View Full Version : Who would bring THAT to a thrift store?!?
Ever find something at a thrift store that made you think "why would someone give this away?" I'm not talking about ultra-rare Atari games or things of that sort, because that's easy to explain. Someone just didn't realise it was valuable. They were probably thinking "who would want this old piece of junk?"
Yesterday I stopped in a Salvation Army and found a Gamecube Gameboy Player that appears to be brand new. :hmm:

Adult diapers frequently appear at my local thrift shop. One day about twelve big packages of them came in... it was like the Depends factory exploded or something.

Although that seems odd, it really isn't--Target stores (And others I would guess) donate unsold items to thrift shops and I believe they write them off on taxes.
I always think it's weird when I see people's own home video for sale...

Um.. I guess it's cool that you bought them off the internet, but now you've piqued my curiousity as to why you wanted to buy them in the first place?

I was at the local Goodwill sometime last year. I was looking for the normal VG related stuff, but I saw a nice looking golf bag and I had a friend in need of a new one. It was $20 but it was a nice leather tour bag. I took it to him later that evening and while we chatted, he cleaned it up. In one of the zipper compartments was about 5 pairs of thongs. LOL LOL At that point he threw away the panties and sold the bag in his garage sale later that summer!

I've never given a great deal of thought to the question in this topic, for the fact that some people do, in fact, bring valuable things to the thrifts without being aware of what they're letting go is the impetus for my (at a minimum) weekly trips to the bins.
But I do have a theory: It could be, as it relates to VG stuff, due in part to certain parents who actually carry out the threat to :bad-words: "get rid of all those damn games one day" if the kid's grades don't improve, etc. They can't bring themselves to just outright throw the stuff away, nor can they give it to someone they know because the kid might angle to get it all back. So one day, acting quickly while junior is at school, off to the thrifts or pawns it goes. Case in point: once at Goodwill I found both a complete NES top-loader and SNES in the same box for $10. This was back in mid-1996, so they were still comparatively recent systems. I could only imagine this to be the result of some sort parental backlash.
Just my theory, at any rate.

Sounds like a scene from Family Guy...
Auctioneer: "And now, we have a pair of panties confiscated from a prostitute."
Quagmire: "Forty dollars!"
Auctioneer: "She had numerous sexually transmitted diseases..."
Quagmire: "Uh, thirty dollars."
Auctioneer: "...and she wet herself when she was arrested."
Quagmire: "Fifty dollars!"
