My internet went down last night and the pc in my room's currently out of commision but I was really in the mood for some quiet time alone in my room with a computer so I dug my brothers old lap top out of my trunk, and when I say old I mean old. It's running windows 3.1 and makes my xbox look portable.
*excuse the run on sentances and lack of capitals I'm on the phone*
Anyway I ended up playing the original Sim City most of the night as it's the only game installed on the machine, but it was kind of fun and I'd like to put the system to a good use. So any one know of some good pc games from that era?
Edit cheaked. 386 with 640k memory... no sound card just internal PC speaker so that rules out games with speech (I have no mouth... which would need a CD rom anyway).

doom, wolfenstein, flashback, dragon's lair (cd), warcraft, warcraft 2 (dos version if you can find it) There are DOS versions of all of those so they should run fine, but you'll have to boot to dos. SimCity 2 was alot better and would probably run on that machine as well. hard to know w/o exact specs...if it is a 386 good luck...if it's 486 w/ 8 MB of ram you are in luck. There's also dos emulators.

I'm under the impression it's a 386... no CD drive though. Gonna have to play floppies on it. Actually hold on... I'll run up stairs and take a look at the specs.

some of the games MAY be a little too hefty for it...I'd be really surprised if it could not run the afore mentioned. Just start grabbin the games and seeing how they run. God I wish I had your old laptop. I would kill a man to play those old games again.

I think if it can run SimCity, it should be able to run XCOM UFO Defense, which is a damn good game. You should also throw on Secret of Monkey Island and Ultima IV.

oh defenitely =). Any lucasart game needs to be played, and yes the ultima series, ESPECIALLY 6. The best of all of them IMHO. And magic candle series as well as:
Might & Magic III: Isles Of Terra
This game is utter bliss.
Edit: Geez, the flood of memories continues. Be sure to play:
Zeliard
Ok, that should be good for now.

The "gold box" AD&D games should run on that setup. Great games all. Death Knights of Krynn was my favorite.
Lightspeed, a space sim by Microprose, hails from that era. Kinda dated now, but still fun.
Crystal Caverns: Troubles with Twibbles by Apogee is a good one too. Puzzle/platform action.
There's a shareware Win3.x game called Castle of the Winds that I recommend. Really simplistic RPG, but I like it.

Shadowcaster, if you can find it, should be good.
That's an FPS though, not sure if that's your sort of game. It is pretty darn nice looking, especially for the time.
Eh. Lots of Dragon Warrior-viewpoint games (Eye of the Beholder 1-3, though 3 is a letdown, most say, and Dungeon Hack, those come right to mind from the Forgotten Realms AD&D line)

Check out the Commander Keen games. They all had Shareware versions available, and are fun little platformers to play through.
Also, if you never played them, check out The Incredible Machine 1 and 2. In those games you build wacky inventions to acomplish a task.
If you like flying games, I believe the first X-Wing and TIE Fighter games ran okay on a 386. So did all the early Wing Commander games.
I could probably come up with another million or two ...

Civilization II (not sure if it will run on your computer)
Infocom games

I could just list all the games I think might be good, but I think I've already done so in the "Vintage Computing" forum. I believe there's a thread in there that focuses on a lot of great old DOS games.
I would check out http://www.the-underdogs.org - they have lots of old stuff. I personally would check out Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye.

I'm going to have to throw a ditto on any lucasarts or sierra games. I just recently played through maniac mansion, the nes version which is basically the same, and I own several other Lucasart and Sierra games. I think the must haves are King's quest V and VI, Any Quest for Glory, Any Space Quest, as well as Sam 'n Max, Maniac Mansion, and Indiana Jones. Other than that, Dune II is so addictive, you must play all of these games.

It's become my current quest to get Quest for Glory 2 on this machine... thank you for the suggestions. If the game doesn't play I'll have to try some others. (:
As for FPS... not going to happen. They give me severe motion sickness.
