I was in Detroit this past weekend caring for a friend who had arthroscopic surgery. I went out Saturday morning hit some garage sales and found some decent stuff.
Anyway, I found this block sale which had about 20 families participating. I picked up a Nintendo and a Genny with some commons fairly cheap. I noticed a man and woman buying misc crap and bargaining heaviliy and figured they were professional sellers. My parents, who did this themselves for a living, always referred to them as pickers. An unwritten Picker's rule is that you never F up someone else's deal. They can actually become violent about it as this is their livelihood.
Anyway, I spotted the prize of the block sale. It was a Bally's Astrocade with about 15 boxed games. I've never had one and started salivating. LOL
I asked the owner how much he wants and he replies $50. I ask him if it works and he says he doesn't know. So, I offer $40 and he pauses to consider it.
So, the dumbass picker pipes up and tells the guy that I'm asking about buying VG's at every garage sale so I must be a professional and that I'm trying to screw him. He says he knows that system is rare and is worth at least $200.
I told him that I buy games for my own collection (which is true, I've actually never sold one yet) and to mind his own business.
So, the owner says that he can't accept my offer. I said fine, I'll pay $50 and he says it's no longer for sale.
Well, I went against my pacifistic philosophy and followed the couple around to 5 sales and did the same thing to them at 3 of them. I explained to the owners that these people were going to take their stuff and sell it on ebay for much more.
After the first time I did it he threatened to call the cops for harassment and I offered to let him use my cell phone to do it.
Anyway, he gave me a vague threat after the 5th house and finally took off.
2 wrongs don't make a right, but don't some of these people just piss you off?

Kudos to you. I would have done the same thing, if I didn't lack the marbles to do so. :)

That sucks so much  My dad sold on ebay full time for a couple years (and still does it on a part time basis) and I usually go out with him to the flea markets. One of the unwritten rules I've noticed is you don't butt in on another persons' offers.
This reminds me of a time my mom had a yard sale. We had a bunch of boxes of old bottles we were selling for a buck a piece. One guy was going through a box and there was this woman standing over him and watching. Suddenly she darts her hand in the box and next thing we knew they were both holding onto the same bottle. A couple of words were thrown back and forth and a little tugging and neither would let go. Finally, my mom went over and took the bottle and said neither of them would get it LOL The woman stormed off (leaving the stuff she was going to buy), the guy just smiled and said that was fair to him. I can't believe how childish some people act.

What a prick! I could kinda understand if he wanted it for himself, but to spite you just for the sake of it shows the mark of an almighty asshole.

I lament that it didn't get physical. Pacifism be damned, you could have whupped his ass! (Strictly in self defense.) Considering your martial arts background.

What an asshat. I like the way you handled that 8-)
On a side note, I'm kinda surprised I didn't see you out there. I hit up two fairly large block sales on Saturday morning too. Were you near Flat Rock again?

man thats low down, who wins in that situation? he didnt get the games and neither did you :( luckily pickers rarely seek out gaming stuff and usually keep their distance. i had a guy jump me like that once over some jadite plates, luckily the seller was cool and just brushed him off. at my main flea i know the other game hunters and we mostly work by a code: first person to lay hands on it gets it, tell the other guys about everything you've passed over. everyone goes for the lowest price rather that overbidding the other collectors. we just turn down the overpriced junk, its a good system too since once they've noticed that all three of the game geeks arent biting they'll accept a reasonable offer the next time. using this tactic we talked a boxed ADAM down from $100 to $40.

Yeah, this block sale was on the same street (across the freeway tho) that Mejier and Home Depot are on. I can't remember the name as I'm not there all that often.

Personally, if I saw somebody buy an Astrocade with 15 games for $50 I'd congratulate them (I probably wouldn't have enough money on me to pick it up anyhow LOL ).
Damn...sweet revenge huh?

Haha, I would've never had the balls for that. They got what they deserved, though. What, people aren't allowed to seriously pursue their hobbies anymore without everyone assuming they're professional sellers? :/

What that was pacifistic, Ghandi would approve. (:

Good grief, what a fantastic bunch of turds. I can't believe that people would go to garage sales just to ruin other prospective buyers' deals. To someone who's not a video game collector, $40 is a more than fair price for an Astrocade and games. Hell, I bought mine for 1/10th that price, with everything from the box to the warranty to even the Christmas card that was included with the unit when it was given as a gift, and the previous owner didn't grumble too much about the price. He just wanted it out of the house, which is why people have garage sales in the first place.
The next time you see those (nose) pickers, give 'em a wedgie for me, would you?

Good grief. I can't believe asshats like that actually exist (not you, Cue, the other folks). Nothing better to do than screw up your business, rh? Sheesh. I've been debating visiting my local big flea market to look for some deals as such, but if this is repsentative of the ilk one finds therein I'd just as soon stick to the thrifts. Somebody tries that shite on me and they'll be knee-deep in their own blood (plainly I'm not a pacifist).

I hate people who butt into other people’s transactions like that. Good job driving them off. :D For some reason I am reminded of the end of Glengarry Glen Ross:
“You want to learn the first rule (of business?) you’d know if you ever spent a day in your life…you never open your mouth till you know what the shot is…(pause)…you fucking child” --Roma (after having his big deal shot because someone butted in)

(slight off-topic, sorry) Glengarry Glen Ross...Man, this has got to be one of the most quotable movies of the last 20 years. Hey, CueWarrior, you need to have some GGR lines handy next time you run into pickers.
"Oh, what a BIG MAN you are! Hey lemme buy you a pack of gum. I'll show you how to chew it." LOL
