Exactly what the topic states - we're all old school here in one way or another so here's my old school contribution :) I've managed to salvage a bunch of my old BBS files and reconstructed it - it's back online in all of its original glory. It's not finished, but it's in a usable state. Of course I'm sure there's going to be bugs in it, and I'm hoping everyone finds them before I head off for vacation :)

In ways of content, there is about 15 or so online games working (LORD, Tradewars, etc). For the file area, there's a bunch of classic games - both available via FTP and classic "Zmodem" :)

Currently it's set for 4 nodes which should be plenty... and up 24/7.

So fire up your ANSI Telnet program (Hyperterminal in Windows works great, Datacomet works in OS X) and aim it towards: particlesbbs.dyndns.org or you can hit http://www.particles.org/bbs/bbs.php if you want to link to a page with the link.

I'm hoping to see some of you there.. and please, I'm up for suggestions/feedback.

I expected a bit more response from a bunch of old school people like a lot of people on here are! :)

Just to help a few people that did sign up:

1. You need to complete the Telnet Validator or you don't have access. This just sends an email to your email addy with a code it in. Enter the code, you're good.

2. You need to play Legend of the Red Dragon game #1 now that it's just starting :D

Do you have Overkill online? I spent WAY too much of my youth playing that!!

I'm adding that to my "to do" list... I'm sure I can find it :)

The night you put this topic up I tried to log in. I'll see if it validated or kept my name or what, but I haven't gotten an email saying I'm in. :O

It should drop you to a door and you hit "V" I think to Validate your account. I'll manually do it.

Update:

I've added a bunch of files/doors/message areas to the BBS since it originally went live. Here's a rundown of what's changed:

Overkill has been added by request :)
TEOS 2.00 has been put online
Global Wars has been added
LORD has been fixed (we had issues at the beginning).

Over 2000+ files have been added available for download via Zmodem or FTP

We're now a member of DOVENet for networked message bases.

We now offer USENET (non binary) and can bring in any message board that is requested and is available (non binary).

50 Classic Gaming/Classic Computer newsgroups have been added and are live, with 100s of other ones on the way.

If you've never checked out a BBS, or haven't in awhile, here's your chance :)
And besides, we need more players in Legend of the Red Dragon and Tradewars :)

There goes all my spare time!! 8-)

Can't wait to get a few minutes to check it out. Man, it's been more years than I care to count. I remember distinctly that I used my C-128 to connect at a whopping 300 baud to play this! Spent many an hour on this one!

I'll let you know when I get in!

Thanks!

Bumping an old thread - I realized I haven't spammed the forum with this in awhile!

Check out the BBS - we need more callers and stuff.

Something strange happened that I can only assume is a software issue... I logged in and was playing Tradewars, and while I was actively playing, I got the message "You've been inactive too long.", and was disconnected. I tried to log back in, and in the list of people who were connected, it showed me, listed as playing Tradewars, and then disconnected me again saying I couldn't possibly be in two places at once.

I waited about 20 minutes and logged in again. I guess Tradewars had finally given up and timed out on me. So, I started playing Tradewars again, and after about 5 minutes, the same thing happened.

Something wrong with the idle detection or something? Pretty much all I do on Particles is play Tradewars, so I'm not sure if this happens with any of the other board functions.

I'll look into it, but I haven't heard of this happening from anyone else before. I haven't changed any settings on the BBS in a few years so I'm not sure what could be causing this.

I went through the logs and it shows you being dropped at exactly 303 secs multiple times. Tradewars *does* timeout at 300 secs. Odd. I'll monitor this to see if I can figure it out. Only ideas I have is that you initially called during its maintennace period but it should have been done time you hit it.

Hmm.. without the edit feature I gotta triple post!

Actually, it dropped you 303 secs after logged in regardless of what you were doing. I've got other people staying logged in that long - it could be on your end or it could be my router settings, I'll double check it.

Bumping this up - c'mon - with the amount of old schoolers that are on this forum, you'd think that a BBS would be the place to be :)

I'm checking it out now. I never got much into the online games, but I was really into the BBS scene. I started with a Atari 800XL and 300 baud modem, moved to 1200 baud, then got a C64 with 1200 baud.
Stayed into it right up to the time I got internet access, using my 486 to access a bunch of Renegade and a few Mustang boards. FidoNet and Wildnet were my first tastes of true global mail.

Really a blast to go back to trying a standard BBS, and I'm really amazed by how much Windows and the Internet has made me "unlearn". I used to use the Pro menu's on every BBS I was on. Also remember my mom flipping out when I racked up a $60 phone bill calling a board in Philly that was outside our calling area in the burbs. The regular phone bill was like $21.
Still have boxes and boxes of Atari and C64 software on 5.25 floppy that were snagged from the underground scene.

God, what a nerd I was. Thanks for doing this, it's very cool.
Oops, I just got booted for inactivity while blabbing away here.
