I'm have a SNES Game Genie on eBay and today I received this question:

do you have a new snes or an old one? some game genies only work on the older systems, but iI have a new one so it requires a game genie "v2.0". I will probably purchase this item if it does. thanks :P

I've probably seen hundreds of Game Genies over the years and have never seen one of these 'Game Genie v2.0's. I'm aware that the SNES Game Genie doesn't work on the SNES2, but I wasn't aware that they made a second model. Which one of us is mis-informed here?

Yes there were different versions, but I'm not sure how many different versions were made or what ones worked on certain SNES models. Here's what I do know:

1st version - on the code screen, the yellow dash is already there in all the codes. On the later model, the dash doesn't appear until you enter the first 4 letters of the code

1st version - had a codebook limited to only early games around 1991. The later model had a much bigger, red and white codebook.

1st version - if you opened up the Game Genie, the PCB would have a lot of big chips similar to a regular SNES cart. The later version almost looked like a bare PCB, except for a tiny blob of epoxy covering the chip in the center.

You might find a version # on the PCB. I don't remember if there is or not.

Hope this helps.

BTW, Yoshi's Island seems to only work with the 1st version - strange but true
