I don't know of this was discussed before or not but I just saw this one (http://www.via.com.tw/en/VInternet/eve.jsp) by VIA for the first time.

And a year or two back I was wishing more handhelds would come out, now it's starting to look like over kill for the handheld market.

Oh well, as long as the DS and PSP are awesome, I will be happy...

Anyone thinking of making a handheld these days should give Tapwave and
Nokia a call first and ask them how things are going.

What have we had lately?

DS
PSP
N-Gage
Zodiac
That Gizmodon thingy
Now this Eve thingy
And when did GP32 come out?

That thing is ugly. I'll give them credit for the analog sticks though, although I hope they don't break easily.

This kinda reminds me of the 32/64 bit era. Think of all the consoles back then... 32X, Saturn, 3DO, Jaguar, Playstation, N64... everybody wanted a piece of the action, just like with handhelds today. Let's see, how did that turn out? Only two of those consoles did well.

I'm predicting that things will turn out the same way... only Sony won't take the top spot from Nintendo this time around. LOL

This wild 'n crazy thing uses PC hardware and is supposed to be compatible with PC games. If nothing else, at least it will have a strong software library from the moment it's released.

Good luck finding a PC game that'll run in a 640x480 resolution, though. Pong Kombat, anyone? x_x

P.S. The emoticon for : P expresses THE WRONG EMOTION. I'm looking for "sick to my stomach", not "playful teasing". Someone please change that!

Not quite so portable when I have to plug in a USB keyboard to play (pretty much any) PC games... :o

I mean, unless this thing is cheap as hell it's just a ugly, inferior laptop, right?

The Eve will cost under $500 when it ships early next year, Hwang said. Final pricing will be announced then.

"Under $500" better mean "Way under $500" if they plan to sell those. Too bad, I actually like the design quite a bit. Reminds me of the old Entex Stargate tabletop.

Yeah, unfortunately when an advertiser says "under x dollars!" that usually tranlates to x dollars minus one cent. Bring on that $499.99 handheld!

I love teh design, it just doesn't seem portable. Looks more like a tapletop then anything. And at that price, a table top will never work.

Since the only picture I could see was a rendering, something tells me that it's probably not going to built for a while.

I was thinking the same thing, minus the head explosion.

nah if you check out the E3 coverage you'll see it being played so at least there ae protos of it. i'm kind of thinking that this device is another sort of beast, more like an alienware PC than a GBA, a niche product for hardcore PC gamers. i mean on the plus side they dont have to worry about lining up developer support and so on...

That other article said its battery lasts for 2 hours before you have to swap it - great :P And I'm also really wondering how you're going to play existing PC games with this thing, with the controls and all. And how do you install them? It doesn't seem to have a CD-ROM drive, so you probably have to be at home on your PC and install the game via USB on the handheld - and then most of the games won't run or crash due to driver/Windows issues like on a normal PC, just what everyone asked for on a handheld, doh. Oh, and will it have the boot time of a PC as well? :P

Contestant: I'll take Portable Gaming for $1000.

Answer: "Oh, no! My Game Boy has a virus!"

Contestant 1: What is something you should never have to hear?
