View Full Version : Best version of NBA Jam:TE

I've always been a big fan of the Genesis games NBA Jam/NBA Jam:TE, but after recently playing the arcade version again. I noticed that the Genesis versions are far from arcade perfect(graphics/sound wise).

So I just wanted to know, what version of NBA Jam:TE is the best port of the Arcade version? Saturn or SNES? Also if there was a PlayStation version how was it?

Thank you very much. :)

I've actually heard that the 32X version is the best next to the Saturn Version... I've been looking to get it (the 32X version)for a while, but I'm having a hard time finding it...

I have also heard that the sega 32x version is the best. Never had the chance to play it. Should load up the rom someday....

I think theres a faq out somewhere that says the creator of the games feels that the 32x version is the best and the mega cd is the worst.
In fact the only thing that makes the 32x version better than the rest is the 32x graphics + load time. PSX/saturn have the graphics but lacks the speedy load time and mega cd has neither. As for the jag version, well i hope one day i get to see a jaguar in real life. That would be something special LOL

Thanks for the help everyone, but my Genesis has died! So I can't get the 32X version. :( And I don't have a Jaguar(never got one, because there are very few games I want for it). So out of the SNES/Saturn/PS1 versions, which one would be the best? I will get a new Genesis in the future, but right now I need a quick NBA Jam fix, I gotta have it man! I just gotta! ;)

Thank you once again for your help.

Indeed, the Jaguar version is great. Tons of hidden characters and goodies too!

The 32X version has some problems, notably the wrong heads on the wrong players. I think it was either Pippen or Armstrong on the Bulls that was really bad. I never got into the Jag version, mostly due to the controllers. The Saturn and PS One versions are identical to me.

The Jaguar version is excellent... although I think it lost some sound clips along the way (I seem to remember that "Is it the shoes?" was taken out), and you can't shatter the backboard... although I'm fairly certain that the arcade version of TE took out the backboard shattering too (At the NBA's request I think). You can also play four player in the Jaguar version if you have the Team Tap.

if your genny died, then pick up a new one, it is by far the cheapest classic console on the market.

I like the Saturn version over the Psone. As Gamerreviewgod said, they are pretty much the same. I just like the Saturn controller more. Saturn version feels like it controls a little better also.

I bet the saturn version is the best, then the 32x version. These are next to the arcade versions though.

I have really only had experience on the genesis version for both so that's all I can really state on. I played hours (and hours and hours and hours) on my genesis and loved those. Need to pick up the version for 32x and saturn sometime!

I've played them all, I think. I'll cast my vote for the 32X version of the game.

Saturn is great too, but 32X = no load times. No load times = me happy.

damnit, i've only got a sealed copy of the 32X version, i don't want to open it ;)

maybe i should get a 2nd copy from ebay, doesn't cost more than 5-10 incl. shipping

I'd rather have a shoulder button for turbo with the Saturn and live with the load times. Of course, if you have a PS2, you pop the PS One version in and turn on fast load times with very little problem.

Besides, you can't complain about load times until you've played NBA Jam Extreme. My god were those terrible.

  The Snes Version (NBA JAM T.E) wasn't bad, and the original NBA JAM on the Snes was cool.. ;)

32X... Blahhh!

Off topic -- How does the new NBA JAM on the PS2 play is it any good?!

I was searching for some other topic but come across this thread.

I'd say the two best versions of NBA Jam TE are the Sega Saturn version and the Atari Jaguar version.

I bought a sealed copy of 32X NBA Jame T.E. about six years ago. Since I'm not much into collecting sealed games, I opened it up after a couple weeks, only to find that the thing didn't even work. It was just a dead cart. Worthless. I should have left it in the shrinkwrap, at least then it would have still had some sort of imaginary value.

I never bought another copy, so I can't say how good the 32X version is, but I thought the Saturn version was pretty perfect. I'm not sure I even noticed the load times, though that doesn't mean they weren't there.

In comes the Sega Saturn, from downtown! It's on fire! BOOM-SHAKALAKA! Razzle Dazzle!

Yeah, I like the Saturn version. :)

Is the sound in the 32X version as good as the SNES version?

I've played all the versions of NBA Jam TE except the PSX version and I'll put in another vote on the 32X version as well. As horrible as the 32X is in general its versions of NBA Jam TE and MK2 are tops.

The 32X version of Mortal Kombat 2 is totally shitty. I mean, Mortal Kombat is totally shitty in general, but even with that taken into consideration, the 32X version is bad. It doesn't look as good as the SNES version even and the AI is barely better than Mortal Combat 56 Peoples on the Famicom or something.

There's a number of good games on the 32X, but Mortal Kombat 2 isn't one of them.

I'm so glad I found this thread.

I am very very very proud to say that my original genesis died while playing a marathon session (5+hours) of NBA Jam TE. The kid next door bet me $20 that he could beat me with a final score of 150 points. Dude, at 14 years old, it's like he slapped my mother by saying that.

We played. I remember the final game. It was 134 to 134. He was better than me but over 5 hours, I got good. We'd only stopped for grabbing mountain dew from the fridge and for no other reasons. It was overtime. Seattle vs Chicago. Kemp vs Pippen. It was a clash of titans.

Four seconds left, I was running Kemp down the court, full turbo, came up for the dunk from the sweet spot he had just milimeters outside of the foul line, when all of a sudden **BIIZZTTZZZTZ**. The screen blanked, and the genesis gave out a small puff of smoke from the AC adapter jack in the back. We'd fried my damn genesis. The acrid smell of burnt plastic and metal filled the living room but goddamn if that wasn't the most awesome way for it to die.

That's a great epic story there. You should have expanded on it and posted in Lore!

It's good to hear all of this great stuff about the 32X version. I just won a lot on ebay (32X and 7 games) and this is one of them. Never owned a 32X myself surprisingly, so this is going to be fun :)

Really think it's enough of a base for a Lore post?

Well I mostly go off memory for 32X titles since I haven't had mine hooked up in years (too messy). I always remember thinking the 32X version of MK2 was the best. I'll take your word for it though! ;)

AI is not a valid argument when it comes to Mortal Kombat though. Not that I've played them all but I can't think of an MK game where the "leg sweep of cpu doom" doesn't work. :P

Jamma. But I have to agree the 32x version was great. SNES was ok.

To be honest, you may want to consider MAME. In my opinion, if you're trying to find a good version of an arcade, it rarely gets better than MAME. Maybe you don't want to do that, I don't know, it's an option though. It's where I've done all of my NBA Jamming over the last 4 years.

32x has the best version

Its just that many people dont know it because they never played it...

BTW the 32x version was programmed, among others, by Steve Snake, the creator of the famous genesis emulator Kega

I guess I'll be the lone dude to cast a vote for the PSX version. I still have it in its longboxed goodness and after the extreme disappointment I felt with all the 16-bit versions this one is by far my fave. Never played the 32x or Saturn versions so maybe I don't know what I'm missing out on.
