Just saw a blurb over on Good Deal Games that a slightly watered-down version of Tron 2.0 is in the works for the GBA, and it's going to include the first-ever home version of the 1982 Midway Tron arcade game. Oh happy day! I have some worries about how things like the spinner-heavy portions of the game will translate, but...geez, only took 22 years, eh? :D

Midway's Tron = joy

Maybe I'll finally have something to play on the GBA now... :D

It will also include Discs of Tron. Yup, BOTH Tron arcade games on your GBA. And, it'll have Tron 2.0, which is just gravy.

FYI, the guy who did the emulation for that, sits a few desks away from me.

Damn fine emulation, I must say.

Emulation? I'm THERE, dude.
So, how's the meat of the game going to be handled? I can't imagine a system like the Game Boy Advance handling a slightly modified first person shooter very well.

Tron 2.0 is going to wind up sorta like Jedi Power Battles did - isometric 3D, not first-person. The screenshot I've seen looks pretty darn cool though.

JR I believe I saw screenshots someplace that Tron 2.0 is gonna be a 3/4 perspective platformer. But it WILL have first-person shooter elements when combat is entered. I'll see if I can dig up info/screens....

[EDIT] Here's an article on it:

One thing that I don't remember being in the Tron 2.0 PC game are those space-invader-esque transport ships / planes that I see in one of those screenshots. I mean - they do have them, but they're not flying around like that, you just ride a "train" of sorts between areas and have to avoid a search on one. Is this supposed to be a translation of the PC game of the same name? The previews don't seem to make that clear. It looks like it when I see things like the Kernel in the screenshots, but the PC version never let you play as Mercury.

Look out! A RECOGNIZER (http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/hizzouse/full-5/cabinet3.jpg)! Thing is, that middle screen shot shows the Recognizers flying around the way they did in the original movie, and so help me that looks like a screen shot right out of Space Paranoids. I am SO going to buy this game. *swoon*

My ONE gripe from reading IGN's article (thanks Tim!) is that Tron and Discs Of Tron will be unlockables. Screw that noise - put 'em on the menu plain as the light of day, I say. I hate having to unlock the game that I actually bought the bloody cartridge to play in the first place (see also Asteroids for the GBC).

My problem is with the isometric POV. I know it's often used as a 3D substitute on the GBA (see the Tony Hawk series and Jet Grind Radio), and I can't stand it. As much as I love the THPS series on a current console, I can't stand it on the GBA.

Isometric POV just doesn't do it for me.

I think, PDF, to FINALLY get a home version of Tron it's worth it. :)

I'm not sure how it will handle, but I can play it on my Game Boy Player and use my GC controllers analog sticks -- that should work okay.

Tron 2.0 is a great game. Be interesting to see how they handle it on the GBA. :D

For the spinner-specific stuff in Tron and DOT, maybe the aiming will be handled with the left and right shoulder buttons. That would be nice and instinctive.

Keith, am I way way way off in thinking that's how it might be handled?

Yup, that's the controll scheme.

AWESOME!

Okay, I've officially decided that this is going to rock. Even if the arcade ports are only unlockables. :D
