This game is great! Everyone touts the 7 games that are on this game (Sonic 1,2,3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D blast, Sonic Spinball, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine), but what you don't hear is that there are 5 unlockable games on this great disc. What are they you ask? I don't know yet, I just got the game, and forgot to bring my memory card, so I probably won't know for awhile.

As for features, there are a lot of great ones. whether more can be unlocked, I don't know, but here's what's available when you first start the game up.

Sonic Comics: These were printed by Archie Comics (yeah, I know). It has an introduction to the comics, and then the first special issue reprinted in its entirety (27 pages). then, it has images of the covers for all of the issues (1-110), and the covers for Knuckles the Echidna (1-32), the Sonic Super special series (1-5), and other series (Sonic Live, Sonic Blast, Tails, Princess Sally, etc.). these pages are high resolution and zoomable.

Illustrations: stock illustrations that we've all seen before of all the characters. there's one character that I've never seen before, a bunny of some sort...

Movies: The intro and ending animated sequences to Sonic CD are on here, as is footage of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic Advance, and a visual history of Sonic, which is pretty cool.

Instruction Manuals: The original Genesis Manuals for the 7 open games are also included in the same high resolution zoomable viewing mode as the comics.

Each game is prefaced by an introduction of the game and its place in the lexicon and history of Sonic and the Industry, as well as a shortcut to the Instruction Manual for that game.

As for the emulation, it's spot on in all the available games. If there were such a thing as blast processing, then the gamecube would have it in spades. The best thing is that the very nature of sonic's movement (and the loose feel of the genny d pad) means that controlling old school sonic with the analog joystick is just as enjoyable and natural as controlling him with a d pad.

I highly recommend this game. Er, when it comes out that is, which I think is on the 12th.

I wonder what the unlockable games are. I'm appalled that Sonic CD hasn't made it into the collection (Maybe that's one of the unlockable ones?) ... I think Sonic CD was one of the best, and boy I wish I could find out where my copy of it ended up. It got lost during my move.

It's great that the comics and such are in the game. I wish more repacks like these would include insentives like that. Intellivision lives is a good example. All the history and extra goodies really made it a great piece.

Please oh please let Sonic CD be there somewhere :)

I read in an interview on gamespot that Sonic CD didn't make the cut because of space limitations. it would be rather unlike a spokesperson to say a game is not on there even if it is unlockable. And the fact that they included the ending movie on the disc kind of underscores that, alas.

the one thing i always wondered about is that Mean bean machine is the same thing as Kirby's Avalanche. Who copied who? Sega or Nintendo?

Haha! They BOTH copied Puyo Puyo.

Actually, both games seem to have been licensed from Compile (the makers of the original Puyo Puyo), as proper credit is given in both games' start screens.

On the other hand, I don't remember seeing Compile's name anywhere in the GBA port of Puyo Pop (I thought the series was actually created by Sega!).

Anyway, I'm really interested by the Sonic collection compilation, but that would make it my third copy of a Puyo Puyo game (I already have Puyo Pop on the GBA and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on a Majesco-released Genesis cart).

Would have it be so painful to include Sonic CD on a 2nd GC disc though?

Unless there was an editorial mistake in the November issue of Game Informer, they said the compilation includes:

Sonic 1/2/3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic CD, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball, Mean Bean, plus three others totaling 11 in all.

They also said that the other three were confirmed by Sega to be from the 16-bit era.

Somebody is wrong, and i'm not sure who, but I sure hope GI was right.

Well I have the game sitting on my desk, so I can tell you that Sonic CD is not one of the 7 games immediately available. And the ending sequence to Sonic CD is already available from the get go in the "Movies" section. But it would be awesome if they did include it after all that denial (and it would be a very Sega type of thing to do). I think I'll just have to bring it home and beat all the sonics to try and open up some of that stuff.

All for you guys, don't you feel special?

you know how we found out about those extra trophys in Smash Brothers Melee?

Well word has it that one of the unlockable sectrets in the Sonic collection is a file to save to your memory card so you can unlock Sonic in Smash Brothers!

Obviously I'm joking guys. :-)
