After bitching endlessly about Sony's industry monopoly for the past few months, I've decided to put my money where my mouth is and pick up a GameCube. I couldn't ask for a better deal, either... I picked up my system at a nearby pawn shop for sixty dollars. This included not only the base unit but the audio/video cables (including a MadCatz RF cable with support for five different systems!), the AC adapter, and a generic controller, also by MadCatz. Making the deal even sweeter was the pawn shop manager's promise that I'd get 25% off my first GameCube game purchases. They didn't really have any games I wanted (or could afford), but I was informed that the store would offer Zelda: Wind Waker (among other things) next week. I'll probably be all over that when I get paid next week.

Right now, there's not much I can do with the system except mess around with the slick user interface, which uses the GameCube's unique shape as a recurring theme. The menu is itself a clear cube aimlessly drifting in space. To customize your system, you simply flip the cube over, revealing different options. The system interface isn't quite as memorable as the one on the Saturn or Playstation 2, but it blows away the static pictures on the original Playstation and the silly bouncing icons on the Dreamcast.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share my latest find with everyone here on the Roundtable. Purchasing systems is always a momentous occasion for me... it opens up new worlds of gaming enjoyment, plus it's fun to have more video game paraphenalia lying around the house.

Congrats, I agree with what you said buying a new system is always a memorable and fun ocasion(sp?). I just got a Japanese Saturn, and I will always remember that day! :)

Anyway, the first chance you get be sure to pick up Super Smash Brothers: Melee, and 3 extra controllers before you get anything else. Not only does SSB:M have awesome multi-player, it has huge replay value!

Also be sure to get a GameBoy: Player, as soon as possible! If your at home, you'll never play your GBA again. :P

Once again, I say congrats on your buying what I think of as the most durable CD system ever(right next to Saturn). And one of the best consoles for multi-player gaming.

Durable it is....my Gamecube has fallen off of my entertainment center three times now (while I was playing it), and every time I was able to keep playing since the system didn't shut off, reset, break, etc. :D

I would recommend a Wavebird wireless controller as well..it works as good as a regular controller without the mess of cords everywhere.

congrats on picking up the 'cube. its a great system by a great company. if you want to look for a very unique game for it, try and find Cubivore. this is a great game that you will spend a good chunk of time on.

To prove how durable it is. Everyone should look for a video called cubegone.

Congrats on the find, I suggest Mario Kart DD myself.

Since i FINALLY have a job, hopefully i too will be getting "cubed"....I think for a starting purchase i'll pick up mario kart dd, and 3 extra controllers. BTW, do they make any larger controllers for the GC? I have big hands and when i play GC i find myself fumbling around, and pressing more than one button at a time.....

I don't know what company makes them, but check Target--I got a larger controller there a long time ago (Like the week the GCN came out) for $15, an incredible deal at the time. If yo can't find one, I'd be glad to trade off mine as I find it rather uncomfortable.

Congrats on the cub man, you'll never have to second guess htat purchace. Oh and one other thing when you go back to the pawn shop or were ever to get a gamecube game look for Eternal Darkness Sanitys requiem it is a must buy for the system. Made by Sylicon Knights and Nintendo it is THEE SCARYEST FRIGGIN GAME YOU WILL EVER PLAY!!! Oh and if that isnt enough I see it going for less the $15 dollars used. Please buy it and play it you will be doing your self a HUGE favor. And any one else who has a cube and not this game stop reading and go find this game.

I would recommend Super Monkey Ball. It is a greatest hits title, and contains simplistic but super challenging gameplay. The multiplayer mini games are great fun as well.

If all that you can do is mess around with the system interface, try holding down the Z button when you power on the system.

That should entertain you for a good 3 seconds.

If you're into the RPG/Simulation category, try Animal Crossing. Kept me entertained for months, playing for many hours a day.

If you've got a cube, you've got no excuse to not go buy Viewtiful Joe & Megaman Network Transmission. My 2 personal GC faves.

I think the drugs wore off and they went and hung themselves for shame after seeing what they had done to such a glorious system LOL

Personally, the movie offended me back when I saw it.

Right now I feel I have little to show for my purchase of a GC...but it's getting better...*sings* all the time...

Can't wait until the new titles come out. :D

@ManekiNeko: Congrats on the purchase of a GC. Keep us updated with your first game purchase. Out of curiosity, what color did you pick?

I just watched that video. I find it amazing that the GC could be dragged down the road like that, and still play. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. :)

But still, it was painful watching the last part. :shameful:
Those guys are fucking dumbasses. May all their PS2s and Xboxes DRE.

@Nez: I don't think they'll be buying another GC. Personally, I think they should be condemned to not being allowed to buy anything but a Jaguar - no, fuck that - a Game.com - for the rest of their lives. LOL

Nice deal my friend. If you don't play The Legend Of Zelda: Windwaker I will send a large dinosaur to your house to defile you sexually. It is the most amazing game of all the ones I own for that system. I can't even explain how hardcore addicted I was to it. And this is coming from a person who was one of the cell shaded look haters. But once you play it you will not be a hater.

I thought it was an interesting video. Who cares if they burnt their Gamecube? Especially you Nintendo fans? All they did was pad the Big N's coffers...

I didn't like it becouse it was a waste of a perfectly fine gamecube. I dont like to see good systems, toys, cars, whatever be destroyed for no good reason.

You know, I didn't pay attention to that part the first time for some reason... I stand corrected.

I still stand by my Game.com comment, though. LOL

Same here.

I also didn't like the "owned" on the tombstone. Stupid. Or when one of the guys said "Nintendo sucks." At least they didn't show a PS2 or Xbox in the film to make a "NINTENDO IS TEH SUX!!!11!!!!1! XBOX ROXORZ!!!11!1" type statement.

Like I said, they're fucking dumbasses.

Yeah, I too am glad to know that my console could possibly survive a beating like that.. most all of my nintendo products have been GREAT as far as quality. Only had one controller die on me since I've started playing Nintendo consoles.. suprisingly enough a Gamecube controller, but it was mostly from competing in Super Monkey Ball. I just simply wore it out.

I realize they put money in N's pocket by buying two Gamecubes, but I still don't like to see that type of stuff destroyed regardless. It's something that a lot of people would like to have but can't, and seeing someone flush a $100 console down the drain when they could just sell it, make some cash, and make someone else happy as well.

Ah well.

@ManekiNeko: Congrats on the purchase of a GC. Keep us updated with your first game purchase. Out of curiosity, what color did you pick?

I bought a standard purple GameCube. Call me unadventurous, but it kind of bothers me when companies make their systems in a rainbow of bizarre colors. Part of a console's identity is its color scheme... everyone remembers the 2600 as a combination of greyish-black and woodgrain, while the Super NES is known for its white-beige exterior, decorated with loud purple buttons for contrast. When companies stray from the original design of their consoles and make them in every color BUT the one they chose when the systems were first released, the machines no longer stand out from everything else on the market.

Nice deal my friend. If you don't play The Legend Of Zelda: Windwaker I will send a large dinosaur to your house to defile you sexually.

Yikes. Well, I'd better buy the game then, because if I don't, I'll be spending at least that much money on KY Jelly.

(Wait, do dinosaurs even have those parts?)

When companies stray from the original design of their consoles and make them in every color BUT the one they chose when the systems were first released, the machines no longer stand out from everything else on the market.

I agree with you, with exception to the Gamecube. In my opinion, Indigo was a horrible color scheme for the Gamecube, or any console. I would own a Gamecube even if Indigo was the only color available, but I'm glad Nintendo had some other color options.

However, I think it's better that they stuck with three instead of going overboard like they did with the N64. Let's hope Nintendo learned their lesson and never release a "Jungle Green" or Pikachu styled 'Cube. LOL

But... why the hell is there an orange controller available? I kid you not...

http://i.walmart.com/i/p/00/04/54/96/95/0004549695005_215X215.jpg

What makes it worse is that there's no orange Gamecube! Therefore, hooking that up to a 'Cube is like beating it with an ugly stick.

Really? Well, that explains it... kinda. I still don't get why Nintendo released an orange controller in the U.S., especially since they haven't released the orange GC here.

Probably for the same "why?" reason the GBA player in the US is only available in black.
