so just a heads up to everyone... this game arrived at most stores today....

i've played through the first 5 levels now, and let me say... wow. puzzle games like this just suck me in. the graphic detail is amazing for the GBA, and it's an all-out blast playing.

and i probably would be through more levels if you didn't have to get past the 30,000 point threshold per level to get a "star" i'm not even sure what getting the stars does yet... but i'm sure it's something cool =) i've had to replay a few of the levels now.

anyway.... if you're even remotely interested in this title... i suggest you go pick it up. immediately.

Once I get the other 3 GBA games I want, I think I'll have a go at MvsDK. I've been wanting another puzzler for my GBA. I'll probably get Puzzle Fighter first though. :)

super puzzle fighter = my favorite GBA game... period. it was good on psx... it's perfect on GBA. it's my belief that it is absolutely the most perfect portable game. but enough of this....

i'll sau again that mario vs. donkey kong kicks ass major ass... can't wait to plow through some more of it tonight

I love the original DK 94. I would have settled for a complete straight port of that. But this is cool too. Can't wait to buy it! MAYBE Friday. Depends. I already have one set aside. It's on sale at Kmart for $26.99 this week.

Is this game a slight upgrade of DK94, a major overhaul, of a brand-new game. The p/reviews I've read aren't too clear on that.

From what I saw in the demo, the only similarity is Mario and his moves.

NintendoMan
05-26-2004, 09:07 AM
I think that is the only similarity. Mario has alot of his same moves, which I think is GREAT! At least from what I have read and seen. I am picking up this game in about 2 hours when the store opens.

well, just managed to get through the first world with getting high scores on each level...

some of mario's moves that i've encountered so far are (that i remember off hand)...

throwing garbage can and shy guys and throwing them upwards to get on to a higher platform.

double and triple jump, with each jump gaining more altitude... a la mario 64

handstand to protect yourself from falling objects.

also, level 1-7 is the first level in which you lead your "toy marios" around the level.... i got high score on this one first try, but i can see how this type of puzzle will get difficult real quick... not looking forward to this one in later worlds. donkey kong in 1-8 was also cake... don't really know what to expect from him in the later worlds.

Just played it today and I have to say this game rocks! It's like taking Mario 64 and slapping it in Donkey Kong and adding some new elements. Im amazed at how well done this is.

Pick this up today, I recommend it highly!

Thank you Nintendo, it's been ten long years since Donkey Kong hit the original Gameboy (aka Donkey Kong '94) but was this ever worth the wait! And there's even a second quest too!

NintendoMan

FInally picked it up this morning and all I can say is AWESOME! I have only been able to play the first couple of levels but the moves from Mario64 that mario can do in this game is genius!
RECOMMENDED TO EVERYONE!!!

(Will play more throughout the week and through weekend when I am less busy)

Yay! I can't wait until Friday. I will be getting it. I already have it put aside along with Spongebob Vol. 2 just because.

Question. How many levels are there? The old game had a whole lot. Some worlds had 8 levels while some had 12. And there was a battle every 4. With the mini battles just being Mario having to get to DK and the last one in a world being a battle with DK. From the commercial, the main battles are there, but are the mini ones as well? How many worlds and how creative are they? The old game had a City, Forest, Boat, Plane, Jungle, Desert. Also, is there a way to go back to already beaten levels?

I hope after the success of this one, they bring back the old one remade with the name "Mario vs. Donkey Kong Zero". I'd love both on the GBA.

Six worlds with eight levels each. It breaks down like this.

Levels 1 though 6 are two part levels. In the first part, you must find the key and take it to the door, ala DK '94. In the 2nd part (in reality it's basically another level) you simply have to make your way to the Mario Toy and pick it up.

Level 7 is a Lemmings style puzzle where you have to get as many of the six Mario Toys you've collected to the toy box as possible. I don't care for these levels, but then again I hated Lemmings.

Level 8 is a DK fight, which is basically a boss fight.

There are six worlds. Each world has eight levels. So that's 48 Levels.

BUT, six of those eight levels are two part. So it's really like 84 levels.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!! The game has a full sized 2nd quest in it. So it has at least (depending on how you look at it) a minimum of 96, or a high figure 168.

AND, AND, AND! It's got unlockable 'ultra hard' levels. I don't know how many, but it's still cool.

So yeah, lots of levels. Although the game is a tad bit too easy. I don't care personally... like Donkey Kong '94 it wasn't about difficulty. It might be a puzzle game, but it's not the type of game where I want to sit and think too long. If I'm up for a Brain Teaser then I'll play Puzznic, Lolo, Pokemon Puzzle, or something similar. As a action game with mild puzzles, it totally equals Donkey Kong '94. This is my choice so far for Game of the Year 2004.

This is my choice so far for Game of the Year 2004.

I don't know about that...but the game is very, very good. Better than Mario and Luigi, which got on my nerves when the special moves started to get a bit too intense.

And to whoever mentioned the graphics - it even looks good on the Game Boy Player (on my GameCube). So obviously Nintendo did something magical to it.

Hopefully, the new Mario game for the DS will have this same sort of feel. Hopefully.

(Oh, by the way - Sonic Advance 3 is also very good, but not quite on the same level as this.)

I got this last night and have enjoyed what I've done so far.

The only thing I don't like is that pressing B makes Mario act like he's going to pick something up. This probably isn't a problem for most of you, but I tend to hold down B when I'm paying a 2-D Mario game.

No, I totally get that. Did the same thing about three or four times. 8-)

Actually, I CAN'T WAIT now! After the whole description of the level layouts.

Tomorrow.. IS IT HERE YET??

Damn, I payed 34.99 for my copy. I do have a somewhat loyalty to the place I reserve my games though. i have reserved mine at the same place since around '97-98. THey tend to always get the game in like 1-2 days before anyone store around here, so don't really care about the extra coulple of bucks.

ok i'm having some problems already... i'm in level 4-3... i have no rpblem beating the level at all, but i need to get High Score to get the Star... and i swear to christ, it's impossible. was anyone able to manage this? i've tried a couple different thing... including not getting the presents... and i always seem to end up shy by 3 thousand points.

Hmmm, now this is a dilemma. Since I am about to finish Metroid Zero, I was going to buy Super Mario Bros. 3: Super Mario Advance 4. Now, from reading these comments, I am thinking of getting the Mario vs. Donkey Kong... What to do?

I got it yesterday too and I love it. And playing through to get the stars do make it longer... So far, the only true similarity with DK 94, aside from Mario's handstand and wire-spinning moves, is the first fight against DK (which is the level where DK is standing on a higher platform and Mario is below him and must pick up garbage cans and throw them at him). Otherwise, it's more of a sequel to DK 94 than a remake of it.

A lot of the enemies also make a return. Or at least "Toy" versions of them Like the monkey whose tail you hang from in the first, he's a toy Cymbal monkey in this one. Neat. But sadly, he doesn't scream when you are holding onto his tail and a rope at the same time. I loved that part. Guess I'm just really really um.. maniacal?

Lady Jaye

Talking of that monkey enemy character: I find that the controls for hanging on to its tail have been tweaked for Mario vs DK (I used to have some difficulty catching its tail in DK 94).

I just picked it up at Best Buy for $20 using the Gamer's $5 off coupon. It's a great, addicitive game. I still like Wario Ware, but this is definately in my top 3 for the GBA.

well, it took me two very excruciating days of frustration, but i FINALLY got a high score in level 4-3. not a wasted second.... i had the top score by a mere 100 points. good luck to all of you on getting a high score on this level... it's brutal.

My copy arrived today. First three worlds busted so far all with stars. Really enjoying this so far, though that's a given on how much I liked DK94. Must dig that out and have another play I think (wonder how much that would be worth on eBay complete now?!).

mayhem and/or Jasaco:

let me know if you have probems getting the Star in level 4-3, since both of you are in the ghost mansion now... i want to see if i'm just plain retarded, or if others are having the same problem. it took me for-fucking-ever.

Believe it or not, that's the only one I didn't even get all the presents on. I tried to beat it for a while and devided to skip the present for the sake of just getting to the exit to try later.

Heh.

Anyway, this was asked in the AA version of this thread, and I'm a might curious myself. The manual says NOTHING about it. But what is Game Boy Player mode? What does it do ? I saw no difference between it and GBA mode on either the GBA or the GBP.

What am I missing? It's not even in the manual! That surprises me.

Lady Jaye

isn't it just screen resolution that's better on the GBP so that the image doesn't look too bad on a TV?

Well Todd, I have both, and got SMB3: SMA 4 Last Oct. when it was released so definately recommend getting both. But if you can only get one I would get SMB3 first, probably just because it's been out longer but it's a better game to me only because SMB3 is in my top 3 fav. games of ALL TIME.
But with that said, I say get Mario Vs. Donkey Kong second, but as soon as you can. It's an AWESOME game as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree with all the positive comments on the this game above. I would add that I really LOVE the title music track. What a great idea to mix the Donkey Kong Counrty Theme and the Super Mario Theme!! And Jazz it up to boot!

One question . . .

I think I remember reading that at one point, Nintendo was going to allow the player to build levels on the Gamecube and then transfer them into the cart. Anybody remember anything about this?

Yes, I believe there is/was a pciture of the GCN part on IGN at one point. I'd find it but I'm being lazy right now.
