I honestly had to say GameCube.
The Cube has a lot of games, unique games, you simply won't see anywhere else. All backed by the powerhouse that is Nintendo.
Sony has some unique stuff, but not anywhere near as much in volume. Not games I wanna try at least. Eye Toy is a cool gadget, and it's nice they're expanding so well, but I'm not interested yet. Give me a new Pikmin or Animal Crossing any day.
Then there's the whole idea of GBA connectivity. N made it work. And let's not forget the Game Boy Player.

I dont have much interest in the current consoles, but i would go for playstation 2, followed by the gamecuce

I think Gamecube wins this cause their library is a bit more focused and streamlined.
PS2 comes in second cause of sheer volume.
Xbox comes in third, but I see it in first place once EA starts releasing all the online sports titles, and they get the exclusives like Doom 3, True Fantasy, Fable, and Halo 2.

I voted for gamecube just because it has more of my style of games but I think the XBOX library is starting to come along nicely. It used to be just an expensive paper weight to me but boy is my BOX library growing. This next year it will probably double.

The XBOX library deffinately has some great titles, and it will get even better next year......BUT i have to say, that i lean twords the dreamcast out of all the systems listed. Games like toy commander, sonic adventure, samba de amigo, chu chu rocket, cannon spike, border down, and many, many others make it the winner...

I picked the gamecube of course. Too me, Nintendo simply puts out the type of games I like to play. (Mario, Sonic, Pikmin, Zelda) Their uniquness just rocks my world! And with the GB Player, just hands down Nintendo!
I am glad people on this site actually realize the value of a good game. That it doesn't just have to be guns and raping to have a good time in a game.
I also can't consider DC a current system, but the Dreamcast comes in second.

From Best to Worst: Gamecube -> XBox -> PS2 -> DC
Gamecube doesn't have that many "junk games" and has some very unique titles.
XBox has Halo and Live and is just a powerhouse of a machine, so the games look great.
PS2 has a HUGE selection, but a lot of it is just plain junk and makes picking a game harder for this system.
DC is last because it is the oldest and I never really got into it.

Gamecube beats out the PS2 and XBox, but I think they all have great libraries thanks to multiplatform games.

Dreamcast has the best without a doubt.
PS2 second.
Xbox is third, but it's library strengthens by the day, and is showing a lot of promise. I think at the end of the Xbox's life it will have beaten the PS2's library.
GCN is a distant fourth.

i can accept that you voted GCN on 4th spot (though i wouldn't), but WITH DISTANCE??? sorry but that is just plain unrealistic bashing, have you even heard of games like Super Monkey Ball, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, Resident Evil Zero, Wave Race, Billy Hatcher, Ikaruga and whatever???

I'm also going with Gamecube. It may have the smallest overall library, but I believe the overall quality of the library is much higher than the other systems. PS2 has a few good games, but the vast majority of the games it has don't interest me in the least. XBox is similar, except that it has NO games that interest me at all. DC has a few good titles, but I think that the system is vastly overrated - plus, mine refuses to work right, so I haven't played it in a long time.
Here's my overall ranking:
1. Gamecube
2. PS2
3. Dreamcast
4. XBox

I found Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime and Wind Waker to be big disappointments.
Resident Evil Zero doesn't really appeal to me and I haven't played Billy Hatcher or Super Monkey Ball.
Wave Race was okay, and Ikuraga, whilst excellent - was on Dreamcast first.
I stand by my opinion.
But that's what is - an opinion! I'm not saying that everyone thinks the GCN has a crappy software library. I just find that the majority of GCN's library is unappealing.
People all have different tastes. I respect that, and you should also. ;)

The Dreamcast is no longer a current-generation contender and its library is weak simply because it is not growing at all, the system being dead.
The best games of the PS2's library are PS1 games, which I don't quite think it's fair to count. Most PS2 games are garbage - it's hard to find the wheat for all the tares.
The Xbox is showing promise, but is still somewhat weak. KOTOR adds a lot, HALO is big, and Fable will add a lot, and the online sports things are strong. I would agree with you that they will probably beat the PS2, but...
The GameCube may be lacking in the RPG department, the sports department, and possibly in the "online" department if you're counting that, but that's about it. They excel in just about every other area. Of course, if you're only interested in a few types of games, I can see why you don't like it...but we're not talking about "which systems have the most games you want to play," we're talking about the strength of the library as a whole - and the GCN gets my vote.

I had to vote for the PS2.
While the GC has some fantastic games in all genres I think the PS2 has more hidden treasures just waiting to be (re)discovered. Plus you have the genre leaders such as Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, The GTA series (one time exclusive) and a fair amount of off beat, cute, and quirky stuff that is fun to play. And I'm sure most RPG fans would vote PS2 over all the others.
And where are all the racing games for the GC? I mean good ones!
One thing about the GC is that it's easy to find games that are unique and/or familiar but sometimes you need more than that. But I gotta hand it to Nintendo they would get my vote for favorite game company over $ony and M$
As for Xbox... well I like that it has a few more 2D titles in the pipe, Metal Slug and SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos to name a couple and the racing titles are very good. Plus you can install various emulators on it and I think XBox live is cool but I have my PS2 online so no big whoop on that point
I just wish the PS2 was a little stronger machine sometimes

Gamecube all the way for me! With games like Animal Crossing, Gotcha Force, Harvest Moon, Megaman Network Transmission, Mario Sunshine, Smash bros. melee, and viewtiful Joe, there's no question about it.
PS2 would be second with great stuff like .hack, Disgaea, la Pucelle, Gungrave, Kingdom Hearts, Megaman X7, and Suikoden 3.
Dreamcast, though not current, would be third. Who could forget the greatness of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Power stone 2, Sonic Adventure 1&2, and Skies of Arcadia?
Xbox is fourth, because I don't have one, and the only games I've played for it that I really liked were Ninja Gaiden and Panzer Dragoon Orta.

agree that its not a current anymore..sniff sniff
After E3 I also have to say that the Gamecube should be running away with

The Dreamcast is no longer a current-generation contender and its library is weak simply because it is not growing at all, the system being dead.
In Japan the Dreamcast is receiving a bit of a revival and there are a lot of new and re-releases coming out for it.
It's not entirely dead.
In terms of hardware, the Dreamcast is more than adequate competition for the current generation of consoles - it's processing and graphical power is comparable to the PS2 (not to mention is doesn't suffer from PS2's 'jaggie' graphics thanks to DC's hardware anti-aliasing). And it's disc storage space of 1GB is close to the size of GCN's discs.
However, for the most part you are right. Dreamcast is relatively dead and nowadays I don't include it the the current crop of consoles.
I will disagree with the Dreamcast library being weak simply because it isn't growing. In it's short two year run, Dreamcast has more games on it love than either GCN/PS2/XB.
Favourite DC games:
Sega Rally 2 (DC exclusive)
Soul Calibur (DC exc.)
Sega GT
San Francisco Rush 2049 (third party)
Sonic Adventure
Metropolis Street Racer (DC exc.)
Daytona USA 2001 (DC exc.)
Tokyo Highway Challenge
Dead or Alive 2
Tokyo Highway Challenge 2
Chu Chu Rocket
The House of the Dead 2
Bangai-O
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Sonic Adventure 2
Shenmue (DC exc.)
(When Dreamcast was alive, many more of these games were exclusive to DC - thanks to it's demise, many of these games have found their way onto to competitor's consoles).
PS2:
Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec (PS2 exc.)
Crazy Taxi (appeared on DC first)
Auto Modellista (third party)
TimeSplitters 2 (third party)
Guilty Gear X (appeared on DC first)
Stuntman
XBOX:
Panzer Dragoon Orta (XB exc.)
RalliSport Challenge
Shenmue II (appeared on DC first)
Project Gotham Racing (XB exc.)
Halo
GCN:
Star Wars: Rogue Leader (GCN exc.)
Burnout (third party)
Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN exc.)
Soul Calibur II (third party)

While I love my DC, nothing can stop Nintendo. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc., just can't be beat.
I have more games for my GC than I do for my PS2 and Xbox combined, and nearly twice as many GC games than DC.

I'm amazed how many people are voting Gamecube. So many current-gen games are being released/scheduled on only the PS2 and XBox these days. Yeah, Nintendo's games, yada yada yada... Gamecube has some awesome exclusives, but so do the other two, along with the lion's share of new releases (are there some numbers on this to back me up?). If I could pick just one (which I won't), it wouldn't be the 'cube. I think it's becoming fashionable on this board to be a Nintendo fan (check the PSP vs. DS thread). Cool systems, yes, but I wouldn't put my videogame stock in the Big N if I was looking to make a mint. I guess they cater to nostalgia more than Sony or Microsoft care to. Unfortunately, with that attitude, they're destining themselves to being second place at best. Not starting a flame war, so don't flame me. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

eeeeh i've got a pretty big DC collection (PAL) and there are quite a lot of crappy titles in there (Soul Fighter, Freestyle Scooter and many more), the whole "DC has a incredibly good library"-thing is just a myth, sorry, i love all the good DC games and i like the System (why else would i be hunting for a complete collection) but holy crap, the library as a whole is not half as good as many people want you to believe, at least in Europe...

-RPG: Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos and more coming and there's also FF:CC, i know that's not the best line-up, but to be honest the Xbox doesn't have a single good eastern rpg, and the PS2 hasn't got too many either (Dark Chronicles, FF, Wild Arms, BoF..??)
-Sports? i don't see where that one comes from, you've got Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Football, Icehockey, Skateboarding and Inlineskating in their best shape and also some fun-racers (Mario Kart, ATV 2....), the only thing really missing are realistic racers and good rally games, that's true and that's where xbox makes big points
-Online. Absolutely true, but not an issue over here, i don't even have a flatrate (i CAN'T have one!!)

PS2 for one simple reason. The sheer numbers of games can do wonders when you have a diverse group of people who want to play games together.
Do I really think that I can find all that much sports stuff on a Cube? nope. What if someone wants some good platformers that are exclusive (and not on all 3 systems) the XBox isnt gonna have em, and Hell neither is the GameCube. More adult type games with violence? PS2. What about strategy and puzzle games? PS2.
Yes there are a lot of crap titles, but at the same time, there is such a mass of titles that one almost cant go wrong, and not find something that they would enjoy.

can someone tell me why Sony is even second in this poll. I don't have a

In my opinion I regularly buy games for all three consoles (although I'm leaving DC out as I haven't bought a title for it in about 2 years) .. I love all three but in order of 'best' library I think it's PS2, GC, Xbox in that order.
PS2 does it by sheer volume, then GC comes second with it's stable of unique games as well. Xbox comes third, as the majority of it's games can be found on ps2 as well. I do have to say however that if a game exists ons xbox and ps2, I'd take the Xbox version. But even despite that, PS2 just still has more. Put it this way.. you can't find Space Invaders 25th Anniversary collection for Xbox :P and that's just for starters.

Yes I make a solid point. How is it that a system that has something like almost 600 games for it so far be considered generic? There will be something there for EVERYONE who might ever want to play a game, for ANY niche or playstyle. Yes there are crap titles, but like NE146 and I both said. Volume speaks words.
I had to think hard about this before I answered, having ALL current Gen systems and a shit load of games for each (PS2=256, XB=96, GC=73) as well as being a Nintendo Fanboy since I was six and got my NES. I try to be unbiased in my choice, looking at a part of the solution or looking ahead at games to come, cause if we did that the Xbox would reign supreme. This is all about what games are out there now, that one could walk into the store and pickup.
All the systems have their sell points, XBox has Live, and some good titles. GameCube has the best FirstParty development allways making good games, and some good non-Nintendo developed exclusives, and the PS2 has THE Library of games, and a decent online system and great market support for exclusive titles.

I thought the inclusion of the DC in the poll might be somewhat controversial. My question is, if you don't include it in the current generation, would you include it in the previous gen (PSX/Saturn/N64)? I think not. I also think the DC is a good benchmark for the "later" systems, library-wise.
Looking at the polls, it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference anyway.

PapaStu

And since the DC is in, and maybe NeoGeo, then we need to add the PSOne, which still has games coming out (and a few more in the pipes).

05-17-2004, 06:08 PM
I see no reason why PS1 and Neo Geo can't be included in if the DC is too.
This poll should only consist of the Cube, Xbox, and Ps2, because anything else and it starts to get fuzzy. Yes, the DC is technically "current gen", but outside of some hentai games and dating sims, nothing new is on the horizon for the console as far as commercial releases go. Those last few shmups that came out will in all likelihood be the last games of note to come out on the platform. It's done. Up until last year the Famicom was getting games published, and active support from nintendo....but there was nothing new, and so no one considered it current gen.
Kid Ice
05-17-2004, 08:10 PM
I'd more likely disqualify the DC than add Neo Geo or PSX.
Maybe someone else can start a "best library ever" poll and just include everything. Or a "best library for a disc based system".
