you back."

:frustrated:

Does you mom even play games? Sounds like she doesn't.

LOL , Don't worry though, I have to go through the same thing with my mom and the television remote whenever they send a new one from Dish Network....*tv blaringly loud* mom yells "HOW DO I TURN THIS THING DOWN!"

heh, parents and electronics don't always mix very well. All that new-fangled technology stuff can sometimes confuse them. My mom is constantly asking me why I have "so many Nintendos" because they all "do the same thing". :)

I have people call me at work all the time and say their computer is broken because nothing is on the screen and how are they supposed to work if we can't provide a working machine.. I ask if everything is turned on and 99% of the time either the computer itself or the monitor isn't turned on.

My thoughts exactly. Perhaps a better question would have been IF SHE TURNED IT ON!!!

It's pretty obvious to me that your mom is simply confusing the start button with the on/off switch.

That is classic!

Sounds like every time my mom used to call with computer problems. Now she does pretty well on her own, she still is a little confused from time to time.

Maybe Kris meant to say that she gave her mom a regular GBA?

Kris's mum is a laugh, and I genuinely like her. I suggested Kris get a copy of Kuri Kuri Kururin when she was over here (as it hasn't been released in the US) and she ended up letting her mum play it. Apparently she kept having a go, complaining it was too hard, putting it down, then picking it back up for another go five minutes later LOL

My mom got one of those pop-ups that said, "MP3's have been detected on your computer and your IP has been reported ... now please download our anti spyware software."

Instead, she deleted all her MP3's, her software, and a bunch of DLL's just for good measure. At least, this is the story she told me as I was reloading her computer ...

Sounds like not only was she confusing the start button for the power switch but she hasn't charged it up yet. I'm she'll get the hang of it.

Hope you got her Tetris. (:

I usually get my mom something useful for mother's day like a mop or a broom.

My family is definitely electronics challenged, this situation reminds me of 4 days ago when i was talking to my sister :

me: here's that N64 you wanted, it should work, and everything comes with it
sister: THANKS!!!

10 minutes later

sister: uhhh why wont anything come on the screen?
me: is it hooked up right?
sister: I think so
me: mmm its hooked up alright
sister: can you open it or something? maybe it IS broke, you jerk you gave me a broke system
me : ::looks around:: you moron, plugging it in is half the battle :: rolls eyes and walks out ::
sister: smart ass

In my case, both my parents are tech-saavy, so there's never any kind of story like that. Too bad they don't care about videogames, though!

Heh, that reminds me of a story...

The computer that I use has multiple users on it. Basically, one for every member of the family. For a while, the wallpaper on my user account was the "blue screen of death". Whenver my mother or my sister turned on the monitor while it was on my account, they'd restart the computer. LOL

My family is so technologically advanced... I had to teach my dad how to set up a Dell Computer.... he didnt understand the concept of the colour coding on all the wries and plugs..... and he bought a new stereo system/surround sound system, and he called me up while I was at University to have me talk him through thte setup... andI had never even seen the monster before..... But that is nothing comparted to my mother, who once called me to talk her through setting up her VCR so she could watcha movie.

That said.... I think I might be the only one in the family who knows how to reset the clocks in the house, or to reprogram the TV when the power geos out and it resets itself. What the hell is gonna happen when I move out for good???

The closest person to being savvy when it comes to electronics is my sister, who can at least type fast, hook up a computer, and setup her N64 without the aid of a phone call or instruction manual, other than that, they are all hopeless

I feel kind of odd reading this thread since my mother has a degree in electronics and is a shareware game developer. I always knew we were an odd family. LOL
