View Full Version : I figured if ANYONE could get my XBOX Online.. its you guys
The problem is, I don't know if my ISP is compatable or something.
I have a cable modem, my XBOX, and a live enabled game. I want to make sure it CONNECTS before I buy the 50 dollar live kit, or I could try XBConnect to play Hayler'.
Anyway.
I'm trying so hard and it's to no avail. I was on the phone with the xbox line a while back for like 2.5 hours and they had no clue whatsoever about the problem.
I have two cables, one cat5 crossover and one straight through [I think they're different..]
I don't have a router though. Do I need one? Please say no.. Nor hub.
Help appreciated.

if you're using your PC as a bridge between the xbox and the cable modem, no you don't need a router. HOWEVER, the PC must be told that there's another machine past it that needs to share the connection. It's called "IP routing" and it's what a router does essentially but you can make your PC do the same thing. If you have windows xp or 2k, simply look for the "Share internet connection wizard" (or something similarly worded) while your XBOX is hooked up to your computer. It should register the XBOX's MAC address (the imprint of the console's ethernet card) and allow it to use the same connection on your PC.
I think this will help :)

You don't HAVE to have a router, but it does make life easier for a couple of reasons. First off, some ISP's watch the MAC address you use and if you start swapping devices on your cable modem, they may not like it. Also, although I dont have X-box live, I'm pretty sure it uses DHCP to obtain an address. Your ISP could be using PPPoE and thus you would need software installed on you PC or a router to connect and authenticate to your ISP.
I'll need some more info berfore I can help you further. Who is your ISP? Did you install your PC or did they?
I'll reply back and help you along as best I can. Have no fear, I design and maintaing networks for a living so I'm confident we can get you online :)
(Although I have only been semi-emplayed for the last year :( )
adamg, i never knew about that wizard. Do you think I can try hooking my box up with my computer using XBConnect so I don't have to buy a 50 dollar kit and see it doesn't work?

My ISP is Patriot Media, and I installed my PC but they put in my cable modem.
Oh and which cable do I need to use, a crossover or straightthru.. and what do they look like respectively, as I forgot which is which. And there are a couple holes. Some on the back of my computer, one on the back of the modem, and one behind my xbox. Which plug goes into which hole and where? o.O

take both ends of the cable and turn them so that they are facing each other [one end-->] [<--other end] make sure the tabs (that little plastic thing) are facing the same directing (up or down). Now IF you can see the colors see if they match up:
R - R
B - B
G - G
etc. (those probably arent the exact colors)
if they line up its a straight through, if one end is reversed then its a cross-over.
Dont know if you tried this but connect it directly to the XB:
Plug in the cable line to the back of your modem
Plug on end of the straight thru into the connector on the back
Plug the other end into the connector on the back of the XB
Fire up an XBL game and see if it at least connects
If it does make some kind of connection, then i guess your ISP works.
Now do that who PC routing thingamabob

Who is your ISP? I think some ISP's don't allow you to go online with your Xbox or PS2. Go to their web site and they should have some info about it and instructions on how to set it up.
Hooking up my Xbox Live was the easiest thing I have ever done. My ISP is Comcast. All I had to do was plug the CAT5 cable from my router into my Xbox, enter the Live key code, and it was done.
I said it before, its Patriot Media.

Well then you need to call Patriot Media and find out what's going on. It sounds like your problem is with them, not Xbox Live.

Am I missing something here? From what I've read, you haven't purchased the XBox Live start-up kit, so you haven't even tried to connect ... you're just worried it MIGHT not work... Is this the case (or am I stupid and illiterate)? From what I've read elsewhere, virtually everyone with broadband can get it going. If I read this wrong, just ignore me...

Hmm. I did some digging on Patriot Media and cant seem to determine how the modems connect. Could you provide some info as to how you set up your PC to the Cable modem? Also, do you have the 2way or 1way service?
PC Questions:
1. Version of Windows (I'll need this to explain how to find certain info)
2. PC's IP adress if you know it. If not I can explain how to get it.
3. Did you have to install software from a CD when you set up your PC?
If so, could you try to describe it? Like does it startup on your PC every time you boot?
I have found some forums for Patmedia at broadbandreports.com but cant seem to find what I need to help you .... yet. :)
