I just recently got into the Saturn, and I've really started to like the Saturn style of graphics(they just look much more colorful(sp?) and sharp then most PSX/N64 games IMO)

So I was just wondering in your opinion, what are the most impressive(graphic) wise Saturn games that you have seen/played? Also which game do you think really pushes the Saturn to the limit?

My opinions from the games I have played...

3D-Last bronx, Virtua Fighter 2, NiGHTS, Christmas NiGHTS
2D-Rayman

Thanks for your opinions! :)

As far as 3d grafics are concerned panzer dragoon zwei and saga are pretty nice.
But being that it is a 2d power house look no further then themarvel vs capcom series beautifull game very impressive. The japanese X-men Vs Street fighter is one I have and hot damn its just amazing.

Galactic Attack aka Layer lection. First time I played it all the way thru I must have said "WHOA!" and "WOW!" out loud a half dozen times or more. Some of the art and 2D FX are that good!

My only complaint with the game is that the ship is kinda big and hard to dance around a barrage of tight enemy fire.

And I'm sure there are better looking games than this but GA should be an easy find online for less than $20 bucks complete.

Still a big fan of In The Hunt (http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/reviews/inthehunt/inthehunt.htm) too! Great art and animation with great attention to detail. Early levels are great, later levels are a pure madness!

Most impressive 3d game ive played is Manx TT. Its crap with the standard controller, but its probably heaps easier with an analog controller. Isnt Sonic-R supposed to be pretty sexay too :-P

Radiant Silvergun is the obvious answer. Soukyugurentai is "OK" but nothing special.

Look for the ports that Working Designs lovingly translated: Shining Wisdom (a lot like a Link to the Past), Dragon Force, and there was some war-strategy game that looked like Military Madness/Nectaris...I don't remember it's name. Albert Oddesy was another, I believe.

Those, and Shining the Holy Ark were the best games I played when the Saturn was around.

Shining Wisdom

Are we on the same planet here? I'm checking the encyclopedia right now on "cackiest-looking-game-ever" and it reads Shining Wisdom... x_x

I'm dead serious. It was great! The graphics were bizarre--a cross between Zelda-style munchkins and digitized "clay-model" backgrounds. It played really well, had a unique feature where you had to slam on the buttons to run, and was really fun.

And what does "cacky" or "cackiest" mean anyway? I don't get exactly what these people were slamming it for...

I realize that at this time, fighting games were busy selling big and ruining the industry for people with other tastes, but a lot of these Saturn action-RPG's are real gems for people interested in that genre. Shining Wisdom is one of them.

Oh yeah. The colors and some of the rotating/zooming FX on this game blew my mind.

It's all i ever asked for in a Genesis/SNES platformer game but could never have delievered.

I second that emotion. Actually, Shining Wisdom doesn't look that bad, but I never warmed up to its computer generated Weebles pasted against colorful hand-drawn backgrounds.

The most impressive 3D game I've seen on the Saturn has to be Layer Section II. I'd say Panzer Dragoon Saga but I played the game again in 2001, shortly before selling both my copies, and it hadn't aged well at all. Layer Section II, on the other hand, has simple but sleek futuristic graphics that work very well with the Saturn's 3D limitations.

Dead or Alive is another 3D triumph on the Saturn. It looks spectacular... and not just because of the enormous bouncing boobies on the characters. When my aunt saw the game, she exclaimed, "Oh, that's amazing! Never sell this one!" I DID wind up trading it off despite her plea, but I would have wound up regretting it had I not downloaded a copy later. There's an XBox version coming soon, so if you missed it the first time, you'll get a chance to make up for that mistake in a few months.

The Saturn has all kinds of beautiful 2D games. It would take forever to list them all, but the ones which stood out most were Marvel vs. Street Fighter, NightWarriors (none of that Vampire Savior crap, thanks), Keio Yugekitai, Asuka 120% Burning Fight, Radiant Silvergun, and (contrary to what you've heard earlier) Soukyugurentai.

P.S. "Cack" is synonymous with "poop".

I thought Grandia and Shining Force 3 looked fairly good for a 3D games.

I know I'm gonna get bottles and tomatoes thrown at me for this but D-Xhird. Texturing, to an extent, yes. It gets pixelly if to close, but if at the right angle and distance it will cover up the very thin and blocky characters, plus the costume designs are nice. The best part was all the effects it was pulling off on the Saturn. Light sourcing, trailing edges (better than Last Bronx), and different types of transparency effects. The ice stage I think shows the transparecy effects best, plus toss in the transparent Karen skirt code for an added one. Izanagi's stage backdrop I think was impressive looking, the Horsehead Nebula shimmering back there as asteroids zoom towards and away from you. Eiji's Babel stage had a nice looking background effect as well, especially liked the swirling clouds you see through the windows. It makes me wonder what would a 3D Eternal Champions might have looked like?

Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Vampire Savior come to mind. In the Hunt is also quite tasty...
