It seems to me that those that are quick to dismiss a game like this are those who enjoy bashing the franchise. I hate to tell you, but the franchise is big, regardless of your feelings towards the latter two movies.
Just because a franchise is big doesn't necessarily mean that it is quality.
And Sega is a very competant games maker who, in my opinion, can really use a big name like The Matrix and do something special. For the actual fans of the movies as well as for themselves.
I agree, but note that Sega the "games maker" is not making this game - they're just co-publishing it.

Who s*it in everybody's cornflakes?
I hardly think Sega is to blame for a rumour. If you heard the rumour and are 'disappointed' about the actual announcement that's unfortunate, but blaming Sega seems misguided. Blame the press.
Nope, blame SEGA's PR firm for issuing a press release email in which it was breathlessly stated...
Mark your calendars for a "mystery briefing" event in SEGA of America's E3 Room. This is your opportunity to hear the latest 2004 title announcements from company executives in addition to some explosive news -- something even YOU won't be able to guess!
WHAT: Explosive Announcement Event
WHEN: Wednesday, May 12, 2004 from 10:00-10:30 a.m.
WHERE: SEGA Room - Concourse Hall #151 (between the West and South Halls)
WHY: To learn about SEGA's 2004 line-up and hear BIG news you'd NEVER guess...
What did "the press" do that superceded SEGA's own hype?
I *love* the people who immediately chimed in with "this is gonna fail miserably." Shouldn't you actually *see* a product before you take your fanboy stance?
The Matrix is a damaged franchise, the sequels having made money but pissed off many of the hardcore fans who'd be likely to pay $15 a month for the game. MMORPGs are an ailing genre, with several high-profile failures in the past year. It's certainly not unreasonable to predict that The Matrix Online is going to flop. Ubisoft certainly thought it would, which is why it dropped the game from its publishing schedule.

I agree -- Sega pumped that bullshit up bigtime. Is it a big announcement? Yes. Is it an announcement we wouldn't believe? Yes -- but not for the reasons Sega things.
Anyways, one good thing they did, is added the PSU E3 promo movie to the official site for everyone's viewing pleasure.

I agree -- Sega pumped that bullshit up bigtime.
By issuing a single, short press release in advance of E3, like just about every other company in the games industry also would?
