Thanks to Ze_ro for last week's fun pic. I'm a sucker when it comes to 80's platformers. But now ... I'm not feeling so good. Maybe it was the colors, maybe it was the music, but all of a sudden, instead of wanting to dance around on platforms I'm in the mood to KILL KILL KILL! Especially TOYS! Fortunately for me ...

Biomechanical Toy by Gaelco is Slip81's MAME Club pick of the week!
Download: BIOMTOY.ZIP (http://members.cox.net/robohara/biomtoy.zip) (~2.8 MEG)

Bastard! This was going to my next pick! Ah well, it's such a great game, it deserves it. It's so goofy and Contra-like at the same time, I'm not sure what's not to like. It's really fast too and it the action never seems to stop much like Metal Slug.

I already reviewed this one in my MAMExpose column on this web site. To reiterate... it's a pretty decent, yet somewhat quirky run 'n gun shooter that looks like it would be more at home on an Amiga computer than in an arcade. Check out the boss at the end of the game... you probably weren't expecting anything like that!

Flack, quick heads up...

When I clicked the link for the ROM...I got a 404...appears to be a / missing right before the biomtoy part of the URL...at least, that's what I changed to fix it ;)

Great choice! Biomechanical Toy is is a great game. I can't remember how I originally found out about this one, but even from the first time I played it I thought it was excellent. Very surreal feel to the game though.

Am I the only one that gets flashbacks to the days of the Amiga while playing this?

I first found out about this game when it was featured in a MAMExpose a while back. I'm a fan of shooters like this, and this one is probably my favorite so far. While the gameplay is nothing orginal to this type of game, what puts this shooter at the top for me is the wacky theme and vibrant colors. So far the only thing I hate about the game is that part in the second level where you are pushed up by a giant fan and have to fight enemies while flying around, it always takes me a while to get through that part, but maybe it's because I'm on a keyboard. Anyway on of my MAME fave's. Current High Score: 1,234,270 on 4 credits.

Certainly not! I said as much in my MAMExpose review. I guess the folks who designed Biomechanical Toy (Zeus, a Spanish company) cut their teeth on computer games before graduating to arcade games.

I just took a full run through this game, and I have to say that's it's really not as difficult as I first thought it was. If you can resist the temptation to run straight through, and instead take things slow and shoot everything before moving on, then you'll actually do pretty well. It did take a good number of credits to beat the game, but not so much that I couldn't do it in the arcade.

The bosses are fairly cool, but frankly, they aren't very hard at all. The last boss, "Scrubby", only cost me about three lives total. If I was being more careful, I probably could have beaten him without dying at all actually.

I'm glad to see that they let you continue from where you were rather than throwing you back to the beginning of the level though. It makes it a bit too easy, but a lot less frustrating.
