So....how does this affect sega as a whole? As long as Sega keeps making new sonic games, I'll be fine.

the gaming magazines have been circulating this rumor for quite some time already.

So it is not a surprise.

Sammy is one of the biggest gaming manufacturers of Japan, making Pachinko machines (Japan's most popular gaming culture, making more money than video games).

Will Sammy swallow Sega in the end and discontinue the name? Who knows!!!

Would Sonicteam still make games as an independant developer???
They are the only reason to have a Sega now anyway.

I'm sad. Even though they've taken a downturn in the last few years I grew up on Sega's hardware and games and it's sad to think that their name may die. I was sad when they discontinued Dreamcast stuff; got my hopes up with that E3 stunt and now I'm just bummed. :bawling:

Still seems like a weird combination of companies to me... But I guess this is probably the best way for Sammy to finally make a big splash in the video game world. It's always sad to see a company like Sega go the way of Atari, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sonic, Super Monkey Ball, and all of Sega's other franchises will still be around as long as Sammy/Sega can make money off of them. I'm curious to see what will happen to people like Yu Suzuki though.

Virtua Fighter vs Guilty Gear anyone?

Y'know, just because Sega is being bought out by a pachinko company doesn't mean that it will die a slow and painful death. Just look at SNK! Er, I mean the second time they were purchased by a pachinko company, not the first. Try to forget that whole Aruze thing ever happened.

Besides, this is Sammy we're talking about! You should have more faith in the creators of such unforgettable classics as Amagon, Arkista's Ring, and Death Crimson!

As bad as it has been for me the past few years of segas lifespan, im not EXTREMELY dissapointed, i like sammy, and i doubt they will wipe out segas name , sega is a MUCH bigger name in gaming that sammy, so im sure they willl keep it, but who knows what till happen, sammy is a WELL TO DO company , NOW maybe a new home console can be possible o.O, either way my steadfast faith in sega will never die, untill sega is no more im on the ship with them

First the crappy "Big Ass secret" of E3 and now this!? That really pisses me off! WTF is wrong with you SEGA?!

I mean don't get me wrong, the Sega systems are my favorite consoles of all time, but it just makes me angry/sad to see Sega bought out by a Pachinko company.

My only hope now is that 1.They don't suck as bad as Sqaure-Enix. And 2.They make a new console! ;)

Man thats sucks... Sega was a good company, especially with PSO. Too bad Sega and Sammy aren't merging..That would be sweet.

Know what also sucks? Pachinko has a very very small following here, unlike is Japan, where it is wildly popular.

I think i remember reading once that the owner/head of sammy was quite the sega fan, so if thats true then hopefully sega will still be sega just with that extra sammy bit :-P
The only positive to this is that it wasnt EA buying them out. It scares me to think of how bad a company like EA would whore out the classic sega brands *shudders*

That said, tis a sad day in video gaming history. Especially for a sega fanboy like me :(

honestly mergers are a way of life nowadays the interesting thing is to see what divisions will survive and which will break off to form companies. it would be cool to see some of sega's big names latch on to other companies or form their own. imagine a yugi naka nintendo game. hey with the atomiswave console...we kinda need a undying replacement for the neogeo and what better than the board where snk is developing their arcade stuff for. this isn't that bad. but a new sega console would be nice

Will they still be using the Sega name or will all new games have the Sammy name brand on them?

USED FOR NAME ONLY.

This really saddens me. Sega was a large part of my younger days. My old gamegear still sits on the top of the closet. Hopefully they at least keep the sega logo and name alive. If it turns to sammy I am going to curse god.

The new company name looks to be:

"SEGA Sammy Holdings Inc."

and in japan's stock market, one share of SSHI = one share of Sammy = .28 share SEGA

SEGA got swallowed up, and will essentially count as 28% of the Sammy Corp. financially. I would assume they'd act like RARE used to be with nintendo, making their own games but Sammy says where they go and on what system.

What's all this complaining about being bought by a pachinko company? Nintendo was a playing card company. Coleco made dolls and toys. Sega was an EM arcade machine company. Sony was an electronics company. Microsoft was an OS company.

Very few of the major game companies started with video games. Being bought by someone who isn't a VIDEO game company isn't a bad thing. It means that Sammy is so committed to grabbing a share of the VIDEO game market that they're willing to buy one of the very top brand names in the world in order to do it. That fills me with confidence, not dread. You don't spend that type of capital to bury a brand that's not even in your marketspace.

Well, another way to look at it is if Sammy is a huge maker of Pachinko machines then they obviously do much more than just software. Get where I'm going with this?

I'm also aware that Sammy is the larger comany of the two I was just hoping that they'd keep the Sega name because I think it has more recognition in the videogaming industry than Sammy does.

One more question for the videogame historians out there, wasn't Sega at one point a US company (SErvice GAmes) or something like that? How did it eventually become a Japanese company?

You're right, that's the whole point of buying an established brand rather than entering the market with their own properties. They buy not only established products but a name with existing credibility in a new market for them. Trust me, the NAME Sega is worth a lot more than the PROPERTIES that come with the acquisition.

:( This depresses me....But i suppose if they keep the SEGA name, and continue to employ SEGA's employees, and progrmers than everything might just be OK. Like enemyzero said "my steadfast faith in sega will never die"

I just found out about the news and im really sad. Sega used to be a great company (specially in the 16-bit era), but they`ve been on a downward spiral since the mid 90`s....i hope sammy gives the R&D teams enough money to keep producing great quality games (how about a Nights sequel or shenmue 3!! )

We sega fans, will have to wait and see what happens...

I think its less about being bought by a pachinko company and more with the fact they were bought.

It brings considerable fear about what exactly Sammy has planned for the company.

Hmm, well, I step away from the PC for a few days and this is what happens :D

Not surprised at all.

If anything...Sammy > Sega these days. I mean really. I don't see how this could be bad at all, unless you like crappy console titles or something. I'd hate to see the Sega name on the same line as Sammy's (but I don't think that's going to happen since we've got brand name recognition with Sega) but I see this as a positive development. Sammy's been pushing Sega to stay in the arcades, and I'd like to see what they've got to offer. They'll still trickle out a few - hopefully A-grade - console titles now and then. Games of the Phantasy Star Online/Dreamcast generation just don't stand out in my mind like the classic stuff did, even up to the days of the Saturn you had some really nice titles appearing like Panzer Dragoon. Heh. I'm probably going to get flamed for saying all that, but I see this as some necessary fire under Sega's belly. Or perhaps this is more like opening up the beast and carrying away the yummy entrails...I dunno. It's going to work out.
