View Full Version : Pretty fly for a GameCube buy

Earlier this morning, I headed down to the pawn shop to pick up a couple of GameCube games. I had my eye on Zelda: The Wind Waker and Metroid Prime in particular, but it had been a few days since the games arrived and I wasn't sure that they'd still be there by the time I received my paycheck.

Fortunately, when I finally arrived at the pawn shop, both games were still there waiting for me. Better yet, the manager made good on her promise to sell the games for 25% off the marked price. That made both games $15 a piece.

There was only one problem... how would I save my games? I needed a memory card to make any significant progress in them, but the combined cost of Metroid and Zelda already pushed me to my spending limit. My only remaining option was to ask the manager to include a free card with my purchase, but I knew that would be pressing my luck.

I swallowed my pride and asked anyway. Surprisingly, the manager agreed and placed a tiny memory card in my outstretched hand. She didn't seem happy about just giving the card away, but it was clear that the woman was tired (of me? Of her job? Of her life? That wasn't clear) and didn't feel like arguing over a square of plastic roughly the size of a quarter.

After I'd left the store, I more carefully examined the memory card, expecting it to be one of Nintendo's ill-conceived and rather restrictive 51 block cards. My eyes bulged when I flipped it over and discovered that it was much larger, weighing in at a respectable 251 blocks.

So I left the pawn shop with two high profile GameCube titles and a high capacity memory card, all for the low, low price of thirty bucks. Yeah, I'd say that I made out pretty well in that deal.

Thanks to you, that damn Offspring song is stuck in my head. LOL

Anyways, congrats on that nice deal. My best Gamecube buys (or at least my favorite) would be the used and complete copies of Super Smash Bros. Melee and Metroid Prime I bought at $10 each.

Pretty cool..

Too bad the 251 is so last month. ;)

They're coming out with a 1019. That's more Memory card than anyone will ever need! LOL I still haven't filled MY 251.

Try playing MVP Baseball 2004 on the Cube. I bought a brand-new 251 card for it.... Well, the 251 card isn't enough for a full save of the game! I'll need one of those new cards just for that game!

Samething with NHL 2004. It's a shame, ehh 2003 is better.

I wouldn't mind so much if EA had indicated the correct number of blocks required (or at least the amount needed for a full dynasty save). But noooo, if you look at the back of MVP Baseball 2004, you'd think that a 251-block card would be enough. So, note to anyone interested by the game but who don't have it yet: on the GameCube, you need the new 1,000-block card to save your dynasty.

thats crazy that they make a game knowing full well that most ppl have 251 memory cards and thats it....and the game save doesnt fit. thats just poor program design by the makers of that game.

All sports games are stupidly large for the season and dynasty saves. NCAA Football 2003 for PS2 takes up like 5 meg of the 8. Ridiculous.

No wonder GC sports titles are selling so poorly. Not being able to save the game because the 251 isn't big enough is just wrong.

Yeah, I picked up a second 251 card when I got NCAA Football 2004 for my GC last year. It's JUST big enough for a dynasty, a custom team, and a few other small game related files. I use my other 251 for all my other games.

Heh... it amazes me how lucky gamers are when making a purchase. That's a somewhat humorous story, but it makes me wonder: what has this world come to when memory cards become complimentary? A good one, I sure hope. VERY nice, and you remind me I need not only a 251 GC memory card, but another VMU for the Dreamcast. D'oh.

I'm currently running 4 of the 251s for my Gamecube saves, though one of them is dedicated to Winning Eleven 6:FE. Will soon need a fifth though... unless I get one of the huge ones coming out.

That's shit? How do you make a game that you can't save until a new memory card comes out? Bullshit I say..Bullshit!

C'mon guys. Are you really surprised Nintendo is releasing another memory card? The 59 was ridiculously small but we all had to buy that because it was the only one out there. Then the 251 came out a bit later and most of us upgraded to that. Now here's the 1,019. Fuck you Nintendo, I already bought 2 of your lousy memory cards. I'll be damned if I'm gonna buy another. You should have had the 1,019 available at launch but no, you had to milk it.

Kind of reminds me how Nintendo scammed GC owners with the controllers. "Lets put ultra-short cords on all the controllers. That way, we can sell more Wavebirds once it's released".

after reading this thread i feel inadequate about my sole 59 block (not including the one that has AC info on it) and the fact that i have 11 games on it along with 29 open blocks... :embarrassed:

Did you ever think in 2001 Nintendo COULDN'T MAKE a 1059? Or a 251? I mean geeze. Technology isn't ALWAYS available cheaply. The 1019 may have cost like $100 back in 2001. Would YOU want to pay that?

Give Nintendo a break. Technology keeps changing. And it gets cheaper. Something may be available NOW, but that doesn't mean it'll be cheap.

Maybe they could have made one back in 2001. Maybe they couldn't. All I know is Sony didn't start out selling 2mb memory cards and come out with a bigger one each year. 8mb is what they've always been and thats big enough for me.

They did have the technology back in 2001 to make their frickin' controller cords 2 feet longer though. I'm certain of that.
