View Full Version : Ultimate DDR setup...in a week???

OK, help me out here Dance Dance Revolution fans. My mission: I need to put together a DDR setup for someone that they can have in house by the end of the week. This person has no console, no money restrictions, but she does need to have this stuff by the end of the week.

So, what I'm looking for is the following, what console are we going to need (we're probably going to have to stay domestic, I can't see geting a modded console and import games by Friday), which games are the best and aren't going to be too tough to track down and which pads are going to bring us closest to the arcade expirence.

Also, if you have links to places we can order this stuff on-line, that'd be ever so helpful. Keep in mind, money isn't really a problem, but time is.

If money REALLY isn't a problem: http://www.cobaltflux.com/ but that takes 2-3 weeks. Damn.

http://www.redoctane.com/ is also awesome in a different way, and that takes 2-3 days. You can buy 2 pads + the PS2 game there too.

System? PS2. Best games? the 2 DDRMAX games. Should be easy to find.

Edit: Finally, the 2 awesomest avatars are in 1 thread.

I suppose I should change my name to Captain Downfall to post in this thread. Anyway (to elaborate on Captain Yashirio's post):

Yes, if money is not an issue at all, go for the Cobalt Flux. Heard nothing but good things about them, and while I can't quite afford it now, they seem great. I've also seen them played on, and they look very stable and comfortable. If it's too much though, you can pick up a DDRMax2 Box set at Wal-Mart, which comes with the game and a Konami Brand pad (lasted me 6 months of VERY HARD playing.. the down arrow now only works if you stomp it as hard as you can LOL ) for $60.

You can pick up DDRMax ($30-$40) and DDRMax2 ($40-$50) at any Gamestop or TRU, although I've been told by several Gamestops that they aren't getting anymore once they sell what they have. TRU has good prices though (I think they were even with the Gamestop Used prices).

Those are the best two Domestic DDR Games, and the only two domestic on the PS2 I think. If you can find it, Konamix is pretty good, but you'll probably only be able to get a used copy. It's a PSone release. Most of the PSone releases were kinda chincy though I think.

If you really wanted a killer DDR setup, then Import stuff would be the way to go, but due to the time restrictions, you're kinda limited, and I think that the above is about the best you can do within that time limit.

I am the person looking for the DDR setup.

So, here's a question I have:
What about the back diagonal arrows? I see those on some pads around too. What games use those?

Also, is Britney's Dance Beat cool (in a kitschy way even)?

What other cool DDR-type games can I get?

I'm thinking for the party I'm going to get some of those foam-y redOctane Ignition 2.0 pads, but I may consider a metal pad (and maybe someday in the future the CobaltFlux- but I'd need a new job first). ;)

I'm using my party as an excuse to finally cave in on the DDR.

Not many other DDR-type games. Old PSOne mixes of DDR use front diagonal arrows but not the back ones.

I haven't played it, but I read Britney's Dance Beat IS fun (in a kitschy way) it only has 5 songs though. DDR on the PS2 has like 70 songs per game.

The redoctane foam pads are a great buy if you don't want to go all out for the metal pads. Other DDRs I recommend are the original for PS1 and DDR KonamiX. Can't go wrong with those. :)

Definitely get 2 pads so you can play doubles also.

Not to sidetrack the thread, but how is the Xbox version of DDR Ultramix? How many songs are there? Does it compare at ALL?

F'n thread hijacker! ;)

Cap'n Wrong is currently in gaming bliss right now playing Dodonpachi on my big widescreen TV.

So, I'll update the DDR search status.

We went to EB (my first time in an EB) and bought two RedOctane pads. One is just PS2 and the other one has Xbox and PS2 connectors (although we have no Xbox).

Then we bought DDRMax2 at GameStop (wanted to check out more used options, also my first time in a GameStop) and I'll go back to EB to buy the first DDR thing and maybe get the KonamiX online.

I also bought Karaoke Revolution (I think I'll like anything cheesy with revolution in the title) and Fatal Frame 2. We bought the Eye Toy with the original games, and I'll probably get Groove later. We also bought Quix Neo and Space Channel 5. ;) and something called Irritating Stick.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I'll keep you updated after I get to play the games (if I can tear Cap'n Wrong away from Dodonpachi).

Actually, I'm serious.

Instead of creating another DDR thread, I would like to know if the Xbox one compares. I've never played DDR in my life. My sister and brother have. I'd like to sometime in the future try it out. And am curious about the Xbox one.

I'd get the PS2 versions, but it's my brothers. And I'm not going to buy it so he can keep it in his room. I'll wait until the PSTwo comes out or the PS2 drops to $50. Or at the most, $100. So until then, I'm just a curious little bee. Somehow I'm thinking the Xbox one doesn't compare at all. But I gotta ask. :)

Stick with a PS2, so you can play most of the US games

DDR (psx)
DDR Konamiz (psx)
DDR Disney Mix (good luck finding it - psx)
DDRMax (ps2)
DDRMax2 (ps2)
DDRExtreme (not yet released, ps2)

You can pick up cheap pads anywhere that sells games, a great short term solution. Upgrade to Cobalt Flux when you have the time, ignore all other metal pads as they WILL break,

Don't forget your PSX and PS2 memory cards.

I know it's not what you mean, but it money *really* is no object, one of my buds walked into an arcade, offered to buy their fairly new 2 player machine, dropped 3500 in cash and now owns an arcade setup. Can't beat that, can you?

Funny you should mention that...the quote of the evening has been "when you set up your arcade we are so getting a DDR machine." :)

The Red Octane Pads are pretty good, except my feets are a little too big. When I stand in the center, I'm still triggering either the up or down arrow. Hmm...

Of course the otherside of this is I dont think I'm ever going to see my PS2 again. Yeah, between DDR and Karoke Revolution, I think the Wench has made a new best friend. LOL

Basically any DDR is good if you're a beginner. If I remember correctly it's lacking in the overall challenge department though.

Gamespot's review said the Xbox version is the best one yet. It looks a little better, has four-player support and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, although that last thing might not matter if you don't have a receiver to connect it to. Also, you'd need to get one of the AV packs and an optical audio cable to hook it up to take advantage of DD, but then again you wouldn't need a memory card like you would with the PS2. Also, if money isn't really an object, you could set up a Live account to play online and/or purchase additional songs for a buck each.

Then again, with the PS2 you could get more DDR games, so I don't know what to recommend.

Shame Konami won't make more for the Xbox. Do they not have plans to continue? It's not fair the PlayStation gets all the DDR fame.

I'll have to look into Xbox DDR in the near future. The game used is um.. I forget. Either $25 or $35 at GS. Not sure what the pad is.

Of course, I fear I will such extremely bad at it. But if I could at least try it once, I'd feel my life is complete. LOL

Or maybe I should just stick to Donkey Konga. Which I will probably suck at too.
