Note: Twilight Zone time change strikes again! See below posts first and then read mine which is a response to Sarah's... :)

Yeah, I listen to the show myself. I often may not agree with his opinions, but I do like the show. I also like reading through the forums he put up some months ago. And the web site has some cool links he associates with each month's show. I think this is the first month in a while where he actually had the show out early instead of a few days late, hehehe

Like Sarah said, it certainly is a "like him or hate him" thing, I believe. I personally really like hearing him go off on his rants, even if I think he's wrong (I disagree on his opinions on E3 and Nintendo and modern gaming quite often, but that's the kind of stuff that makes life more interesting...). But it's entertaining and I quite enjoyed the Don Bluth, David Crane, and Gary Kitchen interviews over the past few shows.

Shane and Bryan are pretty okay in my book, even if I disagree on some of their stated opinions. And I love radio shows, so yeah, I would suggest it to anyone who hasn't heard it. You'll possibly come away pissed, or tired of the phrase "engine whoring," or if you don't take things too seriously you can get some enjoyment out of it and learn some new insight in the process. And if you decide that you don't like it, you don't have to listen. ;)

I know there are a few other radio shows related to classic or reto gaming floating around, but are there any others on a pretty regular schedule like this one? I'm too lazy to look it up myself. :)

What do you guys think of Retrogaming Radio (www.retrogamingradio.com)?

For me, it's a love/hate thing. When Shane R. Monroe sticks to retro games, it's a good show (although I'm getting tired of hearing about Dragon's Lair!). But it's another story when he starts ranting and raving about the current videogame industry sucking. I sometimes wonder if he's ever played any modern game. I mean, of course there are a lot of uninteresting and downright sucky games. But there are also a lot of jewels in the crop of games available right now, certainly enough of them to not say that the modern videogame industry is in a sorry state.

Of course, the fact that Shane R. Monroe is the kind of guy who doesn't listen to anyone else's opinion (listen to the latest show, especially the part when he reads some listeners' mail) just makes this more unbearable. And his anti-Nintendo stance (he hates them with a passion) makes him blind to anything good that the big N does.

Yes, he is. After a hiatus of a few months last year, he resumed his show on a monthly basis last fall. Aside from a few weeks when he was changing ISPs, his show has been online regularly ever since.

Any suggestions on to what other shows names are? I've been trying to hunt some down on the net for a while but haaven't had any luck yet. I enjoy Shane's comments, however you have to realize everyone has their opinions ... you just have to start to enjoy listening to others...

To me -- just hearing someone talking about retro gaming in general is a great thing, and I'm thankful for just hearing it. :)

The forums have become quite a popular extension - and I can't even imagine the show without them now. Way too important.

As for the show being late, I'd love to blame my producer more, but its often my fault. But hey, its not like we're being paid... :)

Most people have figured out that, agree or not, the show would just be another review magazine if not for a little controversy and disagreement. Granted, we've lost a good deal of listeners that haven't gotten ahold of this - but its okay. We really want people to enjoy themselves, not listen to the show every month and just get all upset.

We appreciate it. Bryan and I agree that if you DON'T come out of the show pissed about SOMETHING, then we aren't doing the show right. The show was DESIGNED to make people think - and even if they don't agree or get pissed - we've done our job.

Who wants to listen to an hour long show where everyone agrees with what we say? People say we rehash some issues ("Engine whoring" and "Generation Gimmie" plz) but every show needs some stability. We could just review old games all show - but how quick would that get old?

Just please don't bring up my stalker show ... Those of you who have been around a few years know all about that... :)

Heh, everyone is tired of Dragon's Lair ... Understand I have a long arm into that community and lore, and it allows me to provide a deeper insight than I can in many other areas. Don't worry - we're expanding - and we have a LOT of stuff coming (including MODERN GAME programmers) to the show that will help offset the Dragon's Lair coverage.

As for love/hate - I agree. I honestly take the Howard Stern approach to the show. When you agree with me - you'll love me. When I say something you don't agree with - it will piss you off and you'll hate me. But even people that hate me for some reason go out of their way to listen to the show - and that's what I want. Disagree or not, I hope that people take SOMETHING useful from the show - and I think we're doing that ...

Hmmm... I begin to wonder if I'm not the only person with selective hearing! :) If I didn't listen to anyone else's opinion, why on earth would I give them any air time on the show? I get hundreds of letters a month of people with more opinion than this guy. I could make a whole show out of reading letters - and I could certainly do what other shows do - and NEVER read or mention opposing opinions; I COULD just read the hundreds of great letters we get every month too. I believe in being fair - doesn't mean I'm going to read the letter then keep my mouth shut afterwards :)

As for Nintendo, again, I'm wondering if people listen close to the show, or just wait to hear the parts that upset them. I've praised GBA on many shows. I'm seem to recall that if I was forced to own a modern console, I'd own a GC. I'm sure I've talked up Super Monkey Ball a bunch of times.

And as for modern games, I've touted several of them. But this isn't GAMING RADIO, this is RETROGAMING RADIO, and I have almost 4 years of listeners that (by and large) don't want to hear about GTA3 - otherwise they have tons of other sources to hear about that.

When I mention a modern game online (Hey, I reviewed PacMan 20th for PSX!), you can bet its quality.

On another note, when the Flashbacks come back, you'll find a lot more cross platform perspective, as well as discussion of 'where can you find at least some of this play in a modern game'.

I'm not defending my position - I believe 110% in everything I say and do. I just want to EXPLAIN my position. :)

I still believe it too. That much hasn't changed. But, we move on.

Those who think that every FPS is different enough to warrant another $50 a pop have long since stopped listening. We just can't subscribe to the concept.

My main beef with the FPS is we really get no innovation - at least give us some new weaponry. Look at the old FPS BLOOD - they managed to lose the pistol-shotgun-chaingun-ghostbustergun-bfg motif - any game where you can voodoo doll someone to death - count me in.

Thanks for responding to the topic, Shane. Hey, we've got to agree to disagree, right?

I'm glad to hear that the Flashback segment is coming back! BTW, I might be wary of hearing about Dragon's Lair, but that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy the interview with Don Bluth!!!

And you're right, even though I disagree with you when it comes to modern gaming, I still enjoy the rest of your show. So its purpose is filled. :)

Glad you came in to respond Shane. Anyone who comes to the DP forums and has a rant Classic gaming radio show is alright in my book! :bangurhead:

I try to get around when I can. Unfortunately, I'm working upwards of 70 hour work weeks, no days off for good behavior :(

Sometimes though, you gotta just put work off and make your rounds.

I glad people talk about the show at all, honestly. No such thing as bad publicity after all.

I've already recorded 3 full Flashback pieces for the coming shows - very fun. Be sure to drop by the forums and put in any requests. We're trying to listen as much as possible - I've covered almost all my most favorite games.

:)
