Haha, I imagine mine is a lot like yours (in size, that is). When I'm feeling a bit better and when I got the time, I'll try to list mine.

Play Star Ocean: The Second Story already. :P You won't regret it (at least I hope not o_O ).

Holy crap that's a backlog? You sure you didn't just copy and paste a list of RPGs for each system? :D :P

I have no RPG backlog, BTW.

Xantan the Foul
05-26-2004, 08:53 AM
Yeah, that's just my backlog, you can see my full collection (with the games I've beaten marked as such) at:

http://users.ign.com/collection/gustalph

I work alot, so I've got the money to collect the games, just less time to play them.

What RPG's HAVE you beaten?! :)

I think my backlog of RPG's is about 3-4 games long. I've beaten just about every RPG available stateside that didn't suck for the PS2, Gamecube (LOL), Gameboy advance, SNES, NES, PS1.

I suppose you can add the N64 in there, I beat every RPG except that one, what was it? Hero 64 or something?

Okay, here goes. These are the RPGs I own that I either haven't beaten or haven't played much at all. This is including strategy games and Zelda-style games just as the other lists have:

NES:

Deadly Towers
Dungeon Magic
Shingen the Ruler
Star Tropics
Star Tropics 2

Game Boy Color:

Heroes of Might and Magic
Heroes of Might and Magic 2
Metal Walker

Game Boy Advance:

Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire 2
Golden Sun
Zelda no Densetsu (I've beaten the US NES version, of course, but I haven't played through the Famicom Mini version yet.)

Genesis:

Beyond Oasis
Landstalker
Super Hydlide
Sword of Vermilion

Super Nintendo/Super Famicom:

Arcana
Brain Lord
Drakkhen
Eye of the Beholder
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3
Illusion of Gaia
Lufia & The Fortress of Doom
Bahamut Lagoon
Dragon Quest 6
Feda: The Emblem of Justice
Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo
Hiouden: Mamonotachi to no Chikai
Tengai Makyou Zero

Nintendo 64:

Hybrid Heaven
Ogre Battle 64
Paper Mario
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

PlayStation:

Alundra
Azure Dreams
Beyond the Beyond
Breath of Fire 3
Breath of Fire 4
Brigandine
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy Collection (Japanese 4, 5, and 6)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Legend of Legaia
Monster Collection
Parasite Eve
Persona
Saga Frontier 2
Suikoden
Suikoden 2
Tales of Destiny 2
The Legend of Dragoon
Threads of Fate
Wild Arms
Wild Arms 2
Xenogears

Dreamcast:

Elemental Gimmick Gear

GameCube:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (played OoT on N64, of course, but not on GameCube nor have I played the Master Quest)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

That's about as complete as I can get it. I left off some games because I questioned if they deserved to be on this list (genre-wise, that is). There are also some games unaccounted for on my game collection page, so I'm sure there are some missing ones.

I planned on putting a halt on purchasing this summer and revving up the playing, but that's not turning out so hot.

Playstation:
Alundra
Alundra 2
Arc the Lad: Collection
Brave Fencer Musashi
Breath of Fire III
Breath of Fire IV
Brigandine
Dragon Warrior VII
Final Fantasy Origins (beat 1, need to beat 2)
Grandia (as you can see, currently playing. 32 hours in, just about finished with it)
Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth
Legend of Dragoon (GH) (this game blows, I don't think I'll ever play it)
Legend of Mana
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete
Ogre Battle
SaGa Frontier
SaGa Frontier II
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Threads of Fate
Vagrant Story
Valkyrie Profile
Vandal Hearts

Shadow Hearts
Summoner
Summoner 2
Wild Arms 3

GCube:
Skies of Arcadia: Legends
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles

SNES:
Act Raiser
Illusion of Gaia
Populous
Secret of Evermore
There's a lot more, but I don't ever plan on playing them.

GBA:
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Golden Sun
Golden Sun II
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Sword of Mana
Tactics Ogre: The Knights of Lodis
This list is growing far far too fast.

PC:
Morrowind (I'm right at the end, I just need to go pound Dagoth Ur and it's over, but I don't think I ever will, and f the expansions)
Star Wars: KotOR

And that's that. I really want to plow through some of these this summer, but I'm starting to get more into action and adventure games... need a break from turned based mayhem. And as you can see, I've been keeping up fairly well, only 2 FF's I haven't beat, and a large chunk of PS1 RPG's are missing... some because i don't have them, but mostly because I've finished them.

I too planned on curtailing the buying of games until I had at least cleared the backlog. But with La Pucelle, Crystal Chronicles, Front Mission 4, and more either here on or on the horizon it looks like that plan will fall through. Anyway, here's my backlog, which probably contains far too many games that I own but have never even played.

Dragon Warrior 4

Mine's not that bad. We can get long snowy winters so it's common for me to stash a backlog of winter games. My backlog of RPGs are:

N64

Quest 64....which I've started
Paper Mario

NES

Crystalis
Faxanadu
Star Tropics
Star Tropics 2 Zoda's Revenge
Dragon Warrior
Exodus Ultima....won't play it 'cos it's sealed.

PSX

The Arc The Lad Collection (WD box set)
Vanguard Bandits

Cube

Tales Of Symphonia
Crystal Chronicles.....started

PS2

The Bard's Tale....nearly done
FFX....second run through, this time to 100%
Demon Stone....started

I've also got Wind Waker and Majoras, but I don't count Zeldas as RPGs. I also have dungeon crawlers that are always "in progress".

Can anyone offer input on WHY they have so many RPG's in posession that they haven't played?

I mean a lot of the ones listed are still going for $30-$50 new or used. If you have 40 other RPGS that you haven't played, why buy more?

Question #2 - Why are you buying RPG's at all? Some people have listed so many I really do wonder which (if any) they HAVE beaten. Not flaming, or arguing or being judgmental, just curious. I don't play certain types of games, but I just don't buy them :)

A LOT...just the unplayed PS1 RPGs are around 30, and Saga Frontier 2, Vanguard Bandits, Shadow Madness, and FF Tactics are still shrinkwrapped.

Can anyone offer input on WHY they have so many RPG's in posession that they haven't played?

I mean a lot of the ones listed are still going for $30-$50 new or used. If you have 40 other RPGS that you haven't played, why buy more?

That's not a RPG specific question, it is a 'why collecting' question. If you like a genre, you go for it, that doesn't mean that you have to play them all. It is about the option to play them when you like to do it.

I wait, and I buy them relatively cheap. I don't see a reason to buy a Phantom Brave or La Pucelle if they are still $40. I bought just two days ago Champions of Norrath for $20 (new) or a Drakan for $8 (used).

Question #2 - Why are you buying RPG's at all? Some people have listed so many I really do wonder which (if any) they HAVE beaten. Not flaming, or arguing or being judgmental, just curious. I don't play certain types of games, but I just don't buy them

I've beaten a lot, and I like to play them because they are the most story and character driven of all the genres; I believe stories are important for videogames because gameplay is basically a journey through an artificial world ready to explore and/or to transform. RPGs are one of the genres which deliver in this regard, and they try to achieve a high identification level of the gamer with the presented artificial playground on your shelf.

Other genres I'm not interested in (like traditional sports games and FPS) I don't buy at all, unless offered really, really, really cheap and exceptionally good. :) But otherwise, everything goes, from adventure to schmups.

17 RPGS in one year is pretty good if you ask me.

Oh and some RPGs just don't interest me.

Xantan the Foul

It is just a collector thing. I like to have alot of games, and RPGs are my favorite genre.

I've beaten about 40% of my total collection, I just work alot, and spend most of it on games and books.

Haha, lets face it guys, we've got a snowballs chance in hell of ever playing through these things. I think i made it through maybe a dozen total games last year, and only 3 or 4 were RPG's.

I've got a hard enough time making it through a 15 hour FPS or Action game. I may never get through another RPG again :(

Updated the list after a really long time, and I still think it's longer than it was before...

Yeah, that's just my backlog, you can see my full collection (with the games I've beaten marked as such)

That's a pretty cool feature that you can put a tab on what you've beaten! Also all the information they have in the columns with game rating, system, and estimated value of collection is nice. I should check if I registered to that site (can't remember) and unlock that little area.

As for my backlog, it's a pretty long list. All the games I've been buying lately plus finally getting into Summer break I can begin playing all those games and watch all my animes. It'll take quite awhile but I'll get some good gameplay in. I won't list those games on backlog, but if you look at my game collection list, it's most every game on there. :/

Q1. To have it now. It's always nice to own a game and not worry about getting it later down the line, when it's possible the game might spike in price and demand.

Q2. It's that old romancized thought that ONE day (preferably a hot sticky summer night or an innocent winter's day) we will sit down and enjoy an RPG quest like no other.

In 2003 I disliked RPGs, but convinced myself to buy all the "recommended" RPGs on Saturn. I still have yet to play through one, but I have no regrets in buying any of them. One day I will get to some of them, others I may never get to.

So what? Then, I can sell it. RPGs seem to stay constant in price so you can always get your $$ back if not more.

But yeah, people just like to own things w/o worrying about getting them later.

Okay, I still had an account on there with about 100 games already saved on my "owned" list. The thing I remember now while trying to add more is that it's taking FOREVER to add crap with the +add and searching feature. Is there a quicker way to just add massive amounts of games at once without all the BS of it even having just 10 options per screen? Blah!

It didn't used to be that way, you used to just be able to bring up an entire list of games for a system and just check the box for each game you own and click "add" at the bottom.

Then IGN decided to "upgrade" the lists. This meant clunkier, no borders between systems, and up until recently you couldn't even have them in alphabetical order if you sorted by system. I had a pretty strong topic complaining about it with lots of feedback from other users backing me up, but then they made that whole board for "IGN Insiders only" so now I can't even view the topic that I created

Alot of the games that i've yet to play i've picked up cheap, or bought them ASAP because RPGs have a habit of getting pricey.

Easier to pick them up now and put them in the backlog, then having to take the time to track them down later.
