View Full Version : 700 Pounds of arcade holy grail!!

I can finally chalk off one more game on my list of holy grails. I had pretty much given up on getting one of these due to the current prices they are commanding on ebay. It's hard to pay upwards of $1500 for a single game, even if it is as cool as this one. But when one was offered to me at a more reasonable price, I jumped on it!
http://www.fuzzyphotos.com/cm/thumbnails.php?album=66
Works all the way and is almost 100% complete. Missing a few oddball pieces here and there, but nothing I won't find at some point. Took me 15 hours of drive time to bring it home, but it's safely tucked away in my garage, awaiting restoration.
The best part of the whole deal... I only paid $450 for it! 8-) I'm not sure where it's going to end up in my house, but it'll be a permanent resident of my arcade for a long time to come!
Just wanted to share my excitement! I think I'll step out and play it for a while!

I don't think it ever got much action in the arcades. The thing is an absolute beast to move as it doesn't really come apart. A lot of them that are left have been cut in half to make them more like a normal upright, which is a sad sight. The full environmental (which this one is) has 4 channel sound as well as lots of flashing lights and other little extras you can't do in an upright.
It's kinda hard to tell from the pics, but the gameplay is the disc battle between Tron and Sark from the movie. You have a joystick and a spinner (like the normal Tron arcade). The joystick moves you on the platforms and the spinner aims your disc throw. You just have to hit Sark twice to knock him off while dodging his discs as well as the other annoying things that fly at you.
Personally, I think it's the most fun level of Tron to play, even over the light cycles! If you ever get a chance to play one, give it a shot! Pure gaming goodness!

Hoo-yah! Man, it's hearing stories like this that keep me out there day after day hunting for finds.
Just don't be surprised if you flick on the light at night and you see a comic book store owner run under the fridge. LOL

If you have any problems with it, shoot me a PM. I've got it and it has given me horrific problems. The monitor in paticular is poor and it seems to be a common thing with that game. Still, it's a great showpiece, even powered down. One thing I can tell you now: DO NOT turn it on and off frequently. Once you've turned it off, leave it off for at least a day or two before turning it on again. It will save the monitor (not from burn-in but from actual damage to the wiring and circuits).

Oooh mama!
We had one arcade that had that back in the day. I'd just go there and stand in it when I didn't have quarters. (I'd also sit in the Star Wars cockpit when the money ran out.) Envrionmentals are just too fucking cool and that one, IMHO, was one of the best.
Enjoy that. $450, eh? A steal.

Great capture my man! I'm lucky enough to have played on a fully working DOT Environmental, and it's quite the experience. Probably also because the game can be bloody hard. What's wrong with it? You might be able to ask the guy I know who has the working version of it for help...

Oh wow, congrats man, that thing is awesome and looks great to boot! They used to have one of those at our Photon, which was our "laser tag" place back in the day. Photon was already filled with black lights and fog, which made that Tron cabinet just that much cooler.
How in the heck do you move one of those things?

Actually, the last one of these I played was the one a couple of machines down from the Spyhunter I'm playing here. I remember it being at the front of Alladin's Castle a year earlier and it sloooowly made it's way to the back of the room and *POOF* gone.

Nice to find another owner! I'm fortunate that a good friend of mine has one of these as well, so I can use his cab to test boards and what not. I was lucky to find one that already works, with the exception of the chaser lights at the top. I know how to beef up that board though, so it's no biggie. I've also got a freshly rebuilt and rejuvenated monitor just waiting to go into the game. I think once those issues are taken care of, I'll be good!
As it is right now, I can play it just fine though. Needs a good cleaning and I need to replace the floor under the entire game, but nothing else really needs any attention!
It's really nice to have this one in my possesion. Even after I had paid for it, I was worried that someone else would come along and offer the guy more than what I paid for it. I wasn't calm until I had it in the back of my truck and headed home!!
Flack - Come on out once it's finished and I'll let you experience first hand how to move it!! ;) It's really not too bad. The guy that had it before me had separated the front and back, so it can be tilted to get it through a standard door. It's taller and heavier than a normal 19" cab, but it's narrower so that helps a bit. Still, it's a beast. I think I'll put it on some heavy duty casters when I redo the bottom. Just so I can move it around when it's in my gameroom.

Excellent find! I've always loved DOT in the arcade but never have I played nor have I seen in person the sit-down cab. And for $450-that's a steal for a setup like that and in its condition.
Stand ups are cool but a lot of the sit-downs just add that extra bit of sweetness as they usually have some extra installed like speakers. For example anyone who has played sit down Spy Hunter can attest to that. It's a thrill hearing the Peter Gunn theme blaring through the backrest and feeling the explosions rumble though the seat.

Absolutely! Standing inside this thing, looking down at the glowing rings under your feet and hearing the disc whiz by your head and bounce off of a wall behind you is an incredible sensation. I can't imagine what it would have been like in 1983 when this was new technology! Totally mindblowing I would expect!

Hey there congratulations on your new griail. As a fellow owner of one of these beasts I'm gald that the few remaining uncut ones are finding their way to true collectors who won't hack them to shreds. I know I will never sell mine and it will have to pryed out of my cold dead hands if the occasion ever arose (not that it could be moved  ) Let me know if you get the flashing flurescents to work. I'm still having problems with mine. :D

I can't say this hasn't been cut, but I don't count that as a bad thing. Without cutting it, there's no way it would ever get inside my house. But fortunately, it was taken apart as opposed to truly cutting it so it goes back together nice and easily.
As far as I can tell, the fluorescents on mine are working great. I know the chaser lights up top don't work, but that's a fairly easy fix. If you want me to check something on my machine for you, just fire me a pm here and I'll see what I can do for you!

I cringe at the implication of "uncut." No naughty humor there either - I can't imagine someone altering one of these machines or turning them into a MAME cab or something. Gah.

Just for the record, DOT was never available as a sit down cockpit. It is a stand up environmental, which makes sense because your guy is standing up in the game. There is a little half seat type thing installed on the back panel, but it is just to rest your but on, you are still standing.
They had this game back in an arcade I grew up in, JUST FUN, at the Fairfield Mall in Chicopee, MA *both arcade and mall long gone :( I played it every week and I totally rocked at the game. Probably one of the best arcade games ever. Total immersion.......this thing was just completely sick a$$

Earl, You are welcome to head on down Denver way anytime sir. You would honor my home by a visit. Then you could tell me what pieces I am missing from my Odyssey I. :D That and we will drink a toast to Mr. Ainley. He was the Master in my book. I may take you up on that. It's been a long time since I got mine 90% up and running. Those running lights were a bitch but I got 8 out of 10 (or is it 4 out of 8) working. The flurescents work, but they don't flash like they are supposed to. Ahh well. On another topic, if your bottom lower plexi is looking horrid you can buy a cool repro. I actually sent mine to the gentleman who made them so he could get perfect specs. He also makes the repro floormats. (Darn I forget his name now) Anyway, best of luck on the project.
Cheers.

I think you're talking about Jaysun in Oklahoma City. If it is, I've already ordered the floor decal from him. I really want to find a cpo for it as mine is cracked at the bend.
One question for you, I've got one plexi cover that came off somewhere on the bottom. Is there a cover for both the front and back or just the back? The loose plexi I have has blue designs on it, so I assume it goes on the back, right?
When you rebuild your chaser light board, did you beef up the transistors? There's an anternate you can use, but you have to do some creative mounting. Supposed to make it much more robust. I can dig up the directions and send them to you if you need them.
I haven't dug into the flashers yet, but I've got a manual so I assume they are documented in there. Maybe that would help you out. Just let me know!

Funny you should mention him, I actually met him at the last local auction I went to. Nice guy, he does local cap kits for around $100 but I think I'm going to try one on my own first. He seems like a nice guy, with a nice mohawk to boot.

Yea, Jaysun is a great guy. I met him about a month or so back. He does some great repro work on arcade art.
If you want to watch someone do a cap kit first, let me know. You're more than welcome to watch or help me do one. After that, they're no big deal at all. After doing a couple there's no way I'd pay someone else to do them for me!

The DOT environmental is easily one of the top 5 most beautiful arcade games ever made.
Bulky and weighing a ton, but simply gorgeous!
That would be an outstanding piece for any home arcade, and fun to play as well.
All for $450!!
