I've just spent £35 on a copy of Super Mario RPG but it doesn't seem to like my modded SNES (50hz/60hz switch)!
I've also noticed that the contact on the cart is longer than my Final Fantasy III cart and my All-Stars cart - these are the only other US carts I have!
UPDATE: Have just bought FF II and it doesn't work either!
Can someone help me - these 2 games have cost me a packet!!! x_x

I think this problem has been discussed earlier, try forum search for "mario rpg pal". But basically you'll have to get a US SNES.
On the FFII, I think your console only has a switch for 50/60Hz but the lockout chip hasn't been disabled. There's more info here (http://www.gamesx.com/importmod/sneslockout.htm).
The only way to REALLY get Mario RPG to work on a modded PAL-SNES is to do the N64-Style-Mod (Take the Regionchip of a US-Console ;))
Mario RPG does boot with some of the later Import Adapters (Fire 2, Action Replay 2 I think) but it crashes after a while. No way to play Mario RPG on a PAL-Console, sorry.
As for FF2, I'd just guess it's dirty ;)

Bugger!! Oh well, it looks like I'll have to buy a US SNES (even more money!!) I take it I'll need some kind of step down thang then?
As far as FF II goes when I switch on my SNES I get the title screen and tune but it doesn't go any further...any ideas?? I only just bought my modded SNES this morning - what a pain!!
BTW thanks for the help so far!! :D

I'm really late chipping in!.. and this has been discussed in other RPG / PAL topics..
You have pretty much no chance, of playing Mario Rpg with out it freezing or crashin, or not even loading at all on a Pal Snes, with any kind of converter, and like it was mentioned, you'll need a US SNES (the best IMO, but thats just me ;) )
I'v noticed on ebay.co.uk.. there have been alot of US Snes consoles going for cheap money but most of these are not in the best of cosmetic condition..
But the main thing is they work fine, and will play RPG is it was made to be played :-P

Hey predatorXs I was wondering since you brought up your favorite SNES was the US version...
I'm not sure anyone has tried it before if it is possible but I like the PAL version and was wondering could I take my US SNES apart removing everything from inside of it and retrofit it isnide of a PAL SNES version case?

Interesting idea.
I haven't got a gamebit handy to check for sure, but comparing my PAL and US SNES's from the outside looks like it should be OK - all the connectors etc are in the same places, and they are the same size. The only problem you'd have is that the US cart-slot is larger, so you'd have to carefully file down the edge of the cart slot on the PAL shell.
If you want a PAL shell, I've got a spare one from a dead console that I'd sell pretty cheap...

Atleast the reset button is different (slide/push) but it doesn't sound impossible. Try it. ;)
I wouldn't do so though - a PAL SNES with an enlarged Cartridge-Slot looks even worse than a stock US SNES. I'd rather cut the tabs on the US Version

Or you could just swap all your games into PAL cases aswell ROFL

If you do try it, (playing pal games on a US snes) let us know what happens, there is a good chance you'll hear alittle pop, as the fuse in the snes goes bye, bye... if you open any Snes converter you'll always find a small capacitor these regulate the power between the PAL snes game and the US or Japanese snes consoles.
So the fuse doesn't get blown each time.. you would plug it in, so with out this between the Pal cart and the US snes, i don't think it will work but please let us, what happens! ;)

Region lockout saddens me so much. UK gamers get my deepest sympathies.
They reject the great games we think y'all deserve, then they get so scared y'all are gonna boycott UK games in favor of NTSC US/JPN games. They deserve it
I'm sorry but seeing this stuff about putting your system on the line to play good games makes me vent.
OH By the way, the part about Mario RPG's cartridge extension being longer than your Final Fantasy III cart.....
Those are responsible for the 3-D rendered graphics in the game. They're chips that are capable of displaying special effects that the SNES won't pull off much. Here's a list of other games that have the longer extension:
-Star Fox, Stunt Race FX (Super FX)
-Megaman X2, Megaman X3 (Capcom "C4" chip)
-Street Fighter Alpha 2, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia (SDD-1)

Hi NesU,
Sorry i missed your question (On Thursday), it's saturday now about 7pm i'm gunna strip a US console and a PAL console and see if the boards can be swapped?!.. To be Honest i'm not much interested in running Pal snes games on a US system, since i'm sure they will pop the US snes Fuse and it's a pain in the ass changing over the fuse.
It's not a hard job but i got me a few movies to watch! I'll post a few pics later on..
Plus my Snes Collection is all american apart from a handful of Japanese and UK carts ohh yeah and one French Pal cart "Sailer moon"
:vamp:..XS
PredatorXs.. (hmm I don't know why I made an upper case X!?)
I'm on American time so I thought I could buy a pal snes with a 50/60hrz universal switch and then plug in the power with an adapter that I'll try to buy from radio shack... that way I can avoid any snap crackle pop action... I don't know but if that doesn't work I cant try to stick a US SNES board into a PAL skeleton like said... anyway who knows?
Speaking of that other thing I was mentioning. Is a PAL NES gonna turn tits up If I use it with an PAL A/c adapter = PAL~US power converter? I'm interested to know about the results, anyone have a problem with thierss?

Not sure about the PAL Nes with a US power A/C i think you might find the PAL Nes won't take the American A/C anyways, but if it does, wait for the fuse to go!...
Also i did check out the Pal Snes and US snes Boards a few mods will be needed! nothing big, but i'd say it isn't worth it in the long run! :o
you can buy A UK snes Console on ebay.co.uk that has been modded so it can run both 50 / 60mhz but it is only made to run in the UK and it has that ugly part where the Cart slot has been cut to fit a US snes cart
also for future reference : A normal UK snes power supply will also run a PAL Nes / Vise versa / The Nes UK power supply will also power a UK Snes.. I think it is slightly different in the US of A!
(Off topic) When i first started posting at DP some one mentioned they needed an A/C for there snes so i suggested if they had a Nes A/C just use that or if they find a Nes A/c in some thrift store just use that..
A few Dper's laughed at me and said it would work, if i used a hammer as well.. But i knew by the guys avatar that he was in spain @_@ something they had missed!
when the guy answered back and said yes, i have a pal snes guess how many of the hammer people replied? Non!! thats how many!! Cause they just jumped in with out thinking!! LOL (Back on topic)

Nice pics but that usa skeleton is jaundiced some.. LOL I saw an original auction years back for a silver SNES with the 50/60Mhz mod but there was no picture in the auction and the way it was described I swear I was thinking it had to be metal.. also there was a blue led instead of red with this one... I never got to see if it was a fancy official custom metal SNES @_@
However I was planning on getting a PAL SNES eventually... with PAL power supply included... Then I planned to get a converter to plug the PAL power supply into that... and then plug the converter into the usa electrical outlet... At least a seller of a modded PAL SNES tells me it is fine in theory!?
I was going to buy the PAL SNES modded anyway and if iit still is a no go then at least I could attempt that skeleton conversion mentioned here or would that be rice, because I already have a way around the ugly enlarged insert flap...
Also I used to play the shining game series on Sega with cable cord runing from the back of the tv to the rf port on the sega (the kind with the screw on end) Hapharzardly resting that little part that sticks out of the cable loosly insinde the rf hole... Ran fu*&ing great O_O

LOL I know.... I'm not going to mess around with one of my nice clean consoles LOL

this goes to prove that even yellowed consoles can be put to more good use than wearing sunglasses to hide the affect detracts from it's aesthetic potential :)
WoOw that was a relly long sentence... *inhales sharply fopllowed by sigh of relief*
