So what's the deal with this game, anyway? I have the Saturn version, and although I do WANT to like it, I can't because the miserable bastard computer opponents cheat all the time. The cheating is so incredibly obvious that I can frequently predict the outcome of my dice rolls... just think of the worst possible outcome depending on your current situation, and nine times out of ten, that's exactly what will happen. Here seems to be the rules the game follows when handling the dice:

1. If the player is low on money and desperately needs to reach the castle in the center of the screen, give him a 1 or a 2.

2. If the player is approaching a computer controlled square worth more mana than he can afford, give him a roll that will force him to land on that square.

3. If the player uses Flight to increase the number of dice he can throw in his turn, make sure both dice come up as 1s or 2s so he STILL won't go anywhere.

4. If the computer opponent is low on money, or just happens to feel like making it across the board in record speed, give him the largest roll possible.

5. If the computer opponent happens to be near a player controlled square worth a great deal of mana, give him a roll that will safely whisk him past that space (ignore this rule if the computer opponent happens to have a card that can mutilate whatever is currently occupying said space).

6. If the computer opponent uses Flight to increase the number of dice he can throw in his turn, make sure the total is AT LEAST 12.

Culdcept so blatantly and obviously stacks the deck against the player that I can no longer bear to play it. It doesn't help matters that the computer opponent gloats whenever he gets a good roll or steals your territory, which if you haven't been paying attention earlier is ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Is the Playstation 2 version of the game this aggravating? I just have to know.

Sadly that's what some developers call "challenge". :/ The sad thing is it's so easy to just create a random range for a certain amount, and then each number of the die has an equal chance of getting rolled.

First off, Aussie2B's sig makes baby Jesus cry.

Secondly, I beat the PS2 version in 2 weeks. The AI does these tricks on PS2 as well but they're hardly stacking the deck that large if you have a good strategy. What is your deck comprised of? Do you bother healing/using forced roll spells/moving creatures?

I noticed all these things too but it's just a method to force you to come up with some strategy. That way you can't coast through the game on dumb luck. *shrugs*

So the game DOES cheat! I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!!!

Er, anyway. Right now I'm still working with a pretty wimpy deck... basically the game's starter deck along with a couple dozen cards I managed to win from my opponents (oddly, you still get cards if you LOSE, softing the blow of a humiliating defeat). I couldn't give you a definitive list, but I can say that I have a wide selection of fire and air monsters. I also have some Holy Word cards (1 and 6), Binding Mist (freezes monsters, making it impossible for them to fight), Cure, Holy Grail, and some shields and weapons.

The trick right now, I suppose, is trying to figure out which of the cards is worth hanging on to and which ones should be flushed from my deck. It would also help if the game were in English rather than Japanese, because each of the monsters has a special ability and I don't really understand what many of them do. For instance, one monster card is a picture of a man looking inside a glowing treasure chest. When you place it on the board, it looks like a little pink glob. It has almost no strength points and is easily dispatched... however, I keep thinking that it has some alternate use.

There's a FAQ online for the Playstation version of Culdcept, called Culdcept Expansion. It's similar to the Saturn game but with more cards. I've been trying to get by with that one but I honestly think a pictorial guide done in HTML would be more helpful. That way, you could look up each card and know EXACTLY what it does.
